Widely recogized as oe of the atio s most effective public health itervetios, WIC isures that low-icome wome have healthy pregacies ad that youg childre grow up properly ourished. Sice 1974, this successful federal program, the Special Supplemetal Nutritio Program for Wome, Ifats ad Childre (WIC), has provided utritio educatio, breastfeedig promotio, health ad social services referrals, ad specific utritious foods to low-icome, at-risk youg families. With the primary focus o prevetio, for each dollar WIC speds, over three dollars is saved i dowstream health care costs. The Califoria WIC program, admiistered by the WIC Divisio i the Califoria Departmet of Public Health (CDPH), is by far the largest i the coutry, ad has a log history of excellet program operatios ad iovative maagemet ad health educatio. Califoria WIC Associatio (CWA), a 501 c(3) o-profit orgaizatio, is dedicated to improvig ad supportig WIC ad workig to improve commuity health. What is the WIC Worksite Welless Program? WIC Worksite Welless is a statewide welless iitiative created for Califoria s 3,500 dedicated frotlie employees. Started as a walkig program with pedometers, the program has grow to a certificatio program icludig compay welless policies ad addressig comprehesive health issues such as utritio, physical activity, ad metal health. Aligig the Califoria WIC workig eviromet with the utritio ad health messages that WIC staff share with over a millio WIC families every year, this comprehesive welless program focuses o workplace policies that build a culture to promote ad support lifelog healthy habits. The program supports local agecies as they prepare for ad achieve official Well WIC Worksite certificatio, ad the cotiue to support Certified Worksites i sustaiig staff ethusiasm ad egagemet i healthy work behaviors over a three year period, at which time they will have the optio to update ad reew their Certificatio. WIC agecies, housed i local o-profit orgaizatios or couty health departmets are ow beig asked to assist their paret orgaizatios to adopt the comprehesive healthy policies for other departmets. With the curret shift to prevetio ad cost savigs, ad may more employee welless programs beig istituted, WIC Worksite Welless, is ready for expasio. Additioally, WIC employees costitute the largest public health workforce iterfacig with Califoria s youg families. Key compoets of the CWA WIC Worksite Welless Program are: Commitmet: At our April 2009 lauch, the majority of Califoria s local WIC agecies ethusiastically siged up to become developig agecies ready to work towards Well WIC Worksite Certificatio over the ext twelve moths. Each agecy was provided with a starter kit cotaiig a Te Steps to Worksite Welless plaig guide, alog with backgroud materials o liability, cost-effectiveess ad evaluatio issues. Developmet: Agecies developig their worksite welless programs choose from a meu of optios desiged to trasform their WIC sites ito ceters of welless i their local commuities. CWA provides traiig ad icetives to assist them as they pla ad implemet chages desiged to make healthy eatig ad active livig a itegral part of the WIC work day. Site welless coordiators participate i traiigs via the web ad at regular cofereces put o by CWA, ad etwork with other WIC colleagues to share ideas ad get support. Certificatio: Whe a local WIC agecy is ready to certify as a official Well WIC Worksite, a team of peers ad expert reviewers coducts a o-site visit. Usig a checklist tool, team members iterview the Welless coordiator ad other staff ad review the plaig documets. Agecies who meet completio criteria for all of the Te Steps are awarded a official Well WIC Worksite Certificatio, which will iclude osite recogitio with attractive sigage, iclusio i commuity celebratio via the CWA ewsletter ad the Well WIC Webpage ad recogitio i a pleary award ceremoy at the Aual Sprig Coferece. 5 What are the steps for a WIC Agecy to become certified? Agecies complete ad sig the Commitmet Form ad will have 18 moths to pla, complete ad become a Well WIC Certified Agecy. Agecies desigate a Welless Coordiator ad form a Welless Committee Agecies coduct a Staff Welless Survey to assess welless habits before staff begi the program. Agecies complete the Te Step/Goal Work Pla which icludes choosig at least two objectives for each step i their work pla. The objectives listed i the work pla are a guide to fulfillig each step. The te steps to complete are: 1. Better Nutritio/Healthy Foods 2. Physical Activity 3. Geeral Health 4. Emotioal ad Metal Health Support 5. Lactatio Accommodatio for WIC Staff 6.
