1 AUTOMATIC CALL RECORDER JAMECO PART NO Experience Level: Intermediate Time Required: 1-2 Hours This project automatically records phone calls. The program, along with the adapter records each phone call by sensing whether the phone is ON/OFF the hook creating a separate file for each phone call. It includes a switch to record from a microphone while in automatic mode. There is also a manual mode for phone calls and microphone. When in automatic mode, each time you answer your phone the recording screen appears showing that the call is being recorded. When you hang up the file is automatically stored in a directory of your choice and the screen hides again until the next call is answered. There are also options to delete or rename the file after hanging up. The program also includes a playback and file maintenance screen for playing, deleting, renaming call files and finding other files on your computer. A third screen allows you to select where you want to store the files. 2 Step 1 - Verify Kit Contents Open the kit and lay out all the parts. Using the Bill of Materials, be sure you have all the parts. Also make sure you have all the tools and materials at hand not included in kit. Before building kit please visit for any updates to these instructions, adapter or program. For support, send an to acrsup@gmail.com Step 2 - Important Precautions When inserting the components in the PCB, be sure not to catch any edges on the copper side of the board. This may cause the copper pads to loosen and/or separate from the PCB. Be careful when soldering the components to the copper pads. Too high or prolonged heat may cause the pads to loosen and/or separate from the PCB. Be careful when mounting components with several pins. Make sure all the pins are straight. Take your time, to make sure all the pins are aligned with their respective holes. DO NOT try to force them in place. Watch for crossover solder joints when soldering pins close to each other. Be careful when trimming the leads. You want to trim the leads as close as possible to the PCB without damaging the solder joint. Make sure you cut the lead off without any side to side movement. This may cause the copper pad to loosen and/or separate from the PCB. I find it easiest to start with the smallest component first. This way you can lay the board on a flat surface to help hold components in place while soldering without the other mounted components interfering. Make sure the switch is installed correctly. Pins 4 and 5 are the pins used. Step 3 Installing the Components Mount, solder and trim the leads of components in the following order. 3 Step 4 - Optional Enclosure It s a good idea to mount the adapter in a suitable enclosure to protect it from damage and the elements. Step 5 - Connect the Adapter to the Computer Connect the incoming phone line to one of the modular jacks on the adapter. Using another phone cord, connect the phone to the other modular jack on the adapter. Using a 3.5mm audio cable, connect one of the audio jacks on the adapter to the microphone input of the sound card. If you have a Microphone, plug it into the other audio jack on the adaptor, (microphone not required). Using a male-to-female serial cable, connect the DB9 connector on the adapter to the 9-pin serial port on your computer. If your computer does not have a 9-pin serial port available, use a serial-to-usb adapter and connect it to a USB port on your computer. Step 6 - Install Program Software download link: Download Recorder.zip and extract it. Run the setup-up program. Follow the on-screen instruction. Installation may require you to download additional support programs so make sure you allow or accept these installations. After installation the program should start. If not, there should be a shortcut on your Desktop and Start Menu. Use one of them to start the program. Follow any instructions that may appear. Use the help files to set up your preferences for the program. NOTE: I recommend installing a short cut to the program in the Startup folder so the program runs when the computer is started. Follow the help file for your operating system to accomplish this.

4 Step 7 - Setup and Adjust Start/Stop Recording The adapter has to be adjusted using the trimmer pot for correct ON/OFF hook voltages. Be sure the adapter is connected and program is running. Turn the trimmer counter-clockwise until you see the recorder start recording. The Record button will turn red and the filename will appear. Turn the trimmer slightly clockwise and wait 2 seconds. Repeat until button turns black indicating recording stopped. Activate your phone so you can hear a dial tone. The record button should turn red (recording). Hang up and button should turn black (Stop). Setting Options 1. Can be set for Manual or Automatic recording for Telephone and/or Microphone. When in Manual Mode, clicking on the ON/OFF Button Starts and Stops the recorder for the telephone or a microphone connected to the adaptor. When in Automatic Mode, Starts and Stops when Telephone is answered and hung up. When in Automatic Mode, turning the switch ON/OFF Starts and Stops the recording for a Microphone if connected to the adaptor. When in Automatic Mode, if Call is answered by an Answering Machine, the recorder will also record the Message. No need to save the Messages on the answering machine. 2. Creates a separate wav file for each Phone Call. When a call is recorded from the Telephone, the file has a prefix of Call. When a call is recorded from the Microphone, the file has a prefix of Mic. 3. Options to Delete or Rename the files when Telephone is hung up. Selecting the Check Boxes will allow prompts for Deleting and/or Renaming files at the time the Phone is hung up. Once prompt shows, if a selection is not made in 15 seconds prompt screen closes and treats the file as if an Answering Machine answered. Adding the suffix Ans. When Renaming the files, what you type as the new name replaces the prefix. The Date, Time and Suffix stay the same. 4. Includes several screens. All screens have their own Help Files. Main Screen 1. Recording ON/OFF button to Start/Stop recording in Manual Mode. 2. Selection of Automatic/Manuals Mode. 3. Selection to Hide/Show screen. 4. Selection to Prompt for deleting file at call time. 5. Selection to Prompt for renaming file at call time. 6. Navigation to other screens. Show/Play Files Button opens the file maintenance screen. 1. Rename, Delete and Play files. When Renaming the files, what you type as the new name replaces the prefix. The Date, Time and Suffix stay the same. 2. Navigate through all directories on your computer. Hide Recorder button initially Hides the Main Screen in automatic mode. Once hidden in Automatic Mode, the Screen appears when Phone is answered and hides when hung up. Close Recorder button completely shuts down the recorder. Screen Help button opens help screen for the Main Screen. button opens screen to select where you want the call files saved.

5 CIRCUIT OVERVIEW The first section of the circuit consists of the phone connection and ON/OFF hook sensing circuit. One end of the PCB has two 6x4 modular jacks. The incoming phone line connects to one jack and the phone connects to the other. The circuit is polarity sensitive so the 4 diodes connected to the input jacks insure the polarity is always correct. These are connected to the On Hook / Off Hook sensing circuit which consist of 4 Resisters, Capacitor, Trimmer and N-channel MOSFET. When the phone is off hook the MOSFET gate voltage rises grounding the LED in the optocoupler causing it to turn on. The Trimmer is used to adjust gate voltage for best performance. The current used by the circuit is within the 20mA range so as not to interfere with the phone network. The second part of the circuit consist of the controlling circuit for the Serial / USB Port which in turn tells the program when to stop and start the recording. When the LED in the optocoupler turns on, off hook, the Serial port, DB9 connector, sends a pin change to the computer. The Recording Program reads the pin change on the port and tells the sound card to start recording. When the LED turns off, on hook, another pin change is sent to the computer. The program reads the pin change and stops the recording and saves the file. The third part of the circuit consists of the supply voltage circuit. I wanted to make this adapter selfcontained meaning I would have to use the voltage from the Serial Port which is approximately 12 volts. I also wanted to use a Serial to USB adapter so the user could have a choice between Serial and USB to connect to the computer. The USB voltage is approximately 5v. Seeing the sensing circuit depends on this voltage to be consistent, switching from Serial to USB or vice versa caused the sensing circuit problems. My solution was a voltage doubler, ICL7660 circuit and V regulator. Both voltages are doubled and fed into a 7805 voltage regulator providing a stable 5 volts.
