13 Enclosurs And Stup Building an Enclosur To work proprly, th walls of th nclosur must b rigid and not flx whn subjctd to high prssur gnratd by th spakr's opration. For optimum prformanc, w rcommnd using 3/4" MDF (Mdium Dnsity Fibrboard) and intrnal bracing. Th nclosur should b glud togthr along with support of scrws or nails. Bcaus MDF is porous, it is suggstd that you sal th outsid with polyurthan prior to painting or carpting. Calculating Volum Calculating is mrly a mattr of masuring th dimnsions in inchs, and using th following formula: Box Volum = (Hight) x (Width) x (Dpth) dividd by This will giv you th volum of th box in cubic ft. If two facing sids ar unvn lngth, add thm togthr, and divid by 2 to tak th avrag. Using this numbr will giv you th volum without th ncssity of calculating th box in sctions, and adding th sctions togthr. Th thicknss of th baffl matrial rducs th intrnal volum so this must b subtractd from th outsid dimnsions to dtrmin th intrnal volum. Th amount of air displacd by ach modl is listd on th spcifications sht in this manual and should also b subtractd from th gross volum calculation. All box paramtrs includ displacmnt for ports and subs. Ths spcs do not includ th volum of th matrial usd to build th box, so this must still b factord into th calculation. Subwoofr Crossovr Thr ar two oprational typs of crossovrs, passiv and activ. Passiv crossovrs (coils and conductors) ar placd on th spakr lads btwn th amplifir and th spakr. An activ crossovr is an lctronic filtr which sparats th audio signal fd to diffrnt amplifirs. For optimum subwoofr prformanc, w rcommnd using an activ Hz low pass crossovr at 12dB/octiv. 12

14 Troublshooting If you start having problms with distortd sound or loss prformanc aftr installing your subs, you can follow th instructions blow to try and locat what is causing th problm. 1) If you hav any distortd sound, loss of prformanc, or rattling from your subs, chck th connctions running from your amplifir or othr procssor to th box. You will also want to chck th connctions insid th box to mak sur no wirs hav bcom unhookd or ar loos. 2) If th abov dos not solv th problm, chck your nclosur thoroughly to s if thr ar any laks, cracks, or brokn pics. Any loss of structural intgrity of your nclosur can caus significant prformanc loss and distortion. 3) Th nxt stp you can tak is to rmov th subs and look for any burnd wir lads or sparatd componnts. You can normally smll somthing burning whn a sub blows or is going bad. Somtims whn you play subs to hard for too long, thy will start to hat up. 4) If non of th abov stps solv th problm, you will want to start looking at th othr componnts in th vhicl. Start by chcking all connctions to and from th box, amplifir, sourc unit, or any othr procssors you may b using. You will nd to rfrnc to that particular manufacturr for any stting configurations or troublshooting. 13
