Oxford has a 900 year history of educating some of the brightest minds and outstanding individuals from across the world, and has links with more than 50 Nobel Prize winners. Oxford is ranked first in the UK and joint second in the world*, and is renowned for its research strengths across the arts and sciences. German students make up the third largest group of graduate students at Oxford, after the UK and USA. Currently more than 580 German graduate students are studying in Oxford s historic libraries, conducting research in our state-of-the-art laboratories and enjoying membership of our world-famous colleges. *Times Higher Education Supplement s World University Rankings Oxford London Oxford has a long history of providing an intellectual home for celebrated German academics. One such luminary is Ernst Chain, the expert in chemical pathology, who shared the Nobel Prize with Howard Florey and Alexander Fleming for his work on penicillin. Today, over 250 academic posts in Oxford are held by German citizens. From law and linguistics to chemistry and classics, our German academics are renowned for pushing the boundaries of their fields and developing the abilities of their graduate students.

3 Scholarships Stipendien New graduate students at Oxford in will benefit from over 850 scholarships, worth over 70 million, from the University, its colleges and other supporters. Oxford has a wide range of scholarships available for graduate students from Germany who demonstrate academic excellence. Funding comes from a variety of sources including University-wide schemes such as the Clarendon Fund, departmental scholarships, college scholarships, and other external funds kindly donated by charities, philanthropists and other organisations. Clarendon Fund The Clarendon Fund offers over 120 full scholarships every year to academically excellent graduate students at the University of Oxford. Clarendon scholarships cover full fees as well as a generous grant for living expenses funded with the help of Oxford University Press, Oxford s colleges and other external partners. UK Research Council funding German nationals pay the same fees as UK students and are eligible for fees-only UK Research Council awards as graduate students. In some instances, the University is able to supplement such awards with funds to cover living costs as well. 4 Oxford s departments and colleges Fakultäten und Colleges Oxford s graduate courses are short and high-quality, facilitating students swift career progression. Oxford offers around 200 Master s-level courses (usually 1 year; some courses take 2 years) and 120 doctoral programmes (3 4 years). Students on Master s-level courses attend lectures and seminars, and are typically assessed by exams and coursework. Students on doctoral courses complete a major research project and thesis, meeting regularly with a supervisor. Many doctoral courses require a Master s degree in a relevant subject. As an Oxford graduate student, you will belong to a department which will provide your teaching and supervision. You will also be a member of one of the University s world-famous colleges. Being a member of a college is one of the most unique aspects of studying at Oxford and offers you access to a personal community of fellow students where you can relax and socialise with people from all over the world. You can also enjoy stimulating discussions with students and academic staff from a variety of subjects. All colleges offer meals and many provide some accommodation too. Life in Oxford Leben in Oxford Living in Oxford is a truly special student experience where centuries of tradition sit alongside a bustling and modern cosmopolitan city. There is a vibrant community of friendly and dynamic people from all parts of the world and a multitude of events take place on a daily basis, including art exhibitions, athletic competitions, film screenings, concerts, as well as student-organised social and cultural events. Oxford University German Society Tracing its roots back to the Hanover Club founded in the first decade of the 20th century, the Oxford University German Society is one of the oldest student-run societies in Oxford and a cultural, political and social centre for promoting Germanophone culture. With over 200 members, the society s film nights, guest speakers, debates, concerts and conversation evenings are always popular.

5 Application deadlines Bewerbungsfristen Applications for graduate study at Oxford for entry in October 2014 are now open and you can apply online. The University has a number of application deadlines throughout the year and these may vary so check our Course Guide to see which deadlines apply for the course you are interested in. Every course has a main application deadline in January, these are: Friday 10 January 2014 Medical Sciences, Computer Science, Philosophy, and Politics and International Relations Friday 24 January 2014 All other subjects You will need to submit a completed application by the relevant January deadline if you would like to be considered for one of our scholarship schemes. A completed application will include your CV, your official transcript(s), three academic references and a statement of purpose or research proposal. Some courses also require samples of written work or admissions tests so check carefully. Everything you need to know about applying can be found in the Course Guide English language requirements Sprachkenntnisse In addition to meeting the academic selection criteria for your course, you will need to demonstrate your ability to study in English. Evidence needs to be in the form of a certificate of an English language test taken within two years of the date your course starts. Please check the Course Guide to determine whether your course requires Standard or Higher scores. You can apply before you have taken your test although you should send on your results as soon as these are available. Essential requirements for graduate study A first or strong upper-second class undergraduate degree, usually between GPA (US). This is usually equivalent to a high achievement in a German first degree ( sehr gut or gut ) and a number of requirements specific to your course, listed under Selection Criteria in the Course Guide. 6 Alumni Absolventen The University of Oxford has a long history of providing students with the skills, experience, and confidence to follow their passions. Germany has the 5th largest concentration of Oxford alumni in the world, with over 2,700 alumni and five regional alumni branches in Germany, in Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, Frankfurt, and the Rhineland. Oxford s distinguished German alumni include: Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, Oscar-winning director and screenwriter Hans-Paul Bürkner, Chairman of the Boston Consulting Group Norbert Lammert, Bundestag president and Rhodes Scholar Elisabeth Blochmann, Eminent scholar of education, as well as of philosophy, and a pioneer in and researcher of women s education in Germany Richard von Weizsäcker, president of the Federal Republic of Germany , first president of the reunified Germany Ernst Schumacher, internationally influential economic thinker Henrik Hannemann completed an MSc in Biodiversity, Conservation and Management and was a member of Keble College. The course provided excellent teaching and a very stimulating research environment. Oxford as a learning environment has provided me with a lot of additional insight. The collegiate system provides a welcoming social background as well as a second layer of academic opportunities.
