11 University & College Study in the U.S.A. Your Gateway to UCR The California Postsecondary Education System The California postsecondary education system consists of a full range of public and private schools. The University of California System (UC) The top State research university is the University of California, which consists of 10 campuses including Berkeley, Davis, Irvine, Los Angeles, Merced, Riverside, San Diego, San Francisco, Santa Barbara and Santa Cruz, and is considered the world s finest public university system. The UC system offers access to students from the top 12.5% of California high school graduates and provides most graduate studies and research. The California State University System (CSU) The CSU is the largest university system in the U.S. and is intended for the top one-third of California high school students. The CSU system consists of 23 campuses. The universities within the CSU are primarily for undergraduate education, although many of the larger campuses offer master s degrees and since 2007, the CSU is authorized to award doctorall degrees in Education (Ed.D.). The California Community College System The California Community College System has 109 campuses and provides first- and second-year courses only, leading to Associate of Arts or Associate of Science Degrees. Students can then transfer to the CSU or UC system to complete their third and fourth years and receive their bachelor s degree. Private Education California has hundreds of private colleges and universities, including many religious and specialpurpose institutions. Accreditation Accreditation is a certification of the academic quality of an institution of higher learning. The Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) is responsible for the accreditation of public and private universities and colleges in California. Applying for Undergraduate Admission It is difficult for international students to enter the University of California, Riverside, as first-year undergraduate students. Students must have exceptional high school grades, meet the language requirement and have successfully completed the SAT exams before graduating from their home country. Most undergraduate students attend a California community college for the first two years and then transfer to the UC or CSU systems, or to another college or university for degree completion. There are many advantages of studying in the community college system for the first two years. The programs and courses are of high quality. The entrance requirements are lower and students are not required to take the SAT exams. Courses can easily be transferred to the UC or CSU system or to any university in the U.S. Courses are also less expensive in the community colleges than at a UC or CSU. Applying for Graduate Programs Admission to graduate programs at the University of California, Riverside, is highly competitive. Students must meet strict admission requirements and since the number of qualified applicants may exceed the number of places available, many wellqualified candidates may not be admitted. University and College Advising Services The UC Riverside International Education Programs provides information and advising services to IEP students wishing to pursue undergraduate or graduate study at any institution in the U.S. There is no additional charge for these services. IEP also organizes a university and college fair each session where local and pathway partner institutions are invited to talk about their academic programs. Your Gateway to UCR Students enrolled in the UCR English language programs now have several opportunities to further their studies at UCR at the undergraduate level. 13 UCR International Transfer Track (UCR-ITT) Your Gateway to UCR Do you want to... Graduate with an undergraduate degree from UCR? Prepare for UCR study through a recognized and respected California institution? Enjoy smaller classes which will help you become a successful UCR student? Significantly reduce your fees for the first two years of study? The academic requirements to enter UCR directly are very high. In California, only the top 12.5% of high school graduates are eligible for direct entry. UCR also has very high SAT and TOEFL requirements. UCR is about quality, but it is also about access. International high school graduates who would like to graduate from UCR but who do not meet the high academic requirements of the University of California, still have the opportunity to earn a UCR bachelor s degree by enrolling in the UCR-International Transfer Track Program. The UCR-ITT program is a cooperative program between UCR and select California community colleges. California Community Colleges are highly regarded and provide you with smaller class sizes and individual attention. They are your best opportunity to be successful at UCR. College tuition is also considerably lower than university tuition. At the partner community college of your choice, you will enroll in a program that will ensure you have the course prerequisites you need to successfully transfer back to UCR after two years of study, without an SAT or TOEFL score, for the final two years of study leading to degree completion. Conditional letters of acceptance are provided to students who apply for the UCR-ITT program on their application. Two letters of conditional admission are sent along with an acceptance letter for the Intensive English Language Program: one from our partner community colleges for the first two years of study and another from the University of California, Riverside, for the final two years of the bachelor s degree program. Note: The initial I-20 is issued only for the length of the Intensive English Program. After completion of level 600, you will make an application to the community college of your choice. A transfer I-20 will be issued to allow you to further your study at the community college. You will follow the same process when you apply back to UCR after two years of study. Course options Students can choose from a range of credit classes across disciplines. However, fully admitted UCR undergraduate and graduate students have registration priority. UCP students can select their courses once the quarter has begun, subject to availability. UCP students must meet all prerequisites. Undergraduate and Graduate level courses UCP students have access to courses in over 80 undergraduate and 50 graduate programs. UCR is one of only three UC campuses with an undergraduate program in business. However, availability is limited and students should not expect to get into their first choice of classes*. We recommend students choose between 10 and 15 courses they are interested in, and have been approved by their home institution. Our College Advising Office works with each student to ensure a full course load. *Some courses are restricted and/or require additional professional fees. MBA courses require additional professional fees. Extension Classes In addition to day time classes, UCP students also have access to a wide range of Extension classes that are normally offered in the late afternoon and evenings. Many Extension courses carry University of California credit and every Extension course has been approved by the UCR Academic Senate Committee on courses. Extension courses give students the opportunity to study with professionals from the community and make excellent business connections. Extension courses are taught by working professionals in the top of their fields. UCP students have full access to and can pre-select Extension courses. What is Extension? UCR Extension is the continuing education and professional studies department of the University of California, Riverside. It offers non-degree, professional courses and Certificate Programs. Many Extension courses carry UCR credit and like all UCR courses, classes are rigorous. Courses provide great opportunities to network with other professionals. Course assistance A UCR IEP College Advisor is available to all students to assist them in the course enrollment. Upon completion of each quarter of study, students may request an official UCR Extension transcript which details grades and numbers of credits that can be transferred back to your home institution. Summer Studies Undergraduate and graduate courses offered during the summer quarter (June through September) are available to international visiting students; however, they are not considered part of the UCP program. Summer quarter classes follow a separate date and fee structure, which is announced each February. The summer quarter is divided into 5-week sessions. Students can take a maximum of 2 courses during each 5-week session. Students have the same priority as UCR students for summer session courses, which is on a first-come-first-served basis. Students enrolled in UCP during the summer session still have full access to Extension credit courses.
