1 Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care (CHC30113) 2015 Course Information This nationally recognized qualification is from the Community Services Training Package CHC08 and reflects the roles of workers in a range of early childhood education settings who support the implementation of an approved learning framework and children s wellbeing, learning and development. Certificate III qualified educators may work under direct supervision or autonomously, depending on the setting. TWNH is the Registered Training Organisation delivering the accredited training course. TWNH has a strong commitment to high quality provision of Early Childhood Services in their varied Children s Programs including it s Occasional Care program and this commitment is also reflected in our training of future Early Childhood Educators. 18 units must be completed for this qualification including 15 core units and 3 electives. TWNH s course includes the following units: Unit Code Unit Name Core/ Elective CHCCS400C Work within a relevant legal and ethical framework C CHCECE001 Develop cultural competence C CHCECE002 Ensure the health and safety of children C CHCECE003 Provide care for children C CHCECE004 Promote and provide healthy food and drinks C CHCECE005 Provide care for babies and toddlers C CHCECE007 Develop positive and respectful relationships with children C CHCECE009 Use an approved learning framework to guide practice C CHCECE010 Support the holistic development of children in early childhood C CHCECE011 Provide experiences to support children s play and learning C CHCECE013 Use information about children to inform practice C
2 CHCPRT001 Identify and respond to children and young people at risk C HLTAID004 Provide an emergency first aid response in an education and care setting (Delivered by an external Provider on TWNH site and including as bonus Certificates 22024VIC Emergency Management of Asthma in the Workplace and 22099VIC Course in First Aid Management of Anaphylaxis) C HLTWHS001 Participate in workplace health and safety C HLTHIR404D Work effectively with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people C CHCECE012 Support children to connect with their world E CHCORG303C Participate effectively in the work environment E HLTHIR403C Work effectively with culturally diverse clients and co-workers E Course Delivery TWNH offers a course during the daytime with a maximum of 14 students in each class. The course consists of: 270 hours of face-to-face class time consisting of 54 sessions of 5 hours (Delivery sessions for HLTAID004 may require your attendance for 6 hours per day to be confirmed) 388 hours of independent learning and support through a Class Wiki. 160 hours of industry placements - First placement of 80 hours is with the age group 0-2 years and is formally assessed. - First placement of 80 hours is with the age group 3-5 years and is formally assessed In addition TWNH provides a supporting pre-accredited Employment and Study Support Program which will support students to develop effective study skills, obtain Police and Working with Children Checks, prepare for Placements, create CVs for Early Childhood related employment, develop or strengthen computer skills, join and use the class Wiki and practice interview skills. Student Resources TWNH s course will utilize the Smallprint unit specific resources which students will need to purchase. For those electing to purchase this from TWNH there will be a charge of $255. Other resources such as Placement Manuals and other handouts will be provided at no cost. Students are also asked to bring writing materials and a USB stick for their own use. Assessment Assessment will be conducted in line with the Training Package s requirements and will be through a range of written assignments (to assess your knowledge and understanding of relevant theory and regulations) AND the successful completion of Practical Placements (to assess your ability to apply essential knowledge and skills in the workplace).
3 Students who successfully complete all units will be issued with a full Certificate. Students who successfully complete some units will be issued with a Statement of Attainment in recognition of partial completion. Course Pre-requisites There are no formal pre-requisites however prospective students should have: an interest in the welfare and education of children the ability to obtain a satisfactory Working With Children Check (WWCC) and Police Check an appropriate language, literacy and numeracy (LLN) skills level, or the ability to be supported to achieve these during the course. Prior to course place offers students will be required to undertake a LLN Assessment. A commitment to attending all course requirements including undertaking Placements. Placements Students will be required to undertake two assessed 80 hour industry placements during the course in addition to class hours. TWNH has arrangements with a number of Early Childhood Centres for placements in Thornbury, Northcote and Alphington. If would prefer to undertake your placements elsewhere we are happy to support you in this. Employment and Further Study Pathways On successful completion graduates can gain employment within a range of Early Childhood Services including: Long Day Care (zero to six years) Occasional Care (zero to six years) Family Day Care, and Kindergartens. Graduates may also elect to undertake further study at a range of other providers including: CHC40113 Certificate IV in School Age Education and Care CHC50113 Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care CHC50213 Diploma of School Age Education and Care Course Venue, Dates and Times Cert III Early Childhood Education & Care (CHC30113) Classes will be held in our 131 Shaftesbury Parade Training Room and/or our 99 Leinster Grove Training Room. Both venues are in Thornbury and within easy walking distance of each other. Class will be held on Mondays & Thursdays for 27 weeks 9.30am 3.00pm as follows:
4 Term 2 (11 weeks) Term 3 (10 weeks) Term 4 (6 weeks) April 13, 16, 20, 23, 27, 30 May 04, 07, 11, 14, 18, 21, 25, 28 June 01, 04, 11, 15, 18, 22, 25 June (no class 08 June) July 13, 16, 20, 23, 27, 30 August 03, 06, 10, 13, 17, 20, 24, 27, 31 September 03, 07, 10, 14, 17 October 05, 08, 12, 15, 19, 22, 26, 29 November 02, 05, 09, 12 Employment and Study Support Program Classes will be held in our 99 Leinster Grove Training Room, Thornbury on Tuesdays for 10 weeks 9.30am pm as follows: Term 1 April 14, 21, 28 May 05, 12, 19, 26 June 02, 09, 16 Centrelink Approval TWNH s Certificate III Early Childhood & Education course is recognised by Centrelink as a full-time workload for 31 weeks (including holidays). Course Fees TWNH offers both government subsidized places for those eligible for the Victorian Training Guarantee (VTG) and fee-for-service places. To see whether you are eligible for a subsidised training place through the Victorian and Commonwealth Governments please see our separate Government Subsidised Training fact sheet. VTG eligible (non concession) This training is delivered with Victorian & Commonwealth Government funding of approximately $3,990 for an eligible individual. The student fees as published are subject to change given individual circumstances at enrolment. Tuition $2.50ph x 818 hrs $ 2, Amenities 270 hrs x 35c ph Total $2, VTG eligible (concession) This training is delivered with Victorian & Commonwealth Government funding of approximately $5, for an eligible individual. 5 Fee for Service Tuition $7.50ph x 818 hrs $6, Amenities 270 hours x 35c ph Total $6, Students will also be required to obtain a Working with Children Check and a Police Check prior to undertaking Placements. The cost for these is anticipated to be $43.70 for a Police Check and $ for a Working with Children Check. Fees for the Employment Study and Support Program will be waived for those undertaking the Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care. Fees Help TWNH has a No Interest Loans Scheme for people who have a health care card. These loans may be used for accredited training costs. If you wish to apply for a NILS loan you will need to make a separate appointment with the TWNH NILS Co-ordinator, on or via nilscoordinator@twnh.vic.edu.au. Childcare For prospective students with children under the age of 6 TWNH offers an on-site occasional childcare program at 131 Shaftesbury Parade, Thornbury for which additional fees apply. Strictly limited childcare places, subsidized by ACFE, are available for those who meet eligibility requirements.
