1 IST 195 Laboratory Session 8 - Privacy In this lab, students will be asked to access a web-based content management cloud storage system. As learned in class, cloud computing is that allows files to be stored and accessed in real time. Lots of the work that we do online is done in the cloud! Due to the increase in the cloud s popularity, students will store files in the free hosting service Dropbox and complete a privacy risk analysis. Additionally, students will assess their privacy score via Profile Watch and list practices that can protect personal information online. Lastly, students will use Collusion for Google Chrome to learn how to stay protected from websites tracking personal to suggest advertisements and more. Upon completion of this lab, students will: Understand cloud computing Know how to store and share files on Dropbox Have completed a competitive analysis of cloud storage services Understand how to protect information online Receive a personal privacy score Know where information goes when served a cookie Have tools which monitor shadow connections Submission instructions: Students are required to submit one MS Word document (doc.,docx) to Blackboard by 4:59PM on Friday. Be sure that your submission includes your last name (i.e. Dziedzic_lab8.docx). Late submissions will not be accepted. Part 1: Dropbox (If you already use Dropbox you do not need to sign up using a different address. Just sign in using your current credentials.) 1.) Go to 2.) Click Sign up, enter in your first name, last name, address, and choose a password. Check I agree to Dropbox Terms

2 3.) Next, choose the Basic (free) plan. Click continue. We do not require you to purchase additional gigabyte packages.

3 4.) Dropbox should start downloading automatically. 5.) Open the Dropbox installer from your browser s Download s window, double click on the.exe file that you just downloaded. 6.) A security warning will pop up. Click Run.

4 7.) If you are using a desktop on SU s campus, a pop-up will appear alerting you that you do not have proper admin rights to access all features. For this lab, click Yes. If you d like, you can redownload Dropbox to your personal desktop, laptop, or smartphone by entering in the same sign-in credentials used in step 2. 8.) The Dropbox installation wizard will appear. Click Install.

5 9.) Type in the address and password you used to sign up for Dropbox and click Sign In. Next, click Open my Dropbox folder.

6 10.) Find the Dropbox icon on your Desktop and double click on it. You should see a Getting Started PDF file in the application. This will provide you with a summary of how to use Dropbox for personal use. 11.) Next, we re going to save a file in the Dropbox folder. Return to your Dropbox page on your browser and click Put files in your Dropbox folder.

7 12.) Use the Upload and choose at least one file to be dropped in your Dropbox. This can include anything from an image to a lab or assignment. 13.) Take a screenshot of the uploaded files in your Dropbox folder. When taking the screenshot, make sure that your first and last name is visible in the top right hand corner like featured here: 14.) Paste this screenshot into your lab 8 template. Part 2: Competitive Analysis 1.) Dropbox was strategically chosen for this lab because it s one of the most popular (and free) cloud file hosting services. However, with increased popularity among cloud software, hundreds of other cloud storage services have surfaced over the past few years. For this part of the lab you are to conduct a competitive analysis of any three cloud service providers other than Dropbox. Please note that Wikipedia is not a scholarly source and should not be used as part of your research. Refer to the lab template for a competitive analysis table. Part 3: Personal Privacy Score To properly protect yourself online, it s beneficial to first acquire a privacy score. 1.) Go to: 2.) Paste in your Facebook Profile URL. a. You can find this URL by clicking the settings icon in the top right hand corner of Facebook. i.e. Timeline: facebook.com/sdziedzic b. You can also find your URL by navigating to your profile page. Once you are there all you have to do is copy the URL of that page and paste it into the profilewatch bar.

8 3.) *NOTE: If you do not have a Facebook profile, click on Mark Zuckerberg s score 4.) Click Check Profile. 5.) Take a screenshot of your online privacy score and paste it into the lab 8 template.

9 Step 4: Collusion Now you are going to explore a website that can help you learn about online protection. 1.) Open up the Chrome web browser and navigate to the following link 2.) Once you arrive at the website click on the tab named RELATED. You will see a list of several different Chrome apps that can help protect you online. 3.) Hover your mouse over Ghostery then click on the button that says + Free. A box will pop up asking if you want to confirm new extension. Click the Add button. You will know it has been added when you see the green check mark.

10 Note: If Ghostery does not show up immediately underneath the RELATED tab you may have to search for it. To do this, navigate to the chrome web store and search for Ghostery there. When you locate Ghostery follow the directions above to add it. 4.) Next, go to the new tab that opened to take you to the Ghostery site. Click through the wizard using the arrows on the right of your screen. This wizard will tell you more about what Ghostery can do. 5.) Ghostery is only one of several site you can use to help protect yourself online. Explore at least 1 other site on Collusion by adding it and navigating through the tutorials or signing up. One that we recommend (but do not require) that you research is DoNotTrackMe: Online Privacy. 6.) When you have finished exploring at least one other site, take a screenshot of your Collusion page. This screenshot should show that Ghostery has been added and at least one other site as well (if you need to use two screenshots to do this you may). The sites that have been added will show a green check mark. Paste the screenshot(s) into your Lab 8 Template. 7.) Finally, go back into your Lab 8 Template. What are three ways you can protect yourself online? Fill in the three different ways you can protect yourself online that you learned through your exploration of Collusion, Ghostery, and another site. Submit one lab template which include 3 screenshots, the competitive analysis, and three ways you can protect yourself online.
