5 Our Story Best Kids Workshop One of the ten awesome birthday party places in Toronto CEO Jennifer Turliuk was selected to participate in the Singularity University Graduate Studies Program at NASA, where she learned from experts about technologies such as 3D printing and robotics and how to apply them to education. Childhood is the most formative stage of life, and Jennifer decided she wanted to provide children with the skills and mindsets to become future innovators, entrepreneurs and inventors. These classes are perhaps the latest example of how the way children play is changing. While kids have long tinkered in the garage with a parent, makerspaces provide kids with the chance to explore science, technology and engineering in a more formalized way. MakerKids is the first and largest makerspace for kids in the world, and has partnered with Intel, 3D Systems & more. 5

9 MEET NEW FRIENDS LEARN TO CODE MAKE A VIDEO GAME Ages Videogames are on our phones, our computers, and our watches; they re everywhere! Playing video games is pretty cool, but have you ever thought about how the games you already love actually work, and how you could build one? We can show you how! You will learn how to design, build, and create your own video game using Scratch. Scratch is a popular introductory programming language made by MIT that uses building blocks of code that fit together to create a program, with no complicated spelling or grammar to worry about. At the end of this program, you will understand how games work, having learned and used core programming concepts to create an awesome game of your own. Sign Up Online! 9

10 MEET NEW FRIENDS LEARN ELECTRONICS SKILLS MAKE AN ELECTRONICS PROJECT Ages This program is great for beginners to electronics and robotics, and younger kids are welcome! Learn skills like wiring, working with motors, LED lights and more while working on a project that you design yourself and get to take home. Sign Up Online! 10

11 MEET NEW FRIENDS LEARN CODING AND ROBOTICS MAKE A ROBOTICS PROJECT Ages Do you like building things and understanding how they work? Are you interested in learning about electronics and computer programming? In Robotics Inventions you will design, plan, program, and build an electronic invention while using an Arduino and learning how to code. An Arduino is a micro-controntroller, a small computer used as the brain of the robot which can be programmed to control the way buttons, motors, switches, sensors, lights, and other electronic parts interact. By the end of this program you will have learned about many of the cool ways computers and coding are everywhere in your life, and how to plan and build your own amazing devices. Sign Up Online! 11

12 MEET NEW FRIENDS LEARN 3D DESIGN MAKE A 3D PRINTED OBJECT Ages Have you ever thought about what it takes to design something on the computer and watch it be printed in plastic before your eyes in 3D? In this class you will learn how 3D printing works, and how to design creations of your own on the computer. Learn about 3D design by tackling design, building and engineering challenges. This will help us to understand how engineers come up with strategies and solve problems. In this class we will use Tinkercad, an amazing introductory 3D design program that is web-based and free, so that you can keep working on your 3D design skills later. 13 MEET NEW MINECRAFT FRIENDS LEARN NEW COMPUTER SKILLS MAKE MINECRAFT YOUR OWN Ages Do you love Minecraft? You may already have some amazing Minecraft skills, but in this program, you will do so much more with Minecraft than you realized you could. Minecraft is an amazing way to learn new skills and make new friends. Work with people in the real world collaboratively playing and building in the game and have an opportunity to learn new skills every week such as mod installation, coding, powerful server plug-ins, how to run a server, and more! By the end of this program you will have learned how to make Minecraft even more awesome, having learned how computers and servers work and about core computer programming concepts, while collaborating with people equally excited about Minecraft. 14 MEET NEW MINECRAFT FRIENDS LEARN ABOUT ROBOTICS MAKE A REMOTE CONTROL ROBOT Ages Learn skills like wiring, working with motors, LED lights, circuits, and more while working on a project that you design yourself! 16 School Year (weekly) Programs HOURS PER WEEK FOR 10 WEEKS AFTERNOON, WEEKNIGHT OR WEEKEND $ HST We run 10-week programs that range from hours a week, after school or on weekends. Experience a personal transformation in what you think you are capable of. Our terms are January to April, April to June, July to August, and September to December. My boys flourish here and look forward to it every week. They show social skills improvement and more confidence since coming to MakerKids and finding their tribe. 17 Camps and PA Days FULL DAY 9AM-3:30PM; BEFORE CARE 8-9AM, AFTER CARE 3:30-6PM $99/day, $ /week + HST We run summer camps, PA Days, Winter Camp, and March Break Camp. Build leadership skills, meet other kids who are makers, make your own project, and more. We go to a nearby park at lunch. Space in our programs is limited, so register ASAP to avoid disappointment. A most excellent program and apparently unique in the world so far. My nine year old son had a blast, is recommending it to all his friends and would have set up camp there permanently if I let him! The kids loved that they could take their toy creations home and I liked that I didn t have to give out regular junky loop bags. 22 School Testimonial Inspired by one of our MakerKids clubs, a student in grade 5 and his Dad are building an Arduino controller to remotely turn on the cottage water heater in advance of their arrival. This and other amazing projects have been spreading through Kingsway College School thanks to MakerKids. It s never been more exciting to be in education; the learning and creativity through technology, coding, electronics and open-ended making are like rocket fuel for the school experience. But schools need help making this available for all their students, and that s where MakerKids stepped in at KCS.
