3 Welcome to the School of Chemistry 03 The School is ranked in the top 10 in the UK for the quality of its research. This means that every day you will be guided through the world of chemistry by scientists who have an international reputation for their subject knowledge. The School warmly welcomes postgraduate students to our range of Masters courses. We take pride in the calibre of our staff, in the quality of our teaching and in the successes of our students as they develop their career potential, within a stimulating and supportive academic environment. The School is comprised of four research sections, Colour Science, Inorganic & Materials Chemistry, Organic Chemistry and Physical Chemistry, each with an enviable reputation for research. We have 55 academic and academic-related staff, in excess of 140 postgraduate students and 50 postdoctoral fellows. We are located in our own building, adjacent to the iconic Parkinson Building, with our own laboratories, teaching space, tutorial rooms and study areas. All students are encouraged to take part in the life of the School and to contribute to the range of academic and social activities available. Our students come from a wide range of nationalities and backgrounds which ensures a lively and exhilarating international environment in which to study. Chemistry is one of the broadest and most intriguing of all the sciences. Leeds researchers are involved in the development of new medicines to help combat diseases such as cancer and multidrug resistant bacteria. We are developing new catalysts to make reactions work more efficiently and new materials that appear in devices all around the home. It is chemists who really understand how the atmosphere works and give us the knowledge which helps us predict changes to the climate. From the nanometer scale of quantum mechanics to the light years of evolution and interstellar reactions, chemistry has shaped and continues to shape our lives. We look forward to welcoming you in person. SCHOOL OF CHEMISTRY

6 06 School of Chemistry // MASTERS PROGRAMMES Masters Programmes MSc Chemical Biology and Drug Design Entry requirements: A first or an upper second class honours degree or equivalent in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or a related subject. Accredited by the Royal Society of Chemistry The pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries are increasingly requiring researchers with a strong background at the interface between chemistry and biology. This course is designed to bridge the gap between an undergraduate degree in a core subject, and genuine interdisciplinary research. It will provide you with rigorous training in an exciting area of interdisciplinary science. This taught Masters Course focuses on using chemical methodology to tackle complex biological and medical problems. The approach is highly interdisciplinary and may involve the interaction of, for example, synthetic chemists with protein scientists. You will be taught by experts from across the Astbury Centre, an interdisciplinary research group within the University, in chemical biology, biophysics and medicinal chemistry using a problem-based approach. In addition, visiting lecturers from the pharmaceutical industry provide expertise in industrially-relevant applications of chemical biology and drug design. The course takes full advantage of the world-class facilities available at Leeds through an extended interdisciplinary research project supervised by two members of staff with complementary expertise. The Chemical Biology and Drug Design course draws on a set of five core modules: Together these modules will give you a thorough grounding in contemporary chemical biology and drug design as well as introducing topics from the research frontier. In addition you will choose from a wide range of optional modules covering a wide variety of topics from computational biology to asymmetric synthesis. The focal point of the course is the interdisciplinary research project which will contribute 50% of the mark for your degree. With the core modules behind you, you will be ideally positioned to choose an exciting problem to investigate. The project will provide you with key research experience to take your career forward. You will spend over four months in your supervisors' research laboratories working alongside PhD students and experienced postdoctoral researchers. This MSc course has been strongly supported by the research councils and the pharmaceutical industry and is accredited by the Royal Society of Chemistry; graduates from the programme with an appropriate first degree in chemistry satisfy the academic requirements for the award of Chartered Chemist (CChem) status. Career opportunities On graduation, you will be ideally placed to undertake interdisciplinary research in academia and the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry. You will also be in a strong position to pursue a science-related career, such as patent work, scientific publishing or scientific administration. In addition, this course places Masters students in a strong position to forge a career at companies that work at the interface between chemistry and biology. The pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries are increasingly requiring researchers with a strong interdisciplinary background. Many of our graduates have secured positions on Chemical Biology and Medicinal Chemistry PhD programmes in the UK and internationally. The MSc provides tailored training at the interface between chemistry and the biological sciences, and will enhance your prospects of securing a place on one of these highly competitive postgraduate programmes. There are also opportunities to continue on to PhD study with many projects supported by industrial partners. MSc Polymers, Colorants and Fine Chemicals SCHOOL OF CHEMISTRY

8 08 School of Chemistry // MASTERS PROGRAMMES MSc Chemical Process Research and Development Entry requirements: Students should hold or expect to obtain at least an upper second class BSc (or equivalent) degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or suitable alternative science or engineering degree. Accredited by the Royal Society of Chemistry The course is centred in the Institute of Process Research and Development (iprd), a key interdisciplinary institute, which links the School of Chemistry and School of Process, Environmental and Materials Engineering (SPEME) at the University of Leeds. This course is industrially relevant, and much of it is industrially led, including extensive use of seminars and workshops by industrial speakers. The excellent facilities and the range of expertise at Leeds mean that you will be able to contribute to research at the cutting edge of process technology, in industrially relevant areas, and in some cases with significant industrial involvement. To begin, you will study core material, starting with an initial introduction to Process Chemistry and Chemical Technology which will cover key techniques and methodology and will be reinforced through deductive problem solving and student led activities. You will then take your studies down one of three routes, depending on your background, which cover chemistry and chemical engineering at a range of levels. The modular nature of the course allows students from differing backgrounds to tailor the course to their own needs and interests. All students then study advanced core modules, which lead on to an extensive research project, normally jointly supervised by a chemist and a chemical engineer. Many research projects are industrially sponsored and some can be carried out in industrial laboratories when advantageous to do so. Teaching is by lectures, practical classes, tutorials, seminars and supervised research projects. Extensive use is made of IT and a wide range of materials is available to enable students to study at their own pace and in their own time to enhance and extend the material taught formally. Assessment is based on course work, research project performance and written exams which take place at the end of the semester in which the module is taught.
