3 High-Impact Literacy Instruction: Shifting Into High Gear to Meet the Challenges of the Common Core The ELA and Literacy Common Core State Standards lay out the what and the why, but they do not address the how. Bring your team to collaborate on a plan for the how in your school. The Common Core State Standards are not just new criteria for education, but a new way of teaching and learning that calls for literacy to be a shared responsibility across all disciplines within a school. With special attention to text complexity and nonfiction writing, this institute focuses on effective reading and writing strategies for classroom teachers. Engage with experts in a rich, interactive learning environment and collaborate with colleagues on personalized action plans for implementation in your own classrooms, using your own content. Small group breakout sessions include: Connecting the Dots: Academic Language, English Language Learners, and the Common Core Standards Prove It! Elements of Argumentative Writing 6 12 The Challenge of Challenging Texts: Effective Strategies and Activities for the CCSS Classroom Literacy Across the Curriculum: Yes, We Can! Instructional Coaching: Leadership that Leads with Literacy CEU s and Graduate Credits At the conclusion of the event, you will receive a certificate of completion which lists the hours completed at the event. You may use these hours to obtain Continuing Education Unit s (CEU s) through your state Department of Education. You may register for graduate level credit through Brandman University. Register for this credit here: What attendees have to say about their experience at this institute: Tons of information! I gained great ideas and tips to share with my teachers. I would advise them to attend future events if at all possible. This was one of the most informative conferences I have attended. I will definitely take information back to the teachers in my building. An awesome experience! You must attend! For complete details or to register, visit leadandlearn.com/conferences Questions? 4 Agenda Day 1 December 10, :00 am Registration and Continental Breakfast (provided) 8:00 am Literacy Instruction: Scientific Evidence as the Base for Our Critical Profession Dr. David Chard 9:30 am Maximizing Your Learning Experience Kendra Smith 9:40 am Break 10:00 am Breakout Sessions Writing for the Next Generation Assessments: Help Needed! Lisa Cebelak With the Next Generation Assessments being officially administered in the academic year, educators are looking for ways to prepare for these assessments. One area of concern in ELA and Literacy is performance tasks. This session will deconstruct a task and emphasize how to tackle the writing through the use of rubrics that focus on proficiency. Come see how to incorporate this kind of assessment task in your classroom for real world relevancy! Prove It! Elements of Argumentative Writing 6 12 Juan Córdova The Common Core State Standards place particular emphasis on argumentative writing in Grades 6 12 in all content areas, but what makes an argument effective? In addition to relevant, sufficient evidence and proof, argumentation requires other essential components. Participants will explore these components, experiencing the same argumentative writing process as their students. Looking Closely at Close Reading Jack Umstatter The Common Core State Standards ask teachers to create more time and space and support in the curriculum for close reading. Exactly what constitutes close reading? How do the CCSS Reading Standards impact close reading? Which research based strategies and practices can be implemented within classrooms to work most effectively for students? This interactive session will help to answer these and other close reading questions and concerns. 11:15 am Lunch (provided) 12:15 pm Breakout Sessions 1:30 pm Break Writing for the Next Generation Assessments: Help Needed! Lisa Cebelak Prove It! Elements of Argumentative Writing 6 12 Juan Córdova Looking Closely at Close Reading Jack Umstatter 1:45 pm Breakout Sessions Literacy Across the Curriculum: Yes, We Can! Lisa Cebelak The Common Core State Standards insist that all educators are teachers of reading and writing. But how does a school start or restart reading and writing across the curriculum when efforts in the past have failed? This session will focus on ELA and Literacy standards and note key similaries across the content areas. By focusing on the standards, educators will be able to facilitate vertical and horizontal discussions to keep literacy a top priority. This session will also include key literacy strategies that can be incorporated in the classroom immediately. All Details are Not Created Equal: Opinion Writing in Grades K 5 Juan Córdova Effective writing at any grade level incorporates the six traits of writing. While all traits are important in writing an opinion, the trait of Ideas is foundational: students must support their opinions with relevant details. This session will focus on the trait of Ideas while considering how the other traits are integral in writing an effective opinion. The Challenge of Challenging Texts: Effective Strategies and Activities for the CCSS Classroom Jack Umstatter In today s Common Core classroom environment, students must engage in complex readings. A purposeful, text centered approach should include research grounded, high impact strategies to assist students in reading both literary and informational texts. In this session, participants will review and practice these strategies as they explore effective methods to support their learners in this important and demanding literacy experience. 3:00 pm Closing and Evaluations

5 Day 2 December 11, :00 am Continental Breakfast (provided) 8:00 am Making Content Comprehensible for English Learners: What We Know from Research and Best Practice Dr. MaryEllen Vogt 9:30 am Maximizing Your Learning Experience Kendra Smith 9:40 am Break 10:00 am Breakout Sessions Literacy Across the Curriculum: Yes, We Can! Lisa Cebelak (repeat from December10th afternoon breakout sessions) All Details are Not Created Equal: Opinion Writing in Grades K 5 Juan Córdova (repeat from December10th afternoon breakout sessions) The Challenge of Challenging Texts: Effective Strategies and Activities for the CCSS Calssroom Jack Umstatter (repeat from December10th afternoon breakout sessions) 11:15 am Lunch (provided) 12:15 pm Breakout Sessions Instructional Coaching: Leadership that Leads with Literacy Lisa Cebelak How do adminstrators and others in leadership positions work to change the culture of a school to prioritize literacy as the key ingredient for student growth? This session will discuss the need to redefine literacy to include the characteristics of what it means to be college and career ready. When all educators understand the importance of literacy, the what and why, they are better prepared to tackle the how. Participants will leave with tools to get started, from ideas to incorporate into staff meetings to look fors in walk throughs. 1:30 pm Break Connecting the Dots: Academic Language, English Language Learners, and the Common Core State Standards Juan Córdova Acquiring and using academic language is challenging for English Language Learners, so systematic and consistent instruction in academic vocabulary is crucial. Analyzing the Common Core Standards for academic language and then connecting the analysis to language functions and patterns allows teachers to strengthen opportunities for ELL students. Literacy Coaching: Making Every Classroom Minute Count Jack Umstatter The Common Core State Standards impact the role, strategies, and expectations of the Instructional Coach. Yet, the coach s primary goal, to improve literacy instruction, remains the same. During this session, participants will review best practices for both impactful literacy coaching and increased student achievement. Authentic examples of CCSS literacy coaching scenarios will be presented and discussed. 1:45 pm Breakout Sessions Instructional Coaching: Leadership that Leads with Literacy Lisa Cebelak Connecting the Dots: Academic Language, English Language Learners, and the Common Core State Standards Juan Córdova Literacy Coaching: Making Every Classroom Minute Count Jack Umstatter 3:00 pm Closing and Evaluations
