1 Graduate School of International Administration Admission Guideline Josai International University (JIU) April, 2014 This Admission Guideline covers the following topics: INTRODUCTION ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS SCREENING PROCESS APPLICATION SCHEDULE DOCUMENT LISTS FEES MAILING ADDRESS OF APPLICATION FINANCIAL AID INTRODUCTION The Graduate School of International Administration educates students to become global-minded professionals with the understanding and coping skills to solve global issues that impact on, or result from the relationship among governments, businesses, and non-governmental organizations in the 21 st century. This admission guideline will help you complete the application procedures. Approximately 25 students are admitted to the program per year and courses are available in either Japanese or English. 1

2 ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS Applicants must meet one of each educational and language proficiency requirements. Educational Requirements (either a or b) a) The completion of at least 16 years of mandatory education including a Bachelor's degree. b) If an applicant has less than 16 years of mandatory education and is over 22 years old with one of the following conditions, she/ he may be qualified to apply. Completed extra years of tertiary-level education or research, and preferably obtained outstanding academic achievements at the standard accepted by the JIU Admissions Assessment Committee. Sufficient work experience as a researcher or an instructor at an academic institution, or a specialist in a company of the fields relevant to this Master s program. Language Proficiency Requirements (either a or one from b) a) For a non-native Japanese speaker who chooses to study in Japanese. At least grade N2 in the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) A score of at least 220 in The Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU) b) For a non-native English speaker who chooses to study in English. TOEFL ibt 80 / PBT 550 IELTS (Academic) 6.5 TOEIC The applicants latest test score must be within 2 years prior to the application date. If any one of the above conditions cannot be met, an applicant must undertake the pre-assessment test/ process before applying for the program. 3 ASSESSMENT PROCESS Assessment is conducted as shown below. JIU Admissions Office may contact the applicant's academic institutions to ensure the credibility of information provided, or request additional documents regarding academic background, transcripts and language proficiency. 1. Assessment process for working professionals (a) Document assessment (b) Interview There is a one-year completion program available. The assessment takes place upon receipt of the documents. If an applicant is not qualified to take the one-year program, s/he may be accepted on the regular two- year program. 3

4 APPLICATION SCHEDULE Important notes: * All the application documents must reach the Admissions Office by the application deadline. ** Both successful and unsuccessful applicants will be informed of the result by mail within one week after this date. *** Applicants must complete all the entry procedures including payment of entry fees by this date. Failure to meet the deadline may cause the cancellation of an applicant s admission unless she/he has requested special permission to postpone the procedure for valid reasons. 5 DOCUMENT LISTS Important notes: 1. Application documents submitted cannot be returned under any circumstances. Original certificates may be returned if a written request is included together with the application documents. 2. The contents of the application documents cannot be changed after their submission. 3. Any falsified documents will result in the cancelling of an application. 1 Document Application Form (designated PDF form) Description The application form must be filled out by the applicant. The photo should be 4cm x 3cm without frame, and must be taken within 3 months prior to the application. Please complete the form in the language you have indicated in the application form on page 1. 2 Receipt of Application Fee (Must be paid before submitting application documents) 35,000 yen 10,000 yen (Foreign applicants residing overseas only) Please follow the payment method explained in the Application Fee section below. 3 Admission Essay (designated PDF form) For working professionals who are not currently enrolled in an educational institution, we request you to write an essay on a recent news item relevant to the field of study you plan to pursue at JIU. 4 Original Physical Examination Certificate (designated PDF form) 5 5 Original Letters of Recommendation (2 designated PDF forms) One Letter of Recommendation must be from the applicant s supervisor at university. The other can be from a university professor, a language school teacher or an employer. Applicants should submit letters written, signed and sealed by the referees, and mail together with the application documents. The recommendation letters and all the required

6 certificates must be translated if the language used isn t Japanese or English. 6 Original college or university graduation certificate(s) Copies cannot be accepted. 7 Original academic transcripts from college or university Copies cannot be accepted. If transcripts are not written in Japanese or English, certified translations must be submitted. Transcripts from all undergraduate or graduate schools attended, or schools transferred from or to must be submitted. The transcript should show all the grades from the schools attended. In addition to above: For foreign applicants living overseas 6 10 Application for Certificate of Eligibility/COE (designated PDF form) In order to enter Japan as a university student, an applicant must submit an application for COE designated by the Immigration Bureau of Ministry of Justice of Japan. JIU will submit the COE application to the Immigration Bureau on behalf of the applicant. After the official COE is issued and mailed to the applicant, the applicant must apply for a Student Visa at the

International students who do not receive any financial aid such as a tuition waiver or a scholarship upon application and study at JIU under a student visa will be given a 30 percent tuition discount. 2. Any bank transfer fees must be met by the student when paying tuition fees via an international bank. 3. Total fees for graduate students who complete the program within 1 year is 800,000 yen. 10

12 FINANCIAL AID Students can apply for the following financial aids after being accepted to JIU. 1. Mizuta Scholarship Program (a scholarship of 150,000 yen per person is granted to outstanding students) Mizuta Scholarship is awarded to one graduate student, who holds the highest GPA, from each department. This scholarship was named after Mikio Mizuta, the founder of Josai University Educational Corporation, to commemorate his legacy. 2. Female Leadership Scholarship/ Noriko Mizuta Scholarship (Up to 300,000 yen tuition discount) Female Leadership Scholarship is aimed at cultivating leadership skills in female students who can play an active role globally and deal with issues in the modern society. 3. Teaching Apprenticeship Tuition Reduction/ Exemption Program (Partial tuition discount) Teaching Apprenticeship is a program designed for graduate students who plan to pursue a career in teaching. This is a program where graduate students assist faculty members in undergraduate classes.) 4. Teaching Assistant Program (a 30 % waiver on tuition) Teaching assistantships (TA) are available for some courses. A partial tuition waiver is given to the selected TAs. Applicants must submit their resume or curriculum vitae (CV) that shows work experience and personal achievements. 5. Work Study Program (WSP) (On-campus employment) Graduate students have a chance to work for administrative positions. Tuition Discount for International Students (30 % tuition discount) International students who do not receive any other types of scholarships upon entrance will be given a 30 percent discount on their tuition.
