3 University History and Profile Established in British Columbia in 2004 as a private Canadian university, University Canada West (UCW) offers regular and accelerated programs, based on market-driven curriculum and a flexible model of delivery. This allows students to pursue the exact kind of education that suits their needs and obtain a university degree. UCW operates under the authority of the British Columbia Ministry of Science and Universities, on recommendation of the British Columbia Degree Quality Assessment Board (DQAB). ( Under the leadership of Dr. Verna Magee-Shepherd, BA, MSc, EdD, President and Vice Chancellor, UCW offers two bachelor degrees (Bachelor of Arts in Media and Communications and Bachelor of Commerce) and one graduate degree (Master of Business Administration). Dr. Magee-Shepherd leads a team of staff and faculty, many of whom have held executive leadership positions at a number of universities and colleges across Canada. The University is governed by an Academic Council that focuses on academic quality and the instillation of sound academic policies and procedures. University Canada West has introduced a number of innovations to make university education more accessible to both domestic and international students. These include: Admission that sets a 65% average as the prerequisite for admission to UCW undergraduate programs as well as an eight-week term allowing students to complete their degrees faster. Degree Completion Program allows students to transfer a recognized Business Administration diploma as credits towards a Bachelor of Commerce degree. Students may also apply to transfer credits from a recognized Media or Communications diploma towards completion of a Bachelor of Arts degree specializing in Media and Communications. This can be accomplished by way of an articulation agreement with specific colleges and universities through an evaluation process with the approval of the Senior Academic Officer or the Dean. Transfer Course Credits allows students to transfer their course credits from any previous recognized postsecondary institutions towards completion of an undergraduate degree offered at UCW with the approval of the Senior Academic Officer or the Dean. Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition process to further extend access to potential students. This process includes work experience, training courses and other related education that may be applicable to a degree. UCW s eight-week term system allows students to complete a greater number of courses faster than they would in a traditional three-semester system. UCW offers both undergraduate and graduate programs on campus, as well as online studies as an option for domestic students or those international students who decide to study in their home countries. Classes start every 10 weeks and they include 8 weeks of instruction. Page 2

4 UCW s Unique Differences UCW campus is located in the business district of downtown Vancouver. Eight-week term system allows students to complete a greater number of courses faster than they would in a traditional 3-semester system. Flexible admission that allows for students with a 65% average or above in high school admission to UCW undergraduate degree program, and a B average (or equivalent) in their last year of study in their Bachelors for admission into the graduate degree program. 3 main intakes a year (January, June and September), with additional intake options. Credits and credentials from other educational institutions may be recognized and applied towards the student s intended program through P.L.A.R. No GMAT required for the MBA program. 5 Undergraduate Degrees Bachelor of Commerce, General Studies (BCom) The Bachelor of Commerce, General Studies degree program prepares graduates with a solid academic background, as well as practical real-world knowledge and skills to apply in various business environments. This program examines a number of subjects which include: Accounting, Advertising, Business Law, Management and Entrepreneurship, Team Projects, and effective communication skills. In addition, specific attention is paid to the areas of International Business, Tourism Management, Strategic Leadership, and E- Business. Students who have taken business or management programs may be eligible for advance standing, provided they meet UCW requirements for transfer credit and/ or P.L.A.R. Bachelor of Arts, Media and Communications (BA) The primary theoretical outcome of the Bachelor of Arts, Media and Communications degree program is an understanding of the following: mass media roles in a democratic society, theories of communication practices in the circulation of information, legal and ethical responsibilities of media, media roles in relation to government, media as business organizations facilitates economic life, and media roles in public relations. The electronic and print media together constitute one of the important factors in the twenty-first century, therefore, the gathering, analysis, interpretation, storing, and presentation of information in various media channels strongly influence decision making within various business segments. Practical outcomes include strong communication skills, both written and verbal, which are adaptable in a variety of media workspace contexts. Graduate Degree Master of Business Administration (MBA) University Canada West offers a 2 year Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree program that emphasizes leadership, communication, action, and solutions. The program enhances students professional abilities and facilitates the development of contemporary business skills for potential employers. Students learn to identify challenges and opportunities, draw on technology and information, and use advanced analytical and planning approaches that will allow them to create positive changes for an organization. Students in the MBA program also build competencies in critical thinking, persuasive communication, systems analysis, change management, leadership, diversity, business ethics, and project management. Completion of senior secondary/ high school from a recognized high school. Student must have taken a Math 11 (or equivalent) and English 12 (or equivalent). Required English language proficiency (i.e., IELTS 6.5 with no less than 6.0 in each band and TOEFL score of 86 IBT). The score must not be over two years old. Before the Official Letter of Acceptance (LOA) is issued, students must prepay the tuition deposit for four bachelor degree courses. Master of Business Administration (MBA) Application form completed and signed. A non-refundable application fee. Bachelor degree from a recognized university or college. Degree completion certificate for the bachelor degree from a recognized post-secondary Institution. Earned a B average or better in the last year of the program. Required English proficiency, (i.e., IELTS 6.5 with no less than 6.0 in each band and TOEFL score of 86 IBT). The score must not be over two years old. A current Résumé and a Letter of Intent. Before the Official Letter of Acceptance (LOA) is issued, students must prepay the tuition deposit for two master degree courses. Students must have their credentials officially evaluated by one of the international credential evaluation services (i.e., ICES or WES) before the end of first term at the university. Page 5

10 English Language Requirements The language of instruction at University Canada West is English. In order to be accepted as an undergraduate or graduate student at UCW, a student must achieve a sufficient level of knowledge of English. If English is not the applicant s first language, he or she must provide evidence of English language proficiency from standardized tests such as IELTS or TOEFL. Depending on the results of these tests, students may be required to take English language classes prior to their academic program. The following are the levels of proficiency that would be expected as minimum requirements for successful completion of a degree program at UCW: International English Language Testing System (IELTS): 6.5 overall, with no band score less than 6.0. TOEFL: 575 (Paper based) or 233 (Computer based) or 86 (Internet based). TOEIC: 755 Language Proficiency Index (LPI): 5 or better. CanTEST: 4.5 in reading and listening, 4.0 in writing. Carleton English Language Test: 60 overall, with 60 in writing proficiency. Michigan English Language Assessment Battery: 82 York English Language Test: 5 University Canada West offers an English for Academic Purposes (EAP) Program which is designed for students whose level of English is lower than the required score on standardized tests such as those mentioned above. 11 English for Academic Purposes (EAP) The best way to learn English is through a well-designed program of study and immersion in the language. EAP offers excellent language training, not only focusing on the four necessary language skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking), but also on integrated learning skills such as analysis, research, notes taking, critical thinking and intercultural communication. Students learn from highly-qualified teachers in small international classes where English is the only language spoken. The English for Academic Purposes Program is a bridge or support to help learners meet the language requirements for UCW degree programs. Standardized English Language Score EAP Level Description Tuition IELTS: 6.0 TOEFL (IBT): TOEFL (PBT): TOEFL (CBT): Level 4 (12 weeks) Emphasis in this low-advanced course is on reviewing all previous skills, language, and grammar, and encouraging the automation of the language. Students are encouraged to communicate and produce language that is grammatically accurate and situation-specific and appropriate. After completing this level, they will able to function entirely in English-speaking society and the workplace. If the institution does not provide instruction in the English language, all documentation must also be accompanied by certified translations. Photocopies, faxes, or notarized copies of transcripts are not acceptable for admission to UCW undergraduate programs, unless the student is from a country where only one transcript is issued and the student has a World Education Services (WES) or International Credit Evaluation Service (ICES) evaluation completed.
