Abstract Descriptions Everyday Geodetics Samuel Knight Blue Marble Geographics Hallowell, ME Attendee Level: Beginner Program track: Society Presentation format: Single presentation Abstract text: Geodetic accuracy and integrity is one of those basic assumptions in most mapping projects. It is easy to forget the number of distortions and simplifications that might be endemic to a map because of the choices the cartographer has made. These may not affect the quality of the map, just the nature of measurements that will be made from it. We look at a map in which all the data overlays nicely, and because everything lines up, it is assumed to be accurate but choices we make in the selection of projections, datums, and transformations have a significant impact on measurements and analysis made from it. Measurements of distance, angles, areas, and direction all come with often overlooked caveats on a map. Often, we ignore the geodetic context of the map data we are working with and new users with little formal training/education in geography can easily fall victim to bad assumptions. This presentation will delve into the basic principles of geodesy, from the effects of projections on measurements, to accuracy implications when transforming data between coordinate systems.
Using and Supporting the California Geodetic Control Network Bruce Joffe, GISP GIS Consultants Piedmont, CA Second Presenter Reg Parks Santa Rosa Junior College Santa Rosa, CA Presentation format: Full complete session Abstract text: GIS database themes are supposed to be linked to geodetic control so that all layers align. How does the geodetic control network work? How do GPS measurements register with California's geodetic control network? A collaborative work group of surveyors, geodesists and GIS professionals explain in this panel presentation. Learning Objective #1 * Understand the need for geodetic control, one of seven FGDC Framework Data Themes, in aligning GIS database thematic layers. Learning Objective #2 * Understand how surveyors use CGPS geodetic control stations to determine location of mapped features for GIS databases. Learning Objective #3: *Understand California's CGPS geodetic control network (the California Spatial Reference Network), how it was built and prospects for its ongoing utility. There are important lessons that are relevant to every state's geodetic control network. Case Studies - what case studies will be presented - if any? Research - what research will be cited - if any? Skills * - What information and skills will people take home? Better understanding of geodetic control, how Continuous GPS (CGPS) works, and how GIS professionals and Surveyors can collaborate on issues of mutual concern. Outline of Session * GIS Need for Geodetic Control What it is How it affects GIS layers Who maintains it in California? Observing GPS Background of CA geodetic control California GPS Real Time Networks Registering GPS with CSRN (CRTN) Monumentation What makes CA unique?
CSRN/CRTN The Present and Future of CSRN CSRC Background & Goals Current Funding Future Goals Geodetic Control for GIS Why is it important? What s in it for Land Surveyor s? What s in it for GIS Professionals?
URISA 2014 Panel Discussion: Needed GIS/Survey Cooperation, New Opportunities Peirce Eichelberger gdbms, Inc Collegeville, PA Second Presenter Peter Borbas, PLS, AICP Borbas Surveying and Mapping Boonton, NJ Presentation format: Full complete session Abstract text: This panel discussion will include both surveyors and GIS staff. The focus of the panel will be on new opportunities for the GIS and survey communities to work together for the benefit of both professions. The panelists will share their perspectives on some of the following: Control and Why It Is So Important Horizontal and Vertical control, understanding the geoid and the ellipsoid Long term coordinate usage and datum shifts NAD27/83 and the next Imagery role in control and what we need to know about it? New developments/new plats Z Coordinates/Floodplains/Katrina/Sandy Coastal lessons and case studies Getting better Z into GIS As-builts and Z, infrastructure and buildings The Revolution That Is GPS Surveying versus finding things GIS staff using GPS Coordinates from the public Real-time as-builts, real time geo-location activities Better Legal Descriptions Needed Now and Why? Why surveyors are needed for better legal descriptions Role of GIS GIS/Surveyors vis-ã -vis the larger title community Objectives for this panel session will be to give GIS staff a broader perspective about surveying and surveyors. For surveyors this session should provide a bigger context for their role vis-ã -vis GIS lifecycle issues. Interested audience should be any GIS staff, survey community, GIS users, IT, consumers of GIS, etc. Learning Objective 1: Educate GIS staff about the importance of Surveyors and their role. Learning Objective 2: Give surveyors a broader perspective of GIS profession.
Case Studies: Super Storm Sandy examples, RR examples. Research: New floodplain maps for New Jersey. Skills: See abstract Outline of Session: See abstract of session.
