1 Metropolitan Community College Cisco & Network Security Advisory Board Meeting & Luncheon Minutes June 10, 2013 Attendance: Rich Curasi(Private consultant), Kate Douglas(MCC), Mike O Brian(Blue Ridge Bank), Peter Latessa(ESG), Julie Akers(WACC), Mary Brown(MCC), Suzanne Hommertzheim(Henderson Engineers), Eric MacEwen(NNSA/MCC), Alfred Franz(City of Kansas City), Tatia Shelton(MCC), Tom Wheeler(MCC), Brian Hurley(MCC), Amy Lagermann(MCC) 1. Introductions 2. Cisco Academy Evolution & MCC s Role The previous regional academy and local academy roles no longer exist. As part of Academy Evolution, MCC now holds three roles within the academy structure. We are currently offer the following support: o Cisco Academy offering for credit courses to students o Instructor Training Center offering instructor training o Academy Support Center providing support to Cisco Academies in high schools, career centers, community colleges and universities We have 2 full-time faculty positions to help provide these services 3. A.A.S. Degrees & Certificates a. A.A.S. Computer Science/Info Systems: Cisco (CCNA) emphasis b. A.A.S. Computer Science/Info Systems: Cisco CCNP emphasis c. A.A.S. Computer Science/Info Systems: CCNA & Security emphasis d. A.A.S. Computer Science/Info Systems: Systems Administration and Engineering e. A.A.S. Computer Science/Info Systems: Cyber Security f. Four Cisco Certificates: Cisco Academy, CCNA & Security, CCNA & CCNP and Cisco & Technology g. Certificate: Systems Administration & Engineering Cyber Security will be replacing the Security AAS The average age of our Cisco students in the evening is Cyber Security Industry has expressed that they have a hard time finding people with this knowledge and are looking forward to this new degree. We are in the Missouri CSEC Cyber Security Education Consortium through the University of Tulsa as funded by the National Science Foundation Grant. Students completing this new degree will be closer to having the criteria they need for security class will have to take and pass this exam

2 Industry reps reported that when they are doing interviews, they check credit scores and do background checks These are things we need to let students know about before they get into the program, so they are aware before pursuing education and career in this field. This is true for the health care industry as well. Ethical hacking and non-ethical hacking, this question is not asked 4. CSIS 290 Capstone Class for CSIS degrees a. Overview b. Industry feedback Students study for CCNA exam and take the exam to pass this course This course is offered at the MCC-BT campus, this was the third time it was offered, 50% took the exam MCC-Blue River students take the Network+ exam for the Systems Administration and Engineering A.A.S. degree. Melissa Napper is the contact on this degree. MCC-Longview contact is Cindy Herbert, and MCC-Maplewoods contact is Mark Murtha for their respective CSIS 290 certification exams. Students take practice exams to prepare for certification. Cisco program uses MeasureUp and the Cisco Press library. The question was posed as to whether we could include exam certification cost as a fee with tuition. In other words, build the cost into the degree. Tatia mentioned that her former employer did this. Cisco students can earn a 50% off voucher for the CCNA certification exam as long as they score high enough on the final exam. Pell pays tuition and fees. Julie Akers asked if the fee could just be applied to the one CSIS 290 class. Tom Wheeler suggested the best way to build the certification testing fee into the A.A.S. would be to spread the certification fee across all CSIS courses in the respective degree. Benefit of them having to pay part of the fees for the exam is to give the student ownership of taking the exam; however, there is concern that students not testing simply cannot afford to pay out of pocket for the exam. These students could be on pell grant or other financial aid. Have student take practices and reach a certain percentage before taking the exam c. ** Tom Wheeler made a motion to add fees across the CSIS courses within a degree. Mary Brown seconded the motion. Vote was taken. o Motion approved

Brian stated that he would like to see a course focusing on cabling, working with racks and servers, physical controls, etc. He stated that MCC is working on a course through MOHealthWINS and/or TAACCT III grant that addresses these items.
