The Golden West College Foundation The Golden West College Foundation was organized in 1985 to solicit and manage gifts to benefit the college and its students. The Foundation is dedicated to supporting the College s mission of providing comprehensive academic opportunities to the community for lifelong learning. A board of directors, which provides the leadership and direction for the organization s operation, manages the Foundation. The Foundation has grown steadily since 1985 with assets over $6,100,000. This has been accomplished through donations of cash, bequests and grants from individuals and businesses. The Foundation has provided over $4,700,000 in scholarships to Golden West College students. In addition to cash assets, the Foundation annually receives donated equipment and supplies that represent thousands of dollars in nonmonetary gifts. The primary focus of the Foundation Board of Directors is to work towards building support for college-wide needs. To nurture groups who have special interests in supporting Golden West College, the Foundation provides staff support and direction to two auxiliaries. Each auxiliary is managed by its own board and officers, requiring membership dues for operational expenses. 2

4 Report from the Foundation Chair Judy Elmore The past year has brought the Golden West College motto, Let Change Be the Tradition, to light in amazing and remarkable ways. The Foundation Board of Directors have forged new community partnerships that have brought unique and abundant opportunities to the students we serve, resulting in the Foundation awarding over 200 scholarships in Since 1986, more than $6.3 million in scholarship dollars have been received by deserving students. This is extremely gratifying to the Foundation as the awarding of scholarships is a direct contributor to our primary goal - student success. On Saturday, March 24, 2012, the Foundation held its 15th annual Golden West College Gala. We are extremely pleased to have raised over $87,000. This performance speaks volumes to the dedication and commitment of our Board Members and supporters. The proceeds have benefited Golden West College students and college programs. We particularly want to thank Elmore Toyota, Union Bank of California, Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian and Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. as major sponsors, as well as all of the underwriters who gave so generously to this event. I would like to extend my sincere thanks to the Gala Committee and the community at large for continuing to support this very important event. We look forward to continued success at our 16th Gala scheduled for March 23, Our 21th annual Courtyard of Honor Ceremony was celebrated last October. Four Golden West College Alumni were honored as Alumni Pillar of Achievement recipients. Since the inception of this awards program in 1991, 93 alumni have been honored. We had two Pillars of Support (+$25,000), including The Coast Community College District Foundation, and Wells Fargo. This year we honored seven Premier Pillars (+$100,000). They are Elmore Toyota, Fountain Valley Regional Hospital, McBeth Foundation, Robert and Kathy Smith, Southern California Edison, Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc., and Union Bank. The donor wall was increased by 40 donor names, with three in the Golden Society ($10,000+) category. This year continued to be a challenge from an investment perspective, but our asset allocation methodology has rewarded us with improvements in our overall financial position from In closing, I would like to personally thank the Foundation Board of Directors and those who have provided advice, counsel, professional guidance, financial support and personal time to the Board during this past year. It is not often that I have had the unique opportunity to work with such a dedicated group for such a worthy cause. I also extend my sincere appreciation to the community at large, which has continued to support the Foundation and the college with its generosity. Without this dedication, our work would not be possible. The Foundation s objectives for 2013 include increasing the Board s role in fostering student success, expanding Board membership, and continuing a high level of participation from our members. We are also looking towards to a successful Gala fundraising event, while continuing to seek fresh ideas for new fund raising opportunities. 5 Message from Golden West College President, Wes Bryan The other day while shopping in a local store, I had a short conversation with a young man and his wife. I first met him at Golden West College. He is a returning Veteran, getting ready to transfer, taking the next big step to make his life and that of his wife and child a better one after his years of service to our country. That short conversation helped me reflect on the good we do for so many student Veterans. I think, because of the proximity of my office to the Veterans Support Center, I have had many opportunities to observe him and other Veterans, as they transition back to civilian life. You can imagine that this transition is not an easy one they have had a big chunk of their early adult life interrupted. A quick plane ride home and suddenly they were thrust back into the life they were leading before the service, yet all of it changed while they were gone. Picking these pieces up is often like putting humpty dumpty back together again. Fortunately, we are here to help because of the resources provided by the Foundation and those who support it. We can all agree that one of the best choices a person can make is to get the kind of education that enhances a career by enabling a student to transfer to a university or complete a certificate for their career. That challenge becomes increasingly difficult in these times of economic uncertainty. I talk with students week after week who are on the cusp of staying in college or dropping out. Their breaking point is seldom lack of willingness, desire or motivation; it is the increasing cost for text books or supplies. The state has waived their fees due to a demonstrated need, they have met with the counselor and know what course they need to take, and they even have priority registration what made the difference was the generosity of the people named in this report. That gift, large or small, combined with others helped weave a lifeline, which saved one more student one more time. Seeing that happen week after week fills me with gratitude. Students share with me similar feelings of gratitude because we have been able to assist them and they often ask me to pass their thanks on to you, our donors, who make it possible. Year after year, donors continue to offer lifelines to Golden West College students, to help them stay in school, purchase necessary supplies, helping to make their dreams of a better future a possibility. What s even more interesting is reading through the list to see how many of these donors have themselves been benefactors of the educational opportunities others made possible for them. It doesn t seem to matter if it s a Veteran, a high school drop-out returning to school for a second chance, or an honor student who could not afford a UC school, and is in need of a text book the Foundation is here to help because of your generosity. 6 Southern California Edison Supports GWC Veterans In November 2012, Southern California Edison (SCE) awarded a grant in the amount of $25,000 to the Golden West College Veterans Scholarship Fund. Edison s commitment to investing in educational programs that make the strongest impact, especially during economically challenged times, will allow our Veteran students to continue towards their educational goals. Jenelle Godges, SCE Region Manager, Local Public Affairs, Director on the GWC Foundation Board, and GWC Gala Co- Chair has been instrumental in seeking grants for Golden West College. With a quarter of a million dollars in grants provided to date, SCE has shown its commitment to education and the betterment of our community. Key areas of support for these grants are: Green Jobs and Environmental Technology Education Veterans Educational Resources and Scholarships Fundraising Events supporting student scholarships, programs and services on campus The Golden West College community is proud and grateful for our alliance with Southern California Edison. Veterans Resource Center receives community support and student veterans Pay it Forward Although the GWC Veterans Resource Center operates without campus funding, it is well equipped with furniture, computer equipment and food (for the mess hall ) all thanks to generous donations from community organizations, and individuals (listed to the right). Student veterans have also received numerous scholarships and personal financial assistance. The GWC Student Veterans Organization (SVO) decided to pay it forward and send care packages to Marine and Army units in Afghanistan. They held a fundraising event on Veteran s Day, and along with private donations, managed to raise $600 to purchase the items. What better person to give a care package than a veteran? We know what they need, said SVO President Matt Muggia. You want something good that reminds you of home to make you forget where you are for a moment. They made sure only the best made its way into the care package. The boxes were stuffed with books, socks, movies, snacks, toiletries, and a note from a GWC student. It touches your heart, said Golden West President Wes Bryan as he watched his student veterans put together the care packages. They themselves have been through so much and they re connecting back with people who they know are experiencing the same things they did. It s pretty cool, they received and now they re giving back. 12 Opportunity Drawing Winner Miriam Moser, retiree from Orange Coast College, is the lucky winner of a 2012 Toyota Camry, the seventh vehicle donated by Elmore Toyota for the annual GWC Gala fundraiser. Miriam was shocked when she received the call from Elmore Toyota s General Manager David McHowell and at first she didn t believe him, Are you kidding! was her only response. She has purchased a ticket every year that a vehicle has been offered for the Gala opportunity drawing and was thrilled that she won the Camry. A volunteer organization that raises funds for scholarships through its Chefs for Scholarships event each fall, the members also volunteer hundreds of hours each year in support of other events such as Commencement, Scholarships and Awards, and Gala. Chefs For Scholarships A Perfect Recipe for a Delicious Day Out Food, fun and festivities were on the menu for over 500 guests at the Golden West College Patrons 7th Annual Chefs for Scholarships event on September 23, This popular community event has become the unofficial end to the lazy, hazy days of summer and the beautiful Golden West College campus was the perfect setting for a relaxing and enjoyable afternoon with friends and family. Chefs from outstanding eateries in Huntington Beach and surrounding areas served everything from barbecue and pastas to foods representing the tastes of Japan, Germany, Mexico, Hawaii, France and more! (Along with scrumptious desserts and outstanding wines and beer!) Music filled the air as guests selected their favorite song on a jukebox and the Swing Kittens sang a sizzling set of three-part harmony. Chefs for Scholarships is all about food and fun, but it s also about doing something really good in our community: raising funds for scholarships. This year s focus was on the educational needs of returning veterans. Young men and women who have given our country years of their lives in service often find themselves at a crossroads upon returning home. Cuts in federal and state budgets very often impact their ability to pay for their educational needs in pursuit of a new career. Chefs for Scholarships helps to fill that gap. The Chefs for Scholarships fundraising event netted $25,000. In 2012, the GWC Patrons awarded 22 scholarships, the Golden Chef Alumni Award, supported the Foster Youth program and the Veterans Resource Center, and funded a scholarship for a returning combat veteran to complete the police academy. 12

14 Hens & Chickens Quilt Auxiliary Blankets wrap you in warmth, quilts wrap you in love. The Hens & Chickens Quilt Fellowship of Golden West College, an auxiliary of the Foundation, began in 1989 when a group of quilters did not want to disband after having taken a quilting class at Golden West College. Their name, Hens & Chickens, was taken from the name of a quilt block. Originally a group of 5, they have been 25 members strong and range in age from 12 years to 80. Each year, they make an opportunity quilt and donate the funds to GWC scholarships as well as contributions to the campus for such projects as theater renovations, ballet bars for the dance department, new library books, a Fine Arts Gallery security system, Science Museum supplies and recently a brick entryway for the GWC California Native Plant Garden. This year s quilt was called The Flower Basket Quilt. The blocks were created by Hens & Chickens members using Asian themed fabrics and measured 54 x 63. Those who sleep under a quilt, sleep under a blanket of love ~Unknown STAR Book Reserve Program Supports Student Success For the eighth consecutive year, the Golden West College Foundation has allotted funds to the GWC Library for the purchase of textbooks under the STAR (Student Textbook Access Reserve Collection) Book Program. This program, which began in the school year, gives students access to over 190 titles covering 29 academic departments. Last year, students checked out books from the STAR collection over 4,924 times. The top books are the very expensive math and science textbooks. Chemistry was used 30 times and Biology has been used 30 times. The STAR program has become a great success among students who wish to get a jump start on their studies, and to those students who can t afford to purchase a full complement of textbooks. About the Award: The Huntington Beach Chamber of Commerce Educational Partnership Award is presented to an individual or business who has demonstrated a significant dedication to furthering the Huntington Beach K-14 school system. This partnership may be financial, internship, or program development based. GWCF Snowflake The Light a Light of Love snowflakes support the Huntington Beach Youth Shelter. The Youth Shelter is an emergency crisis and intervention program for youth ages 11 to 17. Duck-A-Thon The Duck-A-Thon supports AltaMed s Huntington Beach Clinic. The Clinic provides health care to those who are in need in the community. Hundreds of rubber ducks are purchased and tossed off the Huntington Beach Pier. The first organization s duck that comes to shore first receives the coveted Duck Trophy. 14

El Viento The El Viento Foundation provides children and young adults with opportunities for a successful life as responsible citizens though a long-term relationship based on leadership, mutual respect and trust, teamwork, learning and skills building. El Viento is changing the perspectives, expectations and well being of the Oak View community in Huntington Beach. The program begins in 4th grade through 12th grade with the opportunity to receive a full two-year scholarship to attend one of the Coast Community College District colleges. Project Self-Sufficiency Foundation The Project Self-Sufficiency Foundation directly supports the Project Self-Sufficiency parents in education, housing, childcare and transportation costs. PSS participants are single parents, unemployed or underemployed, and highly motivated to work towards achieving independence from government assistance programs. They achieve marketable skills through vocational training, certificated education programs and/or a college education. HB Rotary + GWC = Science Showtime! In September, Golden West College teamed up with the Rotary Club of Huntington Beach to offer an evening of hands-on science for school children in our local area. Hundreds of families enjoyed exhibits and science activities in the physical and life sciences. The event was spread out over a large area on campus, in Math/Science classrooms, the Student Center and patio, and various outdoor areas. GWC faculty, students and community volunteers offered fun science activities, such as, making slime, building and launching rockets, riding a solar powered go-cart, riding a bike to generate electricity, collecting DNA, and identifying counterfeit money. The business community came together to help make the event a success. 19 Alumni Pillars of Achievement The Alumni Pillar of Achievement program was initiated by the 25th Anniversary Committee in As a part of this celebration, the first honorees were installed on September 12, This past October the Foundation inducted four new recipients, bringing the total number of inductees to 90. Candidates shall have completed at least 30 units at Golden West College ten years prior to their nomination and achieved notable recognition in their field of endeavor. What do two Educators, a Police Chief, and a Major League Baseball Player have in common? They all got their start at Golden West College Honored Alumni Kevin Elster - Professional Athletics Kevin Elster, a resident of Huntington Beach, is a retired Major League Baseball shortstop. He s been named one the of Top 50 Mets Players, playing for six different ball clubs during his career: the New York Mets ( ), New York Yankees ( ), Philadelphia Phillies (1995), Texas Rangers (1996 and 1998), Pittsburgh Pirates (1997), and Los Angeles Dodgers (2000). He made his Major League Baseball debut on September 2, 1986, and played his final game on October 1, Elster was selected by the Mets in the second round of the 1984 January amateur draft out of Golden West College. In the seasons, Elster set the major league record for consecutive games without an error for a shortshop at 88 games. On April 11, 2000, Elster hit three home runs in the first game played at Pacific Bell Park in San Francisco. Kevin appeared in the 1994 movie, Little Big League, playing the part of character Pat Corning. 18

20 Rick Lara - Education Rick attended Golden West College from 1973 to 1975 as a student-athlete where he developed skills in handball, racquetball, football and wrestling. In addition, Rick honed his communications skills in the speech classes he was enrolled in. After graduating with an AA degree in 1975, Rick transferred to CSULB, where he received a Bachelor of Arts in English and Speech Communication, as well as a teaching credential. Rick went on to earn a Master of Arts in Education from Azusa Pacific University. Rick Lara began his 35-year career as an educator and coach as an inaugural staff member of Ocean View High School. He then went on to start the legendary Speech and Communications Department at Irvine High School, which he helmed for 16 years. As a member of football and wrestling coaching staffs, Rick helped lead many teams to CIF championships. Rick was honored as a Teacher of the Year in 1979, 1984, 1994 and 2004, and was named an Orange County Assistant Coach of the Year in 1994, 1997 and Rick currently teaches for the Rancho Santiago College District, and the Santa Ana Unified School District. Chief Todd Mattern - Policing Services In 1985, Todd Mattern enrolled in the GWC Police Academy as an independent recruit and shortly after graduation, he was appointed as a reserve police officer in Cypress. In 1986, Chief Mattern joined the Los Alamitos Police Department as a full-time police officer, and in 1987, he was recognized as Officer of the Year. Todd Mattern became the eighth Chief of Police in the City of Los Alamitos in 2008 and holds the distinction of being the first officer in Los Alamitos history to rise through the ranks to head the Department. Mattern earned a Certificate of Achievement in Administration of Justice at Golden West College, an AA degree from Coastline Community College, and his Bachelor of Science degree in Occupational Studies from California State University, Long Beach. Additionally, Chief Mattern is a graduate of the prestigious FBI National Academy. Brandee Williams - Education Brandee Williams, is an Orange County educator and long time arts advocate, especially in the areas of theatre and dance. Throughout the 1990 s, Brandee Williams directed more than a dozen award-winning full-scale musicals at GWC. Williams worked tirelessly to create and see to fruition an arts magnet high school on the HBHS campus. Thanks to these foundational efforts, and the efforts of several arts advocates in the city, this high school program continues to thrive to this day. After graduating from GWC in 1979 with an Associate of Arts degree, Williams enjoyed a successful career in entertainment, which included national tours, film and television. Williams returned to school and received a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre, and later a Master of Fine Arts in Dance, both from California State University, Long Beach. Currently, Williams teaches dance and physical education in the Tustin Unified School District. She was named Teacher of the Year while an inaugural staff member of Century High School in the Santa Ana Unified School District and has been named in Who s Who Among America s Teachers numerous times. 19

21 GWC Alumnus Making a Difference... Chief Jackie Gomez- Whiteley Community Policing Service with Honor. On October 28, 2010, Golden West College inducted Captain Jackie Gomez-Whiteley of the Cypress Police Department as an Alumni Pillar of Achievement recipient. Now, Chief Gomez-Whiteley enters her 26th year as an enforcement professional. She began her career as a Police Explorer for the Los Alamitos Police Department in October 1978 and later advanced to Police Cadet in July Chief Gomez-Whiteley attended Loyola Marymount University on a basketball scholarship where she received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology with a minor in Alcohol and Drug Studies. Upon completion of her undergraduate studies, she entered the police academy at the Golden West College Criminal Justice Training Center. She was hired by the Orange Police Department in September While at the Orange Police Department, Jackie rose through the ranks and became the department s first woman motor officer, sergeant and lieutenant. She has worked a number of different assignments and supervised all three divisions: Patrol, Investigative Services and Administrative Services. In 1989, Chief Gomez-Whiteley was involved in an officer-involved shooting of a kidnap and attempted murder suspect. As a result of her actions, she was awarded the Orange Police Department s Medal of Valor, as well as honored by both the Rotary Club and American Legion. In 2007, Chief Gomez-Whiteley graduated from the P.O.S.T. Command College, where she published an article in Police and Security News Magazine titled: Dirty Bombs: Calculating the Threat. In 2009, she completed her Master of Arts degree in Organizational Leadership at Chapman University and also received a certificate in Public and Non-Profit Leadership. Chief Gomez-Whiteley is an instructor and former Recruit Training Officer at the Golden West College Criminal Justice Training Center and has been on staff since She was the inaugural Program Coordinator for the Leadership and Ethics Institute and now serves on the steering committee. In October 2010, Chief Gomez-Whiteley was honored as the recipient of the Alumni Pillar of Achievement Award at Golden West College for her commitment to community-oriented policing. Chief Gomez-Whiteley is also an instructor at the POST Management Course at the San Diego Regional Training Center. She actively mentors law enforcement professionals through the California Peace Officers Association mentorship program and the Women Leaders in Law Enforcement. 20

22 Chief Gomez-Whiteley is a volunteer and President of Officers Give Hope, a nonprofit organization dedicated to hosting marrow donor drives in the law enforcement community throughout California. To date, Officers Give Hope has been involved in extending the lives of more than 50 people through marrow transplants. In November 2008, Officers Give Hope was the recipient of the prestigious National Service Award presented by the National Marrow Donor Program in Minneapolis, Minnesota. In 2009, Chief Gomez-Whiteley was hired by the Cypress Police Department where she oversaw both divisions: Support Services and Operations during her tenure as Captain. In these roles, she worked closely with department staff in implementing best practices regarding recruitment and hiring, professional standards, and current policies and procedures. In 2011, Jackie was appointed Chief of Police when her predecessor accepted the Chief of Police position for another Department. In April 2012, Crime Survivors awarded the Community-Policing Organization of the Year to the Cypress Police Department for an innovative character-based program for grade six students called PACE Positive Actions thru Character Education. Chief Gomez-Whiteley serves on a number of boards, including the Cypress Police Foundation, Fullerton College Police Academy Chiefs Advisory Council and Cypress College Foundation. Additionally, she serves as the Secretary on the Executive Board of the Cypress College Foundation and as Chair for the Golden West College Criminal Justice Training Center Chief s Advisory Board. Chief Gomez-Whiteley is responsible for coordinating the Southern California region of the Women Leaders in Law Enforcement organization, which is sponsored by the California Police Chiefs Association. She is a member of the California Police Chiefs Association, Orange County Police Chiefs and Sheriff Association, California Peace Officers Association, International Association of Chiefs of Police. Cypress Police Chief Jackie Gomez-Whiteley meets with members of the community during the annual National Night Out (NNO), 2012 Crime and Drug Prevention event. Sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW) and co-sponsored by the Cypress Police Department, NNO involves over 15,000 communities from all 50 states, U.S. Territories, Canadian cities, and military bases around the world. GWC Alumni Association Founded in 2009, the GWC Alumni Association is committed to bringing together alumni from all walks of life. We are a rapidly expanding organization and are proud to carry forward the Golden West College legacy. The upcoming year will be a very exciting time. Donation of a life insurance policy to the Foundation entitles the donor to a tax deduction for the cash surrender value. Gifts-In-Kind (Non-Cash Donations) Donations of personal property, including vehicles, equipment and supplies, are gratefully accepted by the Golden West College Foundation.
