2 introduction which career? Which industry can claim to have one of the greatest influences over how we lead our lives today? That s right engineering. The engineering industry offers a wide range of employment opportunities that are equally important to both the UK economy and how we live our everyday lives. This booklet tells you which courses are available in Kent and Medway to help you get qualified for a career in engineering. You may choose to do one course that might help your employment prospects, or to take a series of courses over a flexible period of time. You could even choose to learn through an apprenticeship and/or work based learning. Because there are so many different places to start in the engineering industry, this booklet highlights some of the most common careers, as well as some of the not so common ones! There is also a similar Aimhigher booklet called Routes into the Construction Industry in Kent and Medway. It may be worth your time to check this booklet out too, as it contains information about educational routes into civil engineering. Similarly, there is also a booklet called Routes into Information Technology and Telecommunications in Kent and Medway which you may find useful if you are interested in IT and software engineering. Take a look at the three progression route maps enclosed at the back of this booklet. The first covers automotive engineering from motor vehicle courses at 1 through to degree level. The second identifies courses in mechanical and manufacturing engineering, whilst the third map covers electronic and electrical courses. All of the progression maps indicate the courses that are available in your area and what type of employment or further courses they can lead to. Contact details of colleges, universities and training providers are listed at the back of this booklet. (Albert Einstein, physicist, ) What is engineering? ing is the application of maths and science to create something of value from our natural resources. s use science and technology to come up with the answers to practical problems. They design, develop, build, fix and put together all types of things. There are all sorts of engineers working in hundreds of different industries. These industries can be categorised as: General ing Aeronautical ing Chemical and Materials ing Computer ing Electrical and Electronic ing Mechanical ing and Manufacturing Naval Architecture and Marine ing Offshore ing and Mining To get into any of these engineering industries you can start on the courses shown in the progression route maps in the back of this booklet There are five main levels that you can work at as an engineer: Operative You do not need qualifications for most operative jobs, but many employers prefer you to study for a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) at 1 or 2. Craft You normally need 4 GCSEs grade D or above, including English, maths and a science or technology subject. You will train to NVQ 2 and/or. Technician You normally need 4 or 5 GCSEs grade A-C including English, maths, a science subject or a technological subject. You will train to NVQ. Incorporated To become an Incorporated you will need an accredited Bachelors degree in ing or Technology, or a Higher National Certificate (HNC) or Higher National Diploma (HND) in ing or Technology. Chartered To become a Chartered you will need an accredited Bachelors degree with honours in ing or Technology. Further relevant learning can lead to a Masters degree level, or an accredited integrated Master of ing (MEng) degree. 2

3 which career? which career? There are so many different careers in the engineering industry that there isn t the room to list them all here. However the following are examples of some of the most common job roles within electronic and electrical engineering. The following are some examples of jobs in mechanical and manufacturing engineering. MECHANICAL AND MANUFACTURING ENGINEERING ELECTRONIC AND ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING See map Routes into Electronic and Electrical ing in Kent and Medway Broadcast Broadcasting engineers install, maintain and repair the equipment used to make and broadcast radio and television programmes. See map Routes into Mechanical and Manufacturing ing in Kent and Medway ing Craft Machinist By using a range of tools, an engineering craft machinist makes precision engineered parts for all kinds of machinery, for example power station turbines and aircraft engines. Computer Computer engineers research, develop and manage hardware, software and interfacing and control applications/systems (for more detailed jobs like this see Routes into IT and Telecommunications in Kent and Medway). Fabricator A fabricator, also known as plater, cuts and shapes heavy sheet metal. This is then used to help build large structures such as tanks, oil rigs, power stations and the hulls of ships. Control and Instrument Electrical Electronics Lightning Conductor A control and instrument engineer designs, develops and manages the operation of equipment which is used to monitor and control a wide range of machinery in manufacturing industries. An electrical engineer researches, develops and operates heavy electrical machinery and equipment. This can include the machinery and equipment used to generate and distribute electricity. Electronic engineers research and develop a wide range of equipment and components that use low power electrical currents. Lightning conductor engineers install and maintain lightning conductors and electrical earthing systems on tall buildings and other tall structures. Manufacturing Systems Mechanical Mechanical ing Technician Manufacturing systems engineers design, plan, develop and control the manufacturing systems which convert raw materials into finished goods. Mechanical engineers design, construct, install and maintain mechanical machinery, systems, components and tools across a range of sectors, including manufacturing, construction, power, and transport. A mechanical engineering technician is responsible for the efficient working of many kinds of equipment and machinery. This may involve helping to design, test, install, adjust and maintain the equipment. Micro Electronics Micro electronics engineers research, design and develop a wide range of micro processors, micro controllers and digital systems. Service Service engineers maintain and repair equipment in different places such as factories, offices and people s homes. They can specialise in factory equipment, office equipment, domestic appliances or radio and TV equipment. Telecommunications Agricultural Telecommunications engineers plan and manage the installation and maintenance of telecommunication systems such as mobile telephone networks, satellite and digital television networks and computer networks with , internet access and shared databases (See the booklet 'Routes into IT and Telecommunications in Kent and Medway'). Agricultural engineers, sometimes called land-based engineers, plan, design, develop and install agricultural, horticultural and forestry machinery and equipment. Sheet Metal Worker Welder Sheet metal workers use thin sheet metal to make a range of articles such as vehicle panels, pipes, cylinders and boxes. Welders cut, shape and bond materials together to make products and components in a wide range of industries, such as construction and engineering, transport, aerospace, and offshore oil and gas. They also carry out repairs on manufacturing equipment and machinery. 4 5

AUTOMOTIVE ENGINEERING AND MOTOR VEHICLE See map Routes into Motor Vehicle and Automotive ing in Kent and Medway David The case studies in this booklet are fictional examples. 6 Automotive Automotive ing Technician Motor Mechanic/ Vehicle Technician Motorcycle Mechanic Vehicle Patrol Mechanic Vehicle Body Repairer Aerospace CAD Technician Computer Aided Design (CAD) Chartered Energy Construction Plant Mechanic Marine Mining Watch/Clock Repairer An automotive engineer designs, develops and produces all types of road and off-road vehicles, including cars, coaches, buses, trucks and tractors. Automotive engineering technicians work in manufacturing, and are involved in designing, producing, testing, inspecting and quality controlling vehicles and their parts. A motor mechanic, also known as a vehicle technician, services, repairs and tests cars, vans, buses or lorries. A motorcycle mechanic diagnoses faults, repairs, replaces parts and does routine services on different makes of motorcycles. A vehicle patrol mechanic checks vehicles at the roadside to find out why they have broken down. If possible they repair the problem at the roadside. A vehicle body repairer works on repairing and replacing body panels and damaged vehicle parts. Did you know you could be a? Below is a list of various jobs that you may, or may not, have heard about before! Many of them are taught as apprenticeships directly through employers, but you may need a degree for some of them. An aerospace engineer works on developing a range of aircraft and related technology. Technicians/draughtsmen work in all branches of engineering, architecture and construction to produce detailed 2D/D (two dimensional/three dimensional) designs and specifications on varied projects. A Chartered energy engineer works on the sourcing and production of oil and gas. Construction plant mechanics service and maintain the equipment used on construction sites, such as bulldozers, cranes and diggers. Marine engineers design, build, operate and maintain equipment and machinery in ships. A mining engineer designs, constructs and operates mine and quarry workings. A watch and clock repairer cleans, services and repairs watches and clocks. I d been interested in studying a motor vehicle course ever since doing some work experience in a garage when I was in year 10. I left school with 5 GCSEs so I decided to check out my local college to see what motor vehicle courses were available. I decided to do the IMI 2 Technical Certificate because it involved lots of practical work and I wasn't stuck in a classroom all the time.the course was only days a week so I started working at a garage on a Friday and Saturday to earn some extra money. I really enjoyed my job and the money I was earning so I thought about not staying on at college when I finished. My tutor told me about apprenticeships though and said that I could apply to do an advanced apprenticeship because of my qualifications and experience. My tutor spoke to my boss who agreed to take me on! I now work four days a week where I get to learn the practical side of the job, and then I m in college one day a week where I learn the theory to get my technical certificate. I finish my apprenticeship in a few months and can t wait to be fully qualified. 7

5 apprenticeships and diplomas apprenticeships and diplomas Apprenticeships What is an apprenticeship? Apprenticeships are work-based training programmes for people aged 16 and over who want to develop their prospects and career. An apprentice will get the opportunity to earn wages, gain qualifications and learn new knowledge and skills. Already, more than 10,000 employers offer apprenticeships. What do you learn on an apprenticeship? During an apprenticeship, people follow a training programme that is based on a framework developed by the relevant industry. The framework defines the content of learning and this will vary for each industry. However, all frameworks have elements in common: An appropriate work-based qualification such as a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) at either 2 or. Key Skills qualifications e.g. working in teams, problem-solving, communication and using new technology. A technical qualification such as a BTEC (Business and Technology Education Council) or City & Guilds (relevant to the specific Apprenticeship). Other qualifications or requirements as specified by the particular occupation. What subjects can you study? There are three levels of apprenticeship available for those people aged 16 and over who are not already in full-time education: 1. Apprenticeships (equivalent to five good GCSE passes) Apprentices work towards work-based learning qualifications such as an NVQ 2, Key Skills and, in some cases, a relevant knowledge-based qualification such as a BTEC. These provide the skills you need for your chosen career and allow entry to an Advanced Apprenticeship. 2. Advanced Apprenticeships (equivalent to two A-level passes) Advanced apprentices work towards work-based learning qualifications such as NVQ, Key Skills and, in most cases, a relevant knowledge based certificate such as a BTEC. To start this programme, you should ideally have five GCSEs (grade C or above) or have completed an Apprenticeship (see above).. Higher Apprenticeships Higher apprentices work towards work-based learning qualifications such as NVQ 4 and, in some cases, a knowledge-based qualification such as a Foundation degree. Diplomas are offered by a partnership of institutions which means that students undertaking the diploma will not spend all their time sitting at a desk in a classroom. Activities take place in school or college as well as with local employers or businesses. Diplomas can be studied at three levels: Foundation (equivalent to 5 GCSEs at grades D to G), Higher (equivalent to 7 GCSEs at grades A* to C) and Advanced (equivalent to.5 A levels). A Progression Diploma is also available which is the same as 2.5 A levels. From 2011 there will be an Extended Diploma on offer too. 6 case study 2 education levels Tony Qualification levels for routes into engineering 10 I d been predicted GCSEs at grades C and D in most subjects including maths and science and had absolutely no idea what I wanted to do! I really enjoyed technology at school though and was quite good at designing and making things. My careers advisor recommended I look at engineering and technology courses. After speaking to my local college, I decided that mechanical engineering was the one that sounded the most interesting to me. I started on the First Diploma in Mechanical ing and I enjoyed it so much that I chose to continue my studies the following year. I completed the BTEC National Diploma and because I was still studying something I enjoyed I got merits and distinctions all the way through. I knew I wanted to become an engineer by the time this course finished but I also wanted to earn some money! I applied for a job working for an engineering company and in the interview said that I would like to study part time at a higher level. I got the job and they allowed me to continue my studies one day a week. I have been working as an engineer for nearly two years now and am close to finishing my HNC in Mechanical ing. It s been great working and learning at the same time, and was definitely the right choice for me. My company has even offered to sponsor me to go to a local university and top up my qualification to a BEng (Hons).This means that in a few years time I can apply for Incorporated status! Not only will I have all the qualifications I need but I also will have four years of work experience.
