7 Academic Welcome Welcome to Coventry University London Campus. Academic Induction is to provide you with general information about CULC programmes and with an understanding of key factors that are critical for your success at CULC. 6

8 A real business experience CULC aims to prepare you for a successful business career and to provide you with a real business experience. That real business experience starts at your arrival on campus, continues through your academic programme and extends into business and industry through workbased learning, internships and consulting projects. With its technology enabled, 21st Century campus CULC focusses on building careers. 21st century learning We use the latest thinking in learning and assessment techniques to ensure that students can apply what they have learnt to real business issues. Assessments are focussed on team-work, presentations, preparation of executive briefs, business simulations, wiki groups and use of social media such as blogs. A truly global experience As tomorrow s managers and leaders, you need to be able to operate effectively across national and cultural boundaries. CULC programmes are informed by an international perspective, through: An international student body an international faculty international field visits international partnerships globally relevant curricula 7

9 Technology enabled learning Your learning at CULC is underpinned and supported by the latest developments in technology, from the use of Moodle to support all modules and programmes, to the Learning Resource Centre, with its 29,000 e-journals and 51,000 e-books available online 24/7, the use of e-discussion platforms and of a simulated trading floor which allows you to benefit from interactive teaching of complex financial investments. Undergraduate programmes structure and delivery If you are on an undergraduate programme you will be studying two modules per term over three 10 week terms. Each undergraduate module is a 20 credit module, equivalent to 200 independent study hours. You will have 6 hours of class contact time per module per week, usually two 1 hour lectures and two 2 hour seminars/group activities. Postgraduate programmes structure and delivery If you are on a postgraduate programme you will be studying up to four modules per term over four 10 week terms. With the exception of Term 4 electives and two noncredit bearing skills based modules studied in Term 1 and Term 2 respectively, all other postgraduate modules are 15 credit modules, each equivalent to 150 hours of independent study time. You will have 4 hours of class contact time per module per week, usually one 1 hour lecture followed by one 1 hour seminar and one 2 hour group-activity. 8

10 Assessment methods CULC uses a variety of assessment methods designed to be business related and technology enabled. Assessments can be either individual or group based. Assessment types may include: Executive briefings Management reports Case study analysis Formal presentations Blogging Programme specific inductions To familiarise yourself with your programme of study, we recommend that you attend your programme specific induction. This will offer you an opportunity to meet your programme coordinator, academic tutors and other students enrolled on the programme. 9

( coventry.ac.uk/apps/ Student/0/Login.htm) Student accommodation Coventry University London Campus has an agreement with CRM London Students for the provision of student accommodation. CRM London Students offers various student accommodation options to suit your requirements and budget including purpose-built student halls of residences, flat or house shares, and private accommodation in London. There are two halls of residence within walking distance of the campus. Places are likely to be limited for intakes other than October. 14 NUS Extra The NUS Extra card offers a range of exclusive discounts, offers and competitions designed to make student life more exciting, more memorable and more rewarding. Use it to make your money go further on books, clothes, sports stuff, CDs, travel, computer gear, gigs, eating out etc. For more information on the discounts and offers available please visit the NUS Extra website on All NUS extra cards purchased online can be collected from the Student Services Desk. 18+ student Oyster card To apply for your Student Oyster card, go online: click on 18+ Student, type in Coventry University London Campus and then complete the form. You will need to upload a picture at this point (if you have problems with the picture size, go to where you can get the picture resized) then submit. The Student Services team will confirm that you are a student and the card will be posted to the address provided. The whole process usually takes about a week. National Insurance number If you plan on working while you are in London, you will need a National Insurance number. The UK number to call for booking National Insurance appointments is Make sure you have your full address including your postcode when you make the call, as they will use this information to work out which office you need to go to for your appointment. 15 Careers & Employability Coventry University London Campus focuses on the employability of its students and has a range of initiatives which will help prepare you for graduate employment. Preparing you for a successful career is central to the design and delivery of our teaching. The Careers and Employability team works closely with your programme coordinators to provide you with additional help and support that can enhance your prospects of success in your chosen career. 14

16 During your studies Information, Advice and Guidance The Careers & Employability team is available to: Help you plan your career Give you the opportunity to recognise and then develop important graduate employment skills Guide and encourage you to market your skills effectively, for example, when filling in application forms and writing your CV Explore all potential employment opportunities Help you identify employers and vacancies that will be of interest to you Offer guidance, support and encouragement throughout recruitment and selection processes All information is available via face to face meetings with a member of the team or via the Student Portal. Placements and Work Experience Employability Workshops An important part of student success is not only due to students achieving a good degree, but also because of the work experience undertaken, contacts made and the skills that have been developed during your time at the University. As a truly global and entrepreneurial university, Coventry University London Campus provides you with opportunities to work with employers (individual or group internships), or undertake possible study or work experience overseas. Employability skills are developed in many different ways at Coventry University London Campus: through your academic programme; volunteering; business challenges and internships/work experience. In addition, the University delivers the ASPIRE programme, which is a series of unique skills and employability workshops, offered to all students. These workshops provide you with an insight into a range of employability skills and they have been designed to give you a competitive edge in the job market. Employability support is offered by the Careers and Employability team, your Academic Tutors and your Student Support Coordinator. So there are lots of people who can help you throughout your university life. 15

17 Engaging with industry and employers The Careers & Employability team recognises the importance of contact with employers during your studies. We arrange for employers to come into the University to provide first hand information on what they require from applicants and the skills you will need to get a graduate job. It is also a good way for you to investigate careers in particular industries or with certain companies. Events include: Employer presentations, Master-Classes and Leadership Lectures Attending the big National Graduate Recruitment events which are held regularly in and around London These events are promoted throughout the year on campus and on the Student Portal. They are organised for you and are designed to help you understand specific business or industry needs, the graduate employment market, make contacts and help achieve your career goals and ambitions. 16

18 Learning Resources The Learning Resource Centre is here to support you throughout your time at CULC. All our information, as well as many online guides and support materials are available online via the CULC Student Portal, at 17

19 When and where? Facilities and collection The LRC is on the fifth floor of East India House, accessed via the stairs or the lift in the East stairwell. The LRC is open from 8am to 8pm, Monday to Friday during term time with up to date opening hours advertised on the Student Portal and in the Learning Resource Centre. The LRC has the Learning Resources and IT Service desk which is available for enquiries. This also provides IT support during advertised hours. We offer self-service facilities to borrow, return and renew your loans. Information on using these are available on the Portal or you can ask a member of staff, who would be happy to show you. The collection includes your required and recommended reading, as well as supporting material and our online collection. We also have a printer, photocopier and scanner in the LRC. The LRC printer also offers A3 printing. Other printers are available around the campus, please ask staff for more details. The LRC provides access to individual quiet study on the campus. If you wish to work as a group, you are able to book a room for group study by ing your request to [email protected]. ac.uk. More information on room bookings can be obtained from Reception on the ground floor. We ask that mobile phones are used outside of the LRC and that you respect your fellow students by keeping conversation to a minimum. Please consume food in the student lounge and don t bring food into the LRC. 18

20 Borrowing and returning items You can see what items are available to borrow through our online library catalogue, Locate, which is available online at london. This will give you online access or details of how many copies, and where you can find it on the shelves. Your Student ID card is also your borrowing card. Please bring this with you in order to use the facilities. We are not able to lend you anything without this card, and we cannot issue items to another person s card. You can borrow up to 6 one week items and 4 one day items, in addition to three week loan items. The loan period is on the spine of each book. Not for loan items may not be borrowed and must be used in the LRC. You can use our self-service machine to borrow and return items. We strongly suggest that you take a receipt as confirmation of when your items are due, as failure to return or renew items by their due date will incur fines. You are responsible for any items that are on your account, so please do not let others use your card. You can use the self-service machine to keep an eye on your account, view your account online through Locate, or of course ask a member of staff. Reserving, requesting and renewing If all the lending copies of a title are out on loan, then you can reserve it for when it is returned through Locate, ( coventry.ac.uk/london). You will have to log into My Account at the top right of the screen with your IT username and password. You will not be able to place a reservation if there are available copies. Your name will be added to a queue and as items are returned those in the reservation queue will be ed to invite them to collect from the LRC. You are also welcome to request items from the Lanchester Library in Coventry. Again, this can be done through Locate. For an online demonstration check out our materials on the student portal. Items will be sent down from Coventry, usually within a week, and you will receive an to your University account when it is ready to be collected from the LRC. Through the My Account feature you can also renew your items up to nine times. If you are approaching nine renewals, please ask LRC staff for advice or return your item. Failure to return or renew on time will incur fines on each item for each day that it is late, so please keep an eye on your account. 19

21 Accessing online resources We have a wealth of electronic resources, such as e-books, e-journals and databases that you can access via Locate. Simply type in the name of the resource and if we have it online, click on the View Online option that will appear. You ll need to log in with your IT username and password. Sessions on how to access our resources will be available; see the Training pages for more information or our online spotlight guides on the Portal. Accessing other libraries We are pleased to help you access other libraries to support your learning. As a degree student of Coventry University, you are welcome to use the Lanchester Library in Coventry, both to visit in person as well as requesting items sent down. We are also part of the SCONUL Access scheme, which allows you access to around 170 university libraries around the UK. For more information on the scheme, visit access.sconul.ac.uk, or ask a member of the LRC staff who would be happy to give you a SCONUL card. Training and support The Learning Resources and IT team have a number of training sessions available throughout the term to support your learning. Look out for the programme of opportunities advertised on the Spotlight section of the Student Portal. Spotlight is the home of skills support from a number of departments, where you will find information supporting your skills development. A range of workshops is available to complement your studies, including such topics as Citing and Referencing, Avoiding Plagiarism and Academic Writing. Workshops will provide practical examples to help you improve your skills and confidence in each topic. You must book your place in advance if you wish to attend a workshop. Simply select your desired workshop from the Spotlight calendar and register your attention to come along. We aim to cover a lot in the workshops, so please ensure that you arrive on time to each session. More information on all aspects of the Learning Resource Centre is available on the Student Portal, coventry.ac.uk/culc/lrit, or look out for announcements around campus and in the Learning Resource Centre. 20

23 IT username During the online enrolment you will be shown your IT username and asked to create a password. Your username will be based on a mixture of your surname and initials. To help you remember your username, write it down in this box. This username and password will be used for all your services: do not share it with anyone and keep it safe. Remember that it will take up to 24 hours for your password and username to be activated on our systems, so you will be able to logon to our systems 24 hours from enrolment. 22

24 Single sign on At CULC you will be able to access all services using the same username and password. To keep your password safe and secure, you should take care to never share your password with anyone. Every term you are required to create a new password. You must do this in order to keep connected to all your CULC services. If you have any queries regarding your username and password please come to the LRC on the 5th floor for help or alternatively you can [email protected]. Laptops and computers You are required to bring a computing device with you each time you are on campus. The device you bring should be suitable for you to type on and it must be internet enabled. If you require a laptop for a short period of time you can borrow one daily from the LRC for 3 charge You can renew your password online at Staff cannot renew your password for you. 23

25 Internet You will be able to connect any modern wi-fi device to our internet connection on campus. With our internet connection you will be able to access all the services that are offer. Remote Desktop The Remote Desktop allows you to work anywhere in the world as long as your computer has an internet connection. During your enrolment week you will attend an IT setup workshop in which staff will guide you through the process of connecting to the Remote Desktop. It is essential that you attend a workshop. The Remote Desktop is a fully functional virtual computer that is supported by all desktop platforms and gives you access to the programmes you need to complete your course. 24

26 Printing As a CULC student you will be given 5000 credits for printing and photocopying. You will have access to A3 printing & scanning and you can top up your print credits with a credit or debit card. Student Portal For student related information and updates to services, timetables and general campus information, students have access to the student portal which can be found on the link below: ac.uk/culc As a CULC student you have an outlook university account for life. This account will be the primary means of communication between the university and yourself. CULC staff will not respond to s from personal accounts and will always use your university . Communications to all students will be placed on the portal and information regarding timetables etc. can be found on the student portal.
