The Series: St. Norbert holds an 12-2 series lead over Knox. The Green Knights have won the last nine meetings with the Prairie Fire, with Knox's last win coming in a triumph in 1998 in Galesburg. The Coaches: St. Norbert coach Jim Purtill (Miami-Ohio, 1978) is in his tenth season in De Pere. Knox coach Andy Gibbons (Culver-Stockton, 1990) is in his 13th season in Galesburg. Last Meeting: St. Norbert beat Knox last Sept. 29 at Minahan Stadium in De Pere. The Green Knights led at halftime before putting the game away with two third-quarter touchdowns. Cody Craig completed 14 of 20 passes for 253 yards and three touchdowns to pace an offense that rolled up 446 yards. John Rappel also intercepted two passes and returned them both for touchdowns. Knox rushed for 237 yards but was able to pass for only 46 yards. The Green Knights are averaging yards of total offense per game. Senior running back A.J. Phillips paces the rushing attack with 260 yards on 57 carries with seven touchdowns. Sophomore quarterback Rob Berger has 209 yards rushing on 18 carries, while sophomore running back Dante Sims has 201 yards rushing on 47 carries. Berger now leads the team in passing yards with 402, completing 21 of 39 passes with four touchdowns. Senior wide receiver Jeremy Gezella has 17 receptions for 345 yards and five touchdowns. For St. Norbert, 14 different players have caught a pass, 17 different players have a rushing attempt an six different players have attempted a pass through four games this season. Defensively, St. Norbert is allowing yards per game. The Green Knights are yielding 20.8 yards per game on the ground and have allowed just eight rushing first downs in four games. About the Prairie Fire: Knox enters the St. Norbert game on a three-game losing streak after getting shutout by a 38-0 count this past Saturday at Beloit College. The Prairie Fire s lone win this season came in a 26-0 triumph over Eureka College in the season opener. Knox has also lost to Illinois College and Ripon in league play this season. Danny Kizior leads the Prairie Fire in rushing with 210 yards on 38 carries with one touchdown. Bill Meyer is Knox s leading passer, completing 20 of 47 passes for two touchdowns with four interceptions. Derek LaRosa is the leading receiver with nine receptions for 139 yards and one touchdown. Knox s option offense is averaging yards of total offense per game, with of that coming on the ground. The Prairie Fire defense is allowing yards per game with yards of that total coming on the ground. Knox is scoring an average of 16.5 points per game while allowing 31.8 points per game. Defensive Delights: St. Norbert had a banner day on the defensive side of the football this past Saturday in a 62-0 shutout of Lake Forest College. The Green Knights allowed just 12 yards of total offense. It was the second-best defensive effort in school history according to available records dating back to St. Norbert held Illinois College to minus-21 yards of total offense on Sept. 29, 1990, also at Minahan Stadium. The Foresters were put in the hole on rushing yardage, netting a total of minus-28 yards on 35 attempts. That mark was the fourth-best effort in St. Norbert history against the rush. St. Norbert s school-record defense against the run was a minus-77 yard total against UW- Stevens Point on Sept. 21, St. Norbert allowed just four first downs in the game, matching the second-best total in school history. The last time St. Norbert held someone to no more than four first downs was in a Oct. 13, 1990 against Lawrence. The Green Knights held Carroll to three first downs on Sept. 24, 1960 for the school record. 3 St. Norbert has not allowed a score for six consecutive quarters after shutting out Lawrence in the second half on Sept. 20. Through four games, St. Norbert has allowed just 83 net yards rushing, an average of 20.8 yards per game and 0.6 yards per carry. The Green Knights best season against the run came in 2003, when they allowed just 797 yards rushing in 12 games - an average of 66.4 yards per game. With a Purpose: Senior running back A.J. Phillips topped a big milestone against Lake Forest when he went over the 5,000- yard mark for career all-purpose yardage. Phillips has totaled 671 all-purpose yards this year to give him 5,124 career all-purpose yards. Phillips has 1,710 rushing yards, 885 receiving yards, 900 punt return yards and 1,629 kickoff return yards for his career. Phillips is averaging all-purpose yards per game this season. Phillips averaged yards per game as a junior in Phillips 38-yard punt return for a touchdown against Lake Forest was the first kick return for a score of his career. Nifty Fifty: Since head coach Jim Purtill arrived on the St. Norbert campus in 1999, the Green Knights have scored over 50 points in a game 24 times in his 101- game coaching stint. In the 557 football games St. Norbert played prior to Purtill's arrival, the Green Knights scored at least 50 points in a game just 12 times. The Green Knights scored over 50 points against Grinnell (55) and Lake Forest (62) this season. The Green Knights are averaging 45.3 points per game this season. St. Norbert has scored no fewer than 381 points in any of Jim Purtill s nine seasons. Prior to his arrival in 1999, St. Norbert s 289 points in 1989 was the most it had ever scored on one season. St. Norbert has won 49 straight games when scoring at least 30 points dating back to a loss to Illinois College on Nov. 10, St. Norbert is all-time when scoring 30-ormore points and is 96-2 all-time when scoring 40-or-more points. Winning Ways: St. Norbert is looking for its tenth consecutive season with at least eight wins. Since Jim Purtill became head coach in 1999, St. Norbert has won as few as eight games just twice seasons in 2001 and The Green Knights have an all-time record of in 75 years of intercollegiate football, a winning percentage of.588. In Midwest Conference play, St. Norbert has an all-time league best record of , a winning percentage of.834. Under Purtill s tenure, St. Norbert began Midwest Conference play with 25 consecutive league wins, losing the 2001 season finale. Following an 8-1 league season in 2002, St. Norbert reeled off 19 straight league wins before losing to Monmouth on Sept. 17, 2005 in De Pere. Since the loss to Monmouth, St. Norbert has won 28 consecutive league games, with the Green Knights going a solid 47-1 in league play from 2003 to the present. The Green Knights have also won 28 consecutive road games in Midwest Conference action dating back to a loss to Illinois College on Nov. 10, In 23 years in the Midwest Conference, St. Norbert has won 12 football championships. In addition to St. Norbert, only four charter members of the MWC have won at least 10 football championships - Coe with 21, Ripon with 19, Lawrence with 16 and Cornell with 12. Turning the Tide: St. Norbert returned its second interception for a touchdown on the season when Matt Sullivan returned a pick seven yards for a score against Lake Forest on Sept. 27. During Jim Purtill s 10-year tenure as head coach, St. Norbert has scored 51 defensive and special teams touchdowns. Using available game records, research uncovered St. Norbert had scored just 35 defensive touchdowns from 1956 to Under Purtill, St. Norbert is 25-1 when scoring a defensive touchdown and has scored multiple defensive scores in a game seven different times. The 10 defensive and special teams scores in 2006 is the most defensive touchdowns in a season under Purtill, with St. Norbert getting seven in 2005 and six each in 2000 and St. Norbert has won 14 consecutive games when scoring a special teams touchdown dating back to a 2000 NCAA Division III Playoff loss to Central.
