2 MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Fall/Winter, 2004, Page 2 Awards Committee. We plan to keep these committees on a volunteer basis, instead of the chairs being elected. The proposed Bylaws are on the website and I hope that you will review them prior to the Fall Meeting and Program on Nov. 11. I am honored to be the President of Delta Chapter for the next two years. This year promises to be exciting as we change the governance structure. We have several new initiatives planned also. A survey was included with the ballot last year. I want to thank everyone who took the time to complete the survey. The top topics of interest for program topics were: legal/ethical issues, professional issues, evidence based practice, clinical practice topics, and interdisciplinary research. You can expect to see programs on these topics in the future. The changes in the governance structure require only two committees: Governance and Leadership Succession. The Governance Committee will consist of the Counselors and three elected members. Since Delta Chapter has two Counselors, we would need to elect at least two more members. The mission of this committee is to oversee bylaws compliance, make recommendations for bylaws changes, and oversee member and chapter eligibility issues. We have had the help of three very involved members from the class of 2003: Angie Cofer, Amanda Gantner and Amanda VonSchriltz. They have been attending the board meetings and were involved in the member orientation held on July 20 and the Alzheimer s Association Memory Walk on Oct. 2. They are very energetic and enthusiastic about member involvement. We are looking for other projects for Delta Chapter members to participate in and welcome your suggestions. I am very excited about the changes that are occurring and reassured by the involvement of some of our newer members. This year has started very well. Sincerely, Sharon Kumm The Leadership Succession Committee will consist of 3 elected members. The mission of this committee is to develop members in organizational leadership roles across the span of their careers, mentor members to assume organizational board and officer positions at all levels of the organization. In addition, the Executive Board has decided to keep a Finance Committee and the Research and

10 Fall/Winter, 2004, Page 10 NAME: Karen Wambach OCCUPATION: Assistant Professor KU SON INVOLVEMENT IN SST: member of STTI since 1988, member of Delta Chapter since 1993, served as Vice-president for one term and treasurer for 5 years, currently Finance Committee Chair HOW HAS STT IMPACTED YOUR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT? STT and its values has fostered my sense of dedication to nursing scholarship. Through leadership activities in STT I have grown professionally. Through financial assistance from Delta chapter my research has been advanced. I am very appreciative for all the support I have received from STT. WHAT CAREER AND/OR PRACTICE ACCOMPLISHMENTS HAVE BEEN MOST MEANINGFUL FOR YOU? My program of research [breastfeeding promotion and support] have been very important to my career and my own sense of impacting the health of our society. Currently I am conducting a large clinical trial to promote and support breastfeeding among teenage mothers. This population has many challenges to face in their own social and personal development, as well as caring for their newborns. I believe all we can do to support their efforts in providing breast milk for their infants will enhance the health of these young mothers and their infants' health. HOW CAN YOU MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THE PRACTICE OF NURSING? My teaching activities at the undergraduate and graduate level will add to the collective educational preparation of our future nurses, advanced practice nurses, and nurse scientists by facilitating learning in the areas of my instruction. My teaching and guidance is just one piece of a collective effort by all of our dedicated nurse educators here at KUSON. My research efforts in promoting breastfeeding initiation and duration will hopefully touch the lives and health of teenage mothers and their infants as they begin their life as a family. CURRENT ENDEAVORS? I currently teach at the undergraduate (maternity), masters (theory and nurse educator course), and doctoral level (measurement) in the KUSON. I also advise BSN, masters, and doctoral students in research projects. My current research study titled "Promoting and Supporting Breastfeeding in Adolescents" is in its second year of four years and is funded by the National Institute of Nursing Research.
