Oxford s links with Brazil are swiftly expanding, with an ever growing number of Brazilian students and staff across a wide range of disciplines. Currently, over 9,800 graduate students from diverse backgrounds and more than 145 countries are studying in Oxford s historic libraries, researching in our first class laboratories, and enjoying membership of our close-knit colleges. The University s vibrant Brazilian Studies Programme promotes a greater understanding of Brazil s history, society, language, culture, politics, economy, ecology, international relations and environmental studies. Collaborations between Oxford and Brazil include the Structural Genomics Consortium, the Blavatnik School of Government, Environmental Sciences, Plant Sciences and Technology Transfer.

3 Scholarships Bolsas de estudo New graduate students at Oxford in will benefit from over 850 scholarships, worth over 70 million, from the University, its colleges and other supporters. Oxford has a wide range of scholarships available for graduate students from Brazil who demonstrate academic excellence. Funding comes from a variety of sources including University-wide schemes such as the Clarendon Fund, departmental scholarships, college scholarships, and other external funds kindly donated by charities, philanthropists and other organisations. Science without Borders (Ciência sem Fronteiras) The University of Oxford is delighted to participate in Science without Borders and is glad to host growing numbers of Brazilian doctoral students in the Medical Sciences and Mathematical, Physical and Life Sciences through this scheme. For the latest information on how to apply for these scholarships, please see Clarendon Fund The Clarendon Fund offers over 120 full scholarships every year to academically excellent graduate students at the University of Oxford. Clarendon scholarships cover full fees as well as a generous grant for living expenses funded with the help of Oxford University Press, Oxford s colleges and other external partners. 4 Oxford s departments and colleges Departamentos e colleges de Oxford Oxford s graduate courses are short and high-quality, facilitating students swift career progression. Oxford offers around 200 Master s-level courses (usually 1 year; some courses take 2 years) and 120 doctoral programmes (3 4 years). Students on Master s-level courses attend lectures and seminars, and are typically assessed by exams and coursework. Students on doctoral courses complete a major research project and thesis, meeting regularly with a supervisor. Many doctoral courses require a Master s degree in a relevant subject. As an Oxford graduate student, you will belong to a department which will provide your teaching and supervision. You will also be a member of one of the University s world-famous colleges. Being a member of a college is one of the most unique aspects of studying at Oxford and offers you access to a personal community of fellow students where you can relax and socialise with people from all over the world. You can also enjoy stimulating discussions with students and academic staff from a variety of subjects. All colleges offer meals and many provide some accommodation too. 5 Application deadlines Prazos para candidaturas Applications for graduate study at Oxford for entry in October 2014 are now open and you can apply online. The University has a number of application deadlines throughout the year and these may vary so check our Course Guide to see which deadlines apply for the course you are interested in. Every course has a main application deadline in January, these are: Friday 10 January 2014 Medical Sciences, Computer Science, Philosophy, and Politics and International Relations Friday 24 January 2014 All other subjects You will need to submit a completed application by the relevant January deadline if you would like to be considered for one of our scholarship schemes. A completed application will include your CV, your official transcript(s), three academic references and a statement of purpose or research proposal. Some courses also require samples of written work or admissions tests so check carefully. Evidence needs to be in the form of a certificate of an English language test taken within two years of the date your course starts. Please check the Course Guide to determine whether your course requires Standard or Higher scores. You can apply before you have taken your test although you should send on your results as soon as these are available. This is between 8.0 and 10 or a mark of AB or muito bom when awarded after 4 or more years of study (Brazil) and a number of requirements specific to your course, listed under Selection Criteria in the Course Guide. The international community and the cultural life in Oxford are amazing. My decision to choose my subject of study was solely based on a passion for my subject, and I am lucky to have been funded to pursue it.

6 Alumni Ex-alunos The University of Oxford has a long history of providing students with the skills, experience, and confidence to follow their passions. There are over 700 Oxford alumni in South and Central America (excluding Mexico), 246 of whom live in Brazil. There is a Brazilian alumni branch in Rio de Janeiro, OUS Brazil, which aims to provide support to alumni in Brazil, and to put alumni in touch with one another. Their main event is a dinner that is organised every two years in conjunction with Cambridge alumni, with speakers from both universities including Ambassadors and Ministers. Alumni in Brazil can all access a full range of benefits and services from exclusive events to careers guidance and access to continuing education opportunities. Oxford s distinguished Brazilian alumni include: Vinícius de Moraes ( ), diplomat, poet and songwriter. Lourdes Sola, retired Professor of the Department of Political Science, University of São Paulo, and past President of the International Political Science Association. Matias Spektor, Professor at Fundação Getúlio Vargas, Rio de Janeiro (FGV-Rio) and newspaper columnist. Andre Hallack, DPhil in Healthcare Innovation (St Cross College) previously studied at the Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC). Oxford is a cosy town, but there are lots of things to do! The facilities are amazing and the staff are highly qualified. My Brazilian contemporaries agree that there are some cultural differences, however the staff are very friendly and open to talking with their students. The contact time here is very good.
