Roundtable introductions began and everyone introduced themselves. The first half of the meeting was focused on Cyber Information Technology (CIT) and the second half was focused on Computer Information Systems (CIS). The Committee on National Security Systems is going through a total revamp at the national level. We are now mapped to the new Knowledge Units (KU) and recertify as a Center of Academic Excellence for the two year (CAE2Y). Last year, we proposed to not replace all computers in our labs but instead rely more heavily on students to bring their own computers to class. Some of the desktop computers were moved out so that students will have room for their laptops. This has really worked well for our students.
2 We have closed our lab at Barksdale due to changes in DoD requirements. The Education Center requested that we refrain from offering classes on base. On March 9 th and 10 th, our accreditation team, Association of Technology, Management, and Applied Engineering (ATMAE) visited our campus. Our CIS and CIT programs were granted reaccreditation with a 2-year follow-up report. A chair is needed for our Advisory Board Meetings as well as a firm roster of members. Sandra Partain discussed the Employer Surveys in detail and explained how if the industry members hire one of our graduates, then they will get a survey to fill out. The curriculum was discussed for both Networking and Programming, and there have been no changes thus far. The program outcomes were reviewed and a suggestion was made to reword some of the outcomes. For Network Security learning outcome E, it should be reworded to state an application of computer networks and firewalls. Another suggestion was to work in debugging and testing into the Programmer Analyst Concentration learning outcomes. Angie White made a motion to accept and approve the noted changes for the program learning outcomes, the curriculum, and the program length for the AAS in Cyber Information Technology (Network Security Concentration) and for the AAS in Cyber Information Technology (Programmer Analyst Concentration). Cesar Marrero seconded the motion. All approved with no opposition. Chris Shaw discussed the new process of certifications. The student is no longer required to take the certification at the end of the course. The link is located on our website Beginning in fall 2015, when entered into the internship course, students will be required to either have two nationally recognized certs OR complete a portfolio before graduating. Geoff Lucas made a motion to accept and approve the removal of the required certifications from the courses and the addition of the required certifications in the internship. Angie White seconded the motion. All approved with no opposition. TestOut software and the nature in which it is used in our courses to prep for certifications was discussed. The industry members stated they did not recognize TestOut, and they would have to look further into it. The portfolio rubric which will be used to grade the students program submissions in the internship course was discussed next. The portfolio is still a work in progress. A list of programming languages that are acceptable need to be added to the portfolio requirements. Discussion was made that in the internship course, the student would have the option to choose to complete two certifications or to complete a programming portfolio. The industry members stated that valuable certifications are job specific. The internship course description will need to be updated to reflect changes. If prior learning credit has been used already for a certification
3 course, this certification cannot be used as a certification for the internship. Also discussed was to change security elective to CIT elective on the curriculum sheet. Jason Cooper made a motion to approve to adding the certifications and the portfolio into the internship course. Zach Burson seconded the motion. All approved with no opposition. The second half of the meeting focused on the Computer Information Systems (CIS) degree. Pam Milstead explained that CIS would like to make some major changes to the current curriculum to better prepare CIS students for more job opportunities. The CIS curriculum changes include adding some new required courses, deleting some current required courses, updating some required courses, and adding soft skills modules to all required CIS courses. After the CIS curriculum was discussed, voting began on several items. Geoff Lucas made a motion to keep the current learning outcomes the same for CIS until summer of Cesar Marrero seconded the motion. All approved with no opposition. Geoff Lucas made a motion to approve the current curriculum and program length to be in effect until summer Sandra Partain seconded the motion. All approved with no opposition. The following motions were made to be implemented into the year: Chris Rondeau made a motion to remove CIS 105 and replace with CIS 100 as a required course in the CIS curriculum. Zach Burson seconded the motion. All approved with no opposition. Geoff Lucas made a motion to remove CIS 141 and replace with CIS 140 as a required course in the CIS curriculum. Jeremy Cave seconded the motion. All approved with no opposition. Jeremy Cave made a motion to remove CIS 210 as a required course and replace with CIS/CIT Elective in the CIS curriculum. Geoff Lucas seconded the motion. All approved with no opposition. Jason Cooper made a motion to remove CIS 205 or CIS 207 and replace with CIS/CIT Elective in the curriculum. Cesar Marrero seconded the motion. All approved with no opposition. Sandra Partain made a motion to include CIS 106 as a required course in the CIS curriculum. Chris Shaw seconded the motion. All approved with no opposition. Cesar Marrero made a motion to table the creating of the new hands-on hardware/software course, the new hands-on networking course, and the new Help Desk course until it can be discussed further.
4 Pam Milstead and Chris Rondeau expressed their appreciation and thanked everyone for coming. Sandra Partain expressed her appreciation of all attendees and their constant support. 5 1 CIT Advisory Board April 10, :00pm-3:00pm 2-2:10 Introductions 2:10-2:20 Division Highlights/Updates The Committee on National Security Systems This program is going through a total revamp at the national level. We have successfully mapped to the new KU and recertify as a Center of Academic Excellence for the two Year (CAE2Y). Lab Updates Last year we proposed to not replace all machines in our labs, but rely more heavily on students to bring their own machines to class. This has seemed to be embraced by our students. We used the extra monitors to set up areas were students with their own machines can have dual display if they would like as well as power and Ethernet cable if they prefer over WiFi. Barksdale Lab Closed Due to changes in DoD requirements the Education Center requested that we pull out from offering classes on base, however we still maintain the BPCC testing center. Program Outcomes/Curriculum (Voting Item) This year for the CIT program in both Networking and Programming there have been no changes. However we are required to review the outcomes. Are there any changes that are felt need to be made? ATMAE An accreditation team from the Association of Technology, Management, and Applied Engineering (ATMAE) visited our campus on March 9th and 10th. All seven programs up for review, including our CIS and CIT programs) were granted reaccreditation with a 2-year follow-up report. The two main issues that these programs will need to work on are survey data distribution and collection and advisory board guidelines. 2:20-2:50 New Items Certifications (Voting Item) Starting January 1, 2015 we are no longer requiring certification exams as part of the courses. Students may still order and take certs on BPCC campus in our testing center. We still strive to have the courses mapped to these exams to help prepare students for them. Certification vouchers are ordered the 15 th of each month or order directly from CompTIA. There will be a two certification requirement OR portfolio requirement attended in the Internship course. Internships/Apprenticeships (Voting Item) Starting in the Fall of 2015 we will be requiring students to either have two nationally recognized certs OR complete a portfolio. Please refer to following pages for a suggested list of certifications. If there are any listed that you question or others that you feel would be an asset please let us know. Also information for Portfolio rubric can be found on attached pages. NOTE: If there are certifications or requirements for the portfolio that you feel should be added please let us know. 2:50-3:00 Wrap up and Closing remarks / Comments Suggestions
