2 MLTV INFORMATION SHEET Project Code: TZ-UV.LMTV.01 Location: Mbande-TEMEKE Theme: Early Childhood Education No. of volunteers: 12 Starting: Strictly Thursdays Ending: Strictly Fridays Note: June and December is long school holidays (No placements available) 1.0 PRACTICAL INFORMATION 1.1 Meeting point: Arrange your arrival destination to be Dar es Salaam. Volunteers will be picked up at Julius Nyerere International Airport; Dar es Salaam on their arrival. Each Volunteer is required to send participation re-confirmation to this office by at least seven days before arrival in the country indicating their flight number, arrival date and time. 1.2 Arrival day to the project Arrival is preferably to be Thursday unless volunteer is finding difficult to arrange for transport. 1.3 Departure date: The project will officially end on the Friday of the last week and volunteers will be free to depart anytime on Saturday before 09:00 Hrs. Volunteer wishing to have drop off service to the airport or Bus/Railway station after the project should inform us in advance and it will attract a little cost. 1.4 Finances: A nonrefundable minimum fee of 600 (Euro) will be paid to cover a period of up to 8 weeks in the project. Each extra month will be charged 300. The participation fee does not cover medical services cost, Visas or permits, pocket money, free/leisure activities and other personal expenses. However it covers covers pick up from the airport or bus station upon arrival in Tanzania, Orientation at the UVIKIUTA Youth Hostel, local transport to the work placements, food and accommodation during the work camp. Volunteers wishing to arrive earlier or staying longer at UVIKIUTA Hostel will contribute 15 per day to cover the cost of meals and accommodation at UVIKIUTA Youth centre. 1.5 Registration: Register yourself on arrival at our office and provide the original signed participation agreement (Available at the end of this document), copy of your Passport and two passport size photos. 3 2.0 GENERAL PARTICIPATION CONDITIONS Volunteers will be accepted in the project upon meeting the following conditions:- a) Age: Volunteers must have passed his/her 18 th birthday on the arrival date to the project. There is no age limit. Senior volunteers are encouraged to join. b) Motivation: Volunteers should be interested in volunteer work, open minded, flexible, and interested in culture and conditions in Tanzania c) How to apply: Application will be received through sending organizations in the country of volunteer s resident at least eight weeks before the project start. Application form should be accompanied with scanned copy of passport (personal details page), motivation letter and signed Participation agreement (See attachment at the end) d) Duration: Volunteer can stay in the project for a minimum of eight (8) weeks maximum three months, provided that the placement is available. e) Language: Official Languages of the projects are English and Kiswahili f) Meals and Accommodation: Volunteers will be placed in the host families. Meals and accommodation will be provided in the family for the entire period of the project. g) Insurance: UVIKIUTA will provide no insurances for the volunteers. h) Visas: UVIKIUTA will provide an invitation letter on request as soon as the application confirmed. However it is recommended that; volunteers prepare all necessary documents to obtain visas themselves. Please check with Tanzanian high commission/embassy or consular nearest to you for more updated information. 3.0 THINGS TO BRING WITH YOU TO THE PROJECT Things to bring with you Do not bring anything you cannot carry yourself. Restrict yourself to one bag and one small daypack that can hold your camera, Swahili phrasebook, water bottle, lunch, sunglasses, sunscreen, a small first-aid kit, and any extra articles of clothing you might need to handle changes in weather. Clothing: Modest cotton clothing (not tight, flashy, ripped or displaying potentially offensive inscriptions or illustrations) is the most appropriate. Military wear are Cool summer clothes- sometimes it can be really cold at this time of the year; bring some warm cloths Few nice clothes for parties, ceremonies and special occasions Long pants and long sleeved shirts Shorts (not short shorts) and T-shirts that cover shoulders. Miscellaneous Add any of these items to your list according to your own personal preference Small supply of: disinfectant, Band-Aids, gauze and adhesive tape, calamine lotion, insect repellent, throat lozenges, pain killer, anti-acid, and any on-going medication You may wish to check with your doctor about what kind of vaccinations you may need Small day-pack Camera Water bottle Pocket English-Swahili dictionary/phrasebook Flash light (torch) and batteries Notebook and pens for personal diary Sewing kit with needle and thread Sunglasses Extra pair of prescription glasses, if applicable Music instruments, CD player, playing cards, various games that you would like to share Souvenirs, recipes and other items you may need for cultural exchange/ cultural evening Two passport size photographs (please hand these photos on during the registration of volunteers on arrival) Donation? Sometimes we are asked by volunteers, if they can bring some stuff to donate and what is useful for them to bring. Yes, some people will be in need of materials you want to bring; e.g. those living in poverty, widows, seniors, orphans, vulnerable children s etc. Some donations can go to the project. You may want to bring the following items, but to do not feel obliged to do so; English language books for children and for secondary schools Pencils, colors, Exercise books and other educational aid Sports stuff (Balls, wears, equipment s etc.) Children and adult cloths Posters, materials and any other resources related to the project theme Do not bring: Medicines or food stuff including sweets for donation!! 5 4.0 THE PROJECT 4.1 Location: The Project will take place in Mbande about 30km South of Dar es salaam along Charambe and Mbande Road. 4.1 How to get there: UVIKIUTA will organize transport to bring the volunteers to the project community as well paying for the pickup cost. However Transport cost to bring back the volunteers to the airport or other destinations should be covered by individual volunteers or their sponsoring organization depending on where they would like to go next. Our Project leader will be available to provide useful information and directions. 4.2 Project description: This project is organised in Partnership with Local early childhood education centres after 2 years of implementing pilot project to support the initiative of local community members to provide early childhood education services. The main goal of the project is to help children develop cognitively and socially introduce them to the school setting and prepare them for Primary school education. Through early childhood education, children gain long-lasting academic and social benefits that will benefit them throughout their lives. 4.3 Type of Work: Academic skills development: To assist Children to develop academic skills on literacy, mathematics, science and even social studies. Physical Development: To support the children to learn about moving - demonstrates basic gross motor skills, demonstrates basic fine motor skills. Cognitive Development: To assist children learn about the world - sustains attention, understands how objects can be used, shows a beginning understanding of cause and effect, shows a beginning understanding that things can be grouped, uses problem solving strategies, engages in pretend play. Social development: To support the children about self and others - trusts known, caring adults, regulates own behavior, plays with other children, learns to be a member of a group, and uses personal care skills. Language development: To learn about communicating - develops receptive language, develops expressive language, participates in conversations, understands and uses words, enjoys books and being read to, shows an awareness of pictures and print, experiments with drawing and writing. 4.4 Accommodation and Food: Volunteers will be accommodated in the host families in the community. Get prepared to share life and experience with the local host families. Volunteer and the host family will share tasks in preparing meals and other house chaos. 4.5 Free time activities: Volunteers can only plan their safari and travel after or before the project however during the week ends they can arrange to spend their time outside the project. Possibilities are overnight in Zanzibar or Bagamoyo (Historical sites, Beach/Swimming, Eco/Cultural tour), Dar es Salaam (Sight seen, Beach/Swimming), Selous National Park (Wild life safari) and Rufiji River safari. More options can be recommended by the host families or project leaders. 5.0 UVIKIUTA VOLUNTEERS CODE OF CONDUCT In order to promote and enhance health, safety and security in our projects, all volunteers are required to comply with the established volunteers code of conduct. Failure to comply may result in immediate expulsion from the project. 5.1 Safety i) Volunteers are not to act in any way that could put themselves or others at the risk of any kind ii) Being under the influence of alcohol will interfere with the ability to deliver services. Consumption of alcohol at the work place and accommodation facility is prohibited. However volunteers can access the drinks outside the work place/ accommodation facilities and take them responsibly. 6 iii) Volunteers are expected to show respect in the use of all equipment s of their host project and apply it in the way intended. iv) Volunteers are also expected to make use of any safety equipment which may be provided v) Volunteers will follow all instructions and procedures to the best of their ability at all times vi) Volunteers will promote healthy and safe work practices by ensuring that co-workers adhere to a similar approach and by taking appropriate steps in relation to those who do not follow these requirements vii) Volunteers are expected to respect the established curfew s to be in their accommodation not later than 07:00pm. Volunteer wishing to be out after that time should consult the project leader. 5.2 Legal i) Volunteers are expected to respect UVIKIUTA policies and those of cooperated partners on the ground ii) Volunteers must comply with Tanzanian laws iii) Volunteers must not consume illegal substances. Failure to comply may result in immediate expulsion from the program and/or arrest 5.3 Respect and Integrity i) Volunteers are to promote integrity by being responsible, honest, fair and respectful of others ii) Volunteers must always respect the fundamental rights, dignity and worth of all people. This includes the right of each individual to privacy, confidentiality, self-determination and culture iii) Volunteers are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of all proprietary or privileged information to which they are exposed to while serving as a volunteer. Such information includes but is not limited to: information regarding staff, volunteer, member or third party iv) Volunteers should always use the resources of UVIKIUTA and those of the cooperated partners on the ground in an appropriate manner v) Volunteers must respect and take good care of accommodation provided for their use during THE program activities. vi) UVIKIUTA needs to be kept informed through Project leaders about the whereabouts of Volunteers during the program period. It is compulsory to inform and ask for permission from the Project Leaders regarding any travel plans, especially travel outside the described hosting community. 5.4 Commitment to the program i) Volunteers carry responsibility towards the organization and should demonstrate willingness to adapt to their surroundings and fulfill the agreed tasks. During the program you will be involved in activities of various interest and importance. Please note, while some of the tasks and requirements may seem routine or self-explanatory, they are still important in running the program. Volunteers are expected to complete the tasks and adhere to rules ii) Always strive to maintain high standards of competence whilst working. Recognize and express to your Project leader the boundaries of your particular competences and the limitations of your expertise Volunteers must attend all the activities and training programs, which have been arranged for the implementation of the program. iii) Volunteers must stay in the project for the agreed duration unless there is a valid reason for leaving. These reasons should be discussed with UVIKIUTA and the sending Partner Organization before leaving the project. UVIKIUTA cannot be held responsible in any way for volunteers who choose to leave the program without discussing the matter in advance following outlined procedures. iv) Youth Volunteer, who wishes to leave the program early, must notify UVIKIUTA, of their intention to withdraw from the program by using agreed formal documents, through project leader. v) That pre-mature leaving the program does not necessarily take away responsibilities agreed between the volunteers and UVIKIUTA (Please refer to the Participation agreement). 7 5.5 Complaints i) Volunteers have the responsibility to maintain contact with their project Leaders and to seek guidance when necessary ii) Concerns and challenges should be discussed, UVIKIUTA can only act when it is aware of a problem 5.6 Representing UVIKIUTA Prior to any actions or statements that may significantly affect or obligate UVIKIUTA; Volunteers should seek prior consultation and approval from appropriate staff. These actions may include, but are not limited to, public statements to the press, coalition of or lobbying efforts with other organizations, or any agreements involving contracts, resources, finances, or other obligations. 6.0 PARTICIPATION CONFIRMATION Volunteers should signed and submit the acceptance form below to UVIKIUTA on arrival. This should be attached with 2 passport size photos and photocopy of Volunteers passport. English language is an official language of instruction (Teaching) in all secondary schools across Tanzania. However, Pupils will start using English as Language of instruction in all subjects when they enter form one at the age of This has been experienced as one of the challenge to master their subjects. This project is aiming to develop/improve speaking, writing, and reading English language among the pupils so that they can manage their studies. 4.4 Type of Work: Volunteer s tasks will be to assisting academic staff in teaching English as well the remedial classes (Slow learners). 4.5 Accommodation and Food: Volunteers will be accommodated in the host families in the community. 15 MLTV INFORMATION SHEET Project Code: TZ-UV.LMTV.03 Location: ILALA-Msogola Theme: Teaching Science & Mathematics No. of volunteers: 6 Starting: Strictly Thursdays Ending: Strictly Fridays 1.0 PRACTICAL INFORMATION 1.1 Meeting point: Arrange your arrival destination to be Dar es Salaam. Volunteers will be picked up at Julius Nyerere International Airport; Dar es Salaam on their arrival. Each Volunteer is required to send participation re-confirmation to this office by at least seven days before arrival in the country indicating their flight number, arrival date and time. 1.2 Arrival day to the project Arrival is preferably to be Thursday unless volunteer is finding difficult to arrange for transport. 1.3 Departure date: The project will officially end on the Friday of the last week and volunteers will be free to depart anytime on Saturday before 09:00 Hrs. Volunteer wishing to have drop off service to the airport or Bus/Railway station after the project should inform us in advance and it will attract a little cost. 1.4 Finances: A nonrefundable minimum fee of 600 (Euro) will be paid to cover a period of up to 8 weeks in the project. Each extra month will be charged 300. The participation fee does not cover medical services cost, Visas or permits, pocket money, free/leisure activities and other personal expenses. However it covers covers pick up from the airport or bus station upon arrival in Tanzania, Orientation at the UVIKIUTA Youth Hostel, local transport to the work placements, food and accommodation during the work camp. Volunteers wishing to arrive earlier or staying longer at UVIKIUTA Hostel will contribute 15 per day to cover the cost of meals and accommodation at UVIKIUTA Youth centre. 1.5 Registration: Register yourself on arrival at our office and provide the original signed participation agreement (Available at the end of this document), copy of your Passport and two passport size photos. 16 2.0 GENERAL PARTICIPATION CONDITIONS Volunteers will be accepted in the project upon meeting the following conditions:- a) Age: Volunteers must have passed his/her 18 th birthday on the arrival date to the project. There is no age limit. Senior volunteers are encouraged to join. b) Motivation: Volunteers should be interested in volunteer work, open minded, flexible, and interested in culture and conditions in Tanzania c) How to apply: Application will be received through sending organizations in the country of volunteer s resident at least eight weeks before the project start. Application form should be accompanied with scanned copy of passport (personal details page), motivation letter and signed Participation agreement (See attachment at the end) d) Duration: Volunteer can stay in the project for a minimum of eight (8) weeks maximum three months, provided that the placement is available. e) Language: Official Languages of the projects are English and Kiswahili f) Meals and Accommodation: Volunteers will be placed in the host families. Meals and accommodation will be provided in the family for the entire period of the project. g) Insurance: UVIKIUTA will provide no insurances for the volunteers. h) Visas: UVIKIUTA will provide an invitation letter on request as soon as the application confirmed. However it is recommended that; volunteers prepare all necessary documents to obtain visas themselves. Please check with Tanzanian high commission/embassy or consular nearest to you for more updated information. 3.0 THINGS TO BRING WITH YOU TO THE PROJECT Things to bring with you Do not bring anything you cannot carry yourself. Restrict yourself to one bag and one small daypack that can hold your camera, Swahili phrasebook, water bottle, lunch, sunglasses, sunscreen, a small first-aid kit, and any extra articles of clothing you might need to handle changes in weather. Clothing: Modest cotton clothing (not tight, flashy, ripped or displaying potentially offensive inscriptions or illustrations) is the most appropriate. Military wear are strictly illegal and thus will not be accepted. Cool summer clothes- sometimes it can be really cold at this time of the year; bring some warm cloths Few nice clothes for parties, ceremonies and special occasions Long pants and long sleeved shirts Shorts (not short shorts) and T-shirts that cover shoulders. You may want to bring the following items, but to do not feel obliged to do so; English language books for children and for secondary schools Pencils, colors, Exercise books and other educational aid Sports stuff (Balls, wears, equipment s etc.) Children and adult cloths Posters, materials and any other resources related to the project theme Do not bring: Medicines or food stuff including sweets for donation!! 6.0 THE PROJECT 6.1 Location: The Project will take place in Msongola, about 45km south of Dar es Salaam city center. 6.2 How to get there: UVIKIUTA will organize transport to bring the volunteers to the project community as well paying for the transport cost. However Transport cost to bring back the volunteers to the airport or other destinations should be covered by individual volunteers or their sponsoring organisations depending on where they would like to go next. 18 4.3 Description: This project is organised in Partnership with Local community public schools in the area. Performance of Pupils seating for National examinations at least on mathematics and sciences subjects has been dropping down over the years in various community schools. One of the reasons is inadequate teachers among many other factors. This project is aiming to improve performance of the students so that they can do their best on those subjects hence shape their future. 4.4 Type of Work: Volunteers will work to assist the existing academic and general staff of the school in improving performance in science and mathematics subjects (Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics) This will include teaching assistance in the specified subjects. Depending on creativity of the volunteer, interest and availability of resources, there is a big possibility to have extra activities for the students like sports, games, recreational and extra curricula activities. 4.5 Accommodation and Food: Volunteers will be accommodated in the host families in the community. Get prepared to share life and experience with the local host families. Volunteer and the host family will share tasks in preparing meals and other house chaos. 4.6 Free time activities: Volunteers can only plan their safari and travel after or before the project however during the week ends they can arrange to spend their time outside the project. Possibilities are overnight in Zanzibar or Bagamoyo (Historical sites, Beach/Swimming, Eco/Cultural tour), Dar es Salaam (Sight seen, Beach/Swimming), Selous National Park (Wild life safari) and Rufiji River safari. Project leaders and host families will be available to provide more options/ 7.0 UVIKIUTA VOLUNTEERS CODE OF CONDUCT In order to promote and enhance health, safety and security in our projects, all volunteers are required to comply with the established volunteers code of conduct. Failure to comply may result in immediate expulsion from the project. 7.1 Safety i) Volunteers are not to act in any way that could put themselves or others at the risk of any kind ii) Being under the influence of alcohol will interfere with the ability to deliver services. Consumption of alcohol at the work place and accommodation facility is prohibited. However volunteers can access the drinks outside the work place/ accommodation facilities and take them responsibly. iii) Volunteers are expected to show respect in the use of all equipment s of their host project and apply it in the way intended. iv) Volunteers are also expected to make use of any safety equipment which may be provided v) Volunteers will follow all instructions and procedures to the best of their ability at all times vi) Volunteers will promote healthy and safe work practices by ensuring that co-workers adhere to a similar approach and by taking appropriate steps in relation to those who do not follow these requirements vii) Volunteers are expected to respect the established curfew s to be in their accommodation not later than 07:00pm. Volunteer wishing to be out after that time should consult the project leader. 7.2 Legal i) Volunteers are expected to respect UVIKIUTA policies and those of cooperated partners on the ground ii) Volunteers must comply with Tanzanian laws iii) Volunteers must not consume illegal substances. Failure to comply may result in immediate expulsion from the program and/or arrest 7.3 Respect and Integrity i) Volunteers are to promote integrity by being responsible, honest, fair and respectful of others LTMV 01 Information sheet (Revised 21 st May 2015 Page 18
19 ii) Volunteers must always respect the fundamental rights, dignity and worth of all people. This includes the right of each individual to privacy, confidentiality, self-determination and culture iii) Volunteers are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of all proprietary or privileged information to which they are exposed to while serving as a volunteer. Such information includes but is not limited to: information regarding staff, volunteer, member or third party iv) Volunteers should always use the resources of UVIKIUTA and those of the cooperated partners on the ground in an appropriate manner v) Volunteers must respect and take good care of accommodation provided for their use during THE program activities. vi) UVIKIUTA needs to be kept informed through Project leaders about the whereabouts of Volunteers during the program period. It is compulsory to inform and ask for permission from the Project Leaders regarding any travel plans, especially travel outside the described hosting community. 7.4 Commitment to the program i) Volunteers carry responsibility towards the organization and should demonstrate willingness to adapt to their surroundings and fulfill the agreed tasks. During the program you will be involved in activities of various interest and importance. Please note, while some of the tasks and requirements may seem routine or self-explanatory, they are still important in running the program. Volunteers are expected to complete the tasks and adhere to rules ii) Always strive to maintain high standards of competence whilst working. Recognize and express to your Project leader the boundaries of your particular competences and the limitations of your expertise Volunteers must attend all the activities and training programs, which have been arranged for the implementation of the program. iii) Volunteers must stay in the project for the agreed duration unless there is a valid reason for leaving. These reasons should be discussed with UVIKIUTA and the sending Partner Organization before leaving the project. UVIKIUTA cannot be held responsible in any way for volunteers who choose to leave the program without discussing the matter in advance following outlined procedures. iv) Youth Volunteer, who wishes to leave the program early, must notify UVIKIUTA, of their intention to withdraw from the program by using agreed formal documents, through project leader. v) That pre-mature leaving the program does not necessarily take away responsibilities agreed between the volunteers and UVIKIUTA (Please refer to the Participation agreement). 7.5 Complaints i) Volunteers have the responsibility to maintain contact with their project Leaders and to seek guidance when necessary ii) Concerns and challenges should be discussed, UVIKIUTA can only act when it is aware of a problem 5.6 Representing UVIKIUTA Prior to any actions or statements that may significantly affect or obligate UVIKIUTA; Volunteers should seek prior consultation and approval from appropriate staff. These actions may include, but are not limited to, public statements to the press, coalition of or lobbying efforts with other organizations, or any agreements involving contracts, resources, finances, or other obligations. 6.0 PARTICIPATION CONFIRMATION Volunteers should signed and submit the acceptance form below to UVIKIUTA on arrival.
