County Scrapheap Challenge Competition A team from 29 th Pondtail represented the district at the county competition in Romsey a few weeks ago. Luke, Ollie, Ely, Oliver and Max had to build a model based on the story of The Lighthouse Keeper s Lunch. There was a tremendous amount of thought and detail that went into the model and the boys worked really well as a team and had a great time. It was a very close result with only one point between the top 3 teams, Odiham coming 3 rd out of all the teams that took part. Well done! 2 New Chieftains Explorer Scout Unit Ancells Farm Community Centre, Ancells Farm, on Fridays, pm One of the great successes of Odiham District Scout Group can be measured in terms of the number of young people wanting to stay in Scouting after the age of 14, and move on to Explorers. So successful has this been the Explorer Unit based at Basingbourne Woods has recently seen numbers swell to bursting. I have been an ACSL at 6th Fleet for over five years and felt I was ready for a new challenge, and ready to work with older members of the Scouting movement. As the prospect of a new Explorer Unit began to take shape I saw that working with 14 to 18 year olds could be my new role and so volunteered to lead the new Unit. Both David Tyler (6th Fleet Scout Leader) and Jakki Holland (our DC) have been very busy in leading activities to set up the new Unit, and we already have an able assistant in the shape of Louise Greenwood, an Explorer leader who is joining us from another District, plus the likelihood of a second assistant in due course. We have our inaugural meeting on the 18th January 2013 wish us luck! Kate Sutton New 101 st Odiham (Zebon Copse, Church Crookham) Zebon Copse Community Centre, Zebon Copse, Church Crookham, on Friday evenings. In the words of the Hampshire County Commissioner: 101st Odiham - a whole new Group - on the biggest investiture I've ever seen - 18 Beavers, 19 Cubs, 8 Scouts, 2 Young Leaders and 10 Adults. This new Group in Church Crookham is giving so many young people who were stuck on the waiting list the chance to enjoy the adventure of Scouting. Congratulations especially to Ed and Izzy, the two YLs who led the ceremony, and to Vanessa (County Development Officer) and JakkI (DC) for an immense of work in the background to establish the Group. 4 1 st Crookham's Shelterbox Put To Good Use! Some of you may remember that last year 1 st Crookham did a sponsored 10 mile hike and overnight camp in aid of the disaster relief charity Shelterbox. The challenge was undertaken by 25 Scouts from both troops, who all managed to complete the 10 miles despite some glum faces early on, and collectively managed to raise with their efforts. Our objective was to fully fund a complete Shelterbox ( 590) and with a little to spare enough for an additional empty box. I ve now received a notice from Shelterbox that our box was deployed in September this year to disaster relief in Pakistan: Torrential monsoon rains in Pakistan over the past few weeks have left tens of thousands of people homeless in the provinces of Balochistan, Punjab and Sindh, according to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA). ShelterBox has been distributing emergency shelter using prepositioned stocks in Islamabad to families affected in these provinces through the National Rural Support Programme (NRSP), a not-for-profit organisation in the South Asian country. 'Through this partnership and thanks to our supporters we've been able to deliver our disaster relief tents rapidly to hundreds of flood survivors in Rajanpur, Dera Ghazi Khan and Rahim Yar Khan so far Over the past two years Pakistan has suffered devastating floods, which affected around eight million people in 2011 and an estimated 20 million the year before as well as large-scale structural damage over both years Further details here: Mark Medler The Newsletter of Odiham Scout District, page 4
