All ALI programs require students to be at least 18 years of age or high school graduates.

It is situated in Los Angeles County, about 20 miles (32 km) south of downtown Los Angeles. Long Beach is the fifth-largest city in California and second largest city within the Los Angeles area with 492,682 inhabitants. An international experience is always worth it, but there s nothing better when you re able to combine a nice place to live with the professionalism of a good Institute. 6 Intensive English Program Why should you enroll in the Intensive English Program? TOEFL waiver for entrance to CSULB undergraduate and graduate degree programs TOEFL waiver for entrance to partner community colleges study at a U.S. college or 13 weeks summer university 16 weeks fall 16 weeks spring at the college/university level. The program is offered every Spring, Summer and Fall term. A placement test given during new student orientation determines the level in which students are placed. Students may begin in any term and continue year-round. Beginning to advanced English learners are welcome. University Credit Courses Students in 5 and 6 of the IEP program may take 1 to 2 CSULB university credit courses through Open University. Students in s 5 and 6, taking Open University courses in the Fall and Spring, add an additional week of studies for final exams. They always encourage students to push forward, not only with study but also daily. The classes are great. The class quality is the best I ve experienced. 8 PRACTICAL ENGLISH Program 3 weeks summer The Practical English (PE) Program, available in July and August, is designed to improve students conversational English. Each session includes 15 hours of English instruction per week plus field trips and activities. At the end of each program, students may enroll in the following IEP term. Global Logistics Specialist (GLS) courses Intensive English Courses ALI electives or CSULB credit courses through Open University Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) This program is designed to prepare students to be English Instructors in a variety of settings around the world. Housing options available International requirements: TOEFL (ibt) 71, IELTS 6.0, or TOEIC 700 F-1 student visa Tuition = $2,800 $3,200 University Credit Programs University Study at the Beach (USB) The University Study at the Beach program provides international students the opportunity to study abroad at California State University, Long Beach. 1 2 semester program Enroll in 9 (graduate minimum) to 12 (undergraduate minimum) course credit units through Open University TOEFL 61 or IELTS 5.5 is required Credits earned may be transferrable to other universities No long admission process!

9 Student Services Assistance in applying to CSULB The American Language Institute provides advisement and support services for students interested in applying to a U.S. college or university. The ALI also provides CSULB application workshops every term to make the transition into a CSULB degree program as smooth as possible. ALI TOEFL Wavier Undergraduates Successful completion of 4 of the Intensive English Program fulfills English Language admission requirements for a CSULB undergraduate degree program or partnering institution without taking the TOEFL. Graduates Successful completion of 6 of the Intensive English Program fulfills English Language admission requirements for most CSULB graduate degree programs without taking the TOEFL. 1 Foundation Conditional Admission Students seeking conditional admission must apply online at Supporting international application documents and online application confirmation page must be mailed to the ALI. It is also necessary to apply to the Intensive English Program or already be attending the ALI during this time. Fall Entry 1st Day to Apply Online Online Application Deadline Deadline for Supporting Documents to ALI Undergraduate / Transfer October 1 November 30 February 15 Graduate October 1 April 1 April 15 Please check for Spring entry availability. A CSULB university Preliminary Evaluation of transcripts is also available through the American Language Institute from December 1 August 15th. This service is for students who wish to apply to CSULB in the near future and want to know if they are academically eligible. Please contact our office for more details. Housing The American Language Institute (ALI) recommends you make your housing arrangements in advance. If you would like the ALI staff to arrange your housing before leaving for the United States, you may choose from the following options: CSULB on-campus and off-campus dormitories Oakwood apartments Homestay Temporary housing ALI Activities Students in all American Language Institute programs have the opportunity to participate in and attend afterschool activities such as: Long Beach tours Professional sporting events Ice cream socials Movies Beach parties Holiday parties

10 How to Apply to the American Language Institute Submit: 1. American Language Institute Application Form May be filled out by hand or online at / ali. 2. American Language Institute Payments Acceptable forms of payment include personal check drawn on a U.S. bank account, money order, cashier s check, bank check, or Visa/MasterCard online at csulb.edu/ali. Please check with our office for wire transfer information. Filing Dates If you are applying from outside the United States and wish to obtain an F-1 visa, your application should be submitted to our offices at least 45 days prior to the first day of orientation. Transfer students may submit their application and transfer documents up to 7 days before orientation. Transfer Verification Form Transfer Students Only Students who are transferring from another school must have their current school fill out a Transfer Verification Form and submit it with their application. The transfer form can be found at / ALI / Documents / spdocuments /Documents_ Transfer_Form_Revised.pdf. A. $150 Application Fee Includes processing and express mail fees. B. Full Tuition Payment Your tuition payment must be paid before the I-20 can be issued. If the F-1 student visa is denied by the U.S. embassy or consulate, please contact the ALI as soon as possible. 3. Financial Documents Submit a bank statement (less than 6 months old) with a minimum balance of $9,400 U.S. dollars or equivalent convertible currency. If statement is a time deposit account, it must show that money can be withdrawn without penalty. Other acceptable documents include your or your sponsor s bank statement or government financial guarantee. ALI Staff 4. 11 Mission Statement The mission of the American Language Institute (ALI) is to provide quality English as a Second Language instruction that meets the high educational standards of its affiliate campus, California State University, Long Beach (CSULB). As a unit within College of Continuing and Professional Education, the self-support division on campus, the American Language Institute responds to the needs of a variety of audiences. As such, the American Language Institute includes long-term and short-term programs, credit and non-credit courses, as well as support services and activities appropriate for its different clients. A large part of the efforts within the institute focuses on the Intensive English Program (IEP), which offers academic and practical ESL instruction to a post-secondary audience. The IEP administrators, faculty and staff endeavor to maximize learning and successfully prepare students for studies at U.S. colleges and universities. Every effort is made to provide effective support services and facilitate student use of campus and community resources.
