2 Introduction: Continuing with the tradition of the established IITs, IIT Indore aims to play an active role in the task of propelling India on its growth-trajectory by focusing on education and research in the fields of nanoscale science and engineering. From working on energy requirements of the future to advanced nano-level device engineering, research at IIT Indore is enhanced through extensive collaborative work with leading research and academic organizations. Nanoscience and nanoengineering refer broadly to a field of applied science and technology whose coalescing theme is the control of matter on the atomic and molecular scale, generally 100 nanometers or smaller, and the fabrication of devices with critical dimensions that lie within that range. Organizing Committee: Ø Dr. Shaibal Mukherjee, Discipline of Electrical Engineering (CEP Coordinator) Ø Dr. Abhinav Kranti, Discipline of Electrical Engineering Ø Dr. Apurba K. Das, Discipline of Chemistry Ø Dr. Tushar K. Mukherjee, Discipline of Chemistry 2
3 Course Objectives: Practical implementations of nanoscale science and engineering have great importance as it critically depends on manpower training. Thus, modern education needs to address the rapidly evolving aspects of nanoscience and nanoengineering by training a new generation of scientists, researchers, technologists and engineers in this emerging discipline. The aim of this course is to apprise academicians, researchers, and scientists in various institutions, research laboratories, industries on the basic and applied technological advancements in the field. Initiate an interest within the participants for including fundamental and applied aspects of nanosciences and nanoengineering in the teaching and research modules in their respective organizations. This three-day course will be highly interdisciplinary in nature and is specially tailored to provide the participants necessary inputs in diverse areas of nanoscale science and engineering, starting from basic fundamentals to applications. Profile of the Speakers: S.N. Speakers 1 Dr. Shaibal Mukherjee URL: 2 Dr. Abhinav Kranti URL: Dr. Apurba K. Das URL: Dr. Tushar K. Mukherjee URL: Expertise Nano-scale Multiple Quantum Well Lasers, hybrid LEDs, Solar Cells, Nanophotonics, Nano-scale sensors Solid-State Devices, Circuit Design, Ultra Low Power Nanoelectronics and Nanotechnology Peptide and DNA based nanostructured materials, Systems chemistry, Biosensors, Supramolecular electronics Single molecule fluorescence imaging using TIRFM, Single molecule spectroscopy in heterogeneous media, Developing high resolution optical microscope, Ultrafast fluorescence spectroscopy 3
4 Course Contents: S.N. Speaker Topic 1. Dr. Shaibal Mukherjee What, Why, and How Nano? Abstract: Fundamentals of nano-scale science and technology covering various aspects of nanotechnology in past, present, and future. 2. Dr. Abhinav Kranti Junctionless Nanowire MOSFETs Abstract: MOSFET scaling into the nanometer regime is being hindered due to the requirement of forming idealized steep junctions that impose severe limitations on thermal budget and necessitate the development of costly millisecond annealing techniques. In this context, it is imperative to examine the feasibility of MOS transistors without junctions. The talk would analyze the advantages and challenges of nanoscale Junctionless MOSFETs and establish an early understanding of their potential impact on device and circuit design of next generation MOS devices. 3. Dr. Apurba K. Das Nanomedicine and Biosensor Abstract: Nanomedicine envisages the medical applications of nanotechnology, which may be used to monitor, repair and control of human biological systems at the molecular level using engineered nanodevices and nanostructures. Current problem for nanomedicine is involved with the issues related to toxicity and environmental impact of nanoscale materials. However, precisely controlled or programmable nanomachines and nanorobots are developed with a full promise of nanomedicine. 4. Dr. Tushar K. Mukherjee Theory to Application of Semiconductor Quantum Dots: From Spectroscopy to Microscopy Abstract: It is very important to understand the inherent fundamental properties of nanomaterials before applying them in various applications starting from technology to nanotherapeutic. Here, we will provide a broad overview of semiconductor quantum dots, their properties and how they can be used in bio-imaging. 5. Dr. Shaibal Mukherjee Application of Nanotechnology in Solid-State Lighting and Photovoltaics Abstract: Application of nano-scale science and engineering to realize highperformance, low-cost solid-state lighting, especially white LED and solar photovoltaics. 6. Dr. Abhinav Kranti Perspectives of Ultra Low Power Analog/RF MOSFETs Abstract: In the nanoscale regime, upcoming CMOS technologies face many technological challenges, the most crucial being the short chnnel effects (SCEs) that tend to degrade the analog/rf figures of merit (FOM). To overcome the degradation in analog/rf FOM, certain techniques such as HALO implants, laterally asymmetric channel (LAC) or graded-channel (GC) design, gatesource/drain underlap designs have been proposed. The talk will provide an overview of various technological options available along with their advantages and limitations for enhancing ultra low power analog/rf metrics advanced scalable CMOS devices. 7. Dr. Apurba K. Das Bioinspired Nanoscience Abstract: Biologically inspired bionanoscience achieved through structural and mechanistic analyses of biological processes at nanoscale. Material properties and applications studied in bionanoscience include nanoscience of disease, optical, thermal and mechanical properties of nanoscale biomolecules. 8. Dr. Tushar K. Mukherjee Advanced Microscopic Techniques for Molecular Sensing at Single molecule Level Abstract: Here we will cover basic configuration of advanced microscope, their optical components, various alignment of the light sources for optical detection as well as two sophisticated techniques namely Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering and Total Internal Reflection Fluorescence Microscopy. 4
