4 Some things to think about over the summer Commitment Take every opportunity to learn & improve you are surrounded by people with experience and expertise keep an open mind and learn. If you re unsure just ask. You are expected to ride for the school whenever possible - if your horse is not AMAZING at a particular discipline, then strive to improve, don t just opt out. School competitions are not easy to win so front up with your competition face on. Communication Please read and reply to s promptly. Have lessons and take care of your horse you and he won t improve otherwise get the basics right and the rest will be easy. You can NEVER be too good to work on the basics every successful rider will tell you this! If your horse is on-site: You are expected to ride every Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday plus one or two other days per week as a minimum. On the days you don t ride, your horse would enjoy being taken for a walk outside his paddock or lunged. Catch your horse at lunchtime and feed him on the days you ride this saves you having to wait round afterwards. Arrive at the Equestrian Centre at 3.30pm Monday Thursday, to either ride, feed, move your horse s fence or attend meetings. Duties are for the whole week Monday to Sunday students who do them well will get a reward. Those who don t will get to repeat them the following week. Clean up after yourselves during the weekends (esp. removing manure from the arena, parking area, yards, & wash bay) Make sure we know when your horse is arriving and leaving, preferably a few days in advance, and if you are going to be absent for any reason phone or Kay or Debbie Horse Management Grooming is a great way to improve your horse s musculature & your fitness working the horse correctly will improve condition, appearance and fitness. If you are carrying out an effective training and feeding programme your horse should look (and go) better. Attend to your horse every day feed at lunchtime, especially during winter when the weather is colder and the light fades more quickly. Clip your horse early in autumn it will help him dry off more quickly and he will sweat less & keep his condition, as long as you rug him up warmly. Putting a rug on a soaking wet horse and putting him in the paddock is not acceptable practice.
