2 MEET THE FACULTY SANTIAGO ALVAREZ DE MON Dr. Santiago Alvarez de Mon is professor in the Department of Managing People in Organizations. His areas of interest include employee participation, cooperative labor relations, transforming leadership: initiative and personal creativity, interpersonal relationships in companies: communication, high performance team keys. His areas of interest include, professional coaching, personal development and leadership talent. He is the author of several books on leadership. Ph.D. (Political Science and Sociology), Universidad Pontifícia de Salamanca. AFRICA ARIÑO Dr. Africa Ariño is associate professor in the Department of General Management. She specializes in strategic alliances, particularly in process issues and evolutionary aspects of the interpartner relationship. Dr. Ariño is the Academic Director of the Anselmo Rubiralta Research Center on Globalization and Strategy at IESE, and a member of the Ph.D. Program Committee. She serves as a member of the editorial boards of Group & Organization Management, Journal of Management Research, and Journal of Strategic Management Education. Ph.D. (Management), University of California, Los Angeles. MIGUEL-ANGEL ARIÑO Dr. Miguel Angel Ariño, Associate Director of the Global Executive MBA program at IESE, is professor and head of the Managerial Economics Department. He specializes in the areas of statistics, macroeconomic time series decision making and organizational governance being the author. He is the author of numerous publications and papers. Dr. Ariño was a former Visiting Professor at Sloan School of Management Massachusetts Institute of Technology (USA) and at CEIBS (China). Ph.D. (Mathematics), University of Barcelona. 2
3 JOSÉ MANUEL CAMPA Dr. José Manuel Campa is professor in the Department of Financial Management and Director of Research at IESE. His areas of specialization include exchange rate risk management, foreign exchange rate options, foreign direct investment, mergers and acquisitions and international competition and international industry structure. Dr. Campa is Chaired Professor of Grupo Santander in Financial Institutions, Member of the Expansión and Actualidad Económica Editorial Board, He was winner of the European Financial Management 2004 Top Download Award for the paper Shareholder value creation in European M&As published in the EFM Journal, March He was also winner of the II Fundación Banco Herrero Prize and Bernácer Prize in Ph.D. (Mathematics), University of Barcelona. BRUNO CASSIMAN Dr. Bruno Cassiman is an associate professor of General Management. Before joining IESE Business School, Dr. Cassiman was professor of Economics and Strategy at the University Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona. Dr. Cassiman teaches the core course on Competitive Strategy in the first year of the full-time MBA program and in the Global Executive MBA. Furthermore, he has an important involvement in the IESE doctoral program teaching the first year courses on Microeconomics and Industrial Organization. He has taught at various other schools in the US and in Europe such as the Kellogg School of Management, the Helsinki School of Economics, the Catholic University of Leuven in Belgium, and the Lovanium International School of Management, in St. Petersburg, Russia. Ph.D. (Managerial Economics), Northwestern University (J.L. Kellogg School of Management) JORGE GONZÁLEZ Jorge González in Instructor of Marketing in the Department of Marketing. His areas of research include diffusion of innovations and marketing of new products. He is also interested in the pharmaceutical and telecom industries, market research and strategy and the marketing of new products. Ph.D (Marketing), London Business School. 3
4 ALEJANDRO LAGO Dr. Alejandro Lago is assistant professor at the Technology and Operations Department. His interests and professional experience are in logistics, production systems and the management of complex transportation systems. He has worked for the French Commissariat for Atomic Energy (CEA) and as a consultant for several industrial firms, airlines and port authorities, amongst others. He also joined a Californian start-up during the internet bubble, which surprisingly is still alive. Ph.D. (Engineering), Berkeley, University of California (Gordon F. Newell Fellow) YIH-TEEN LEE Yih-teen Lee is Assistant Professor of Managing People in Organizations. His areas of interest include cross-cultural management & cultural competence, person-environment fit, leadership and its boundary conditions. He won the Best International Paper Award of the Organizational Behavior Division at the 2006 Academy of Management Annual Meeting and is the co-author and co-editor of numerous upcoming books. Ph.D. (Management), University of Lausanne JOHANNA MAIR Dr. Johanna Mair is assistant professor in the General Management Department. She teaches competitive strategy, corporate strategy and social entrepreneurship in the MBA program, the specialization course in strategy in the PhD program, and course development in the International Development Program (IFDP). Dr. Mair s research and teaching interests fall within the domain of corporate strategy and social entrepreneurship. More specifically, she is interested in the role of middle managers and how to foster entrepreneurial activity in established organizations. Furthermore, Dr. Mair investigates business models that aim at integrating economic and social value creation. Ph.D. (Management), INSEAD 4
5 EDUARDO MARTINEZ-ABASCAL Dr. Eduardo Martinez Abascal is professor in the Department of Financial Management. Professor Abascal s research interest cover capital markets, market efficiency, portfolio management, mutual funds, risk management, privatizations and initial public offerings, areas in which he publishes in the business press and academic or financial industry journals. Member of the American Finance Association, the European Finance Association and former Chairman of the European MBA Directors Round Table. He has been Visiting Scholar at the Sloan School of Management, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Author of Entrepreneuring (English, Spanish, 1994), and Corporate Turnaround (English, French, Dutch, Spanish, 1992), amongst other books. Founder and Chairman of FINAVES, venture capital corporation associated to the entrepreneurship activity of IESE Alumni. 6 LUIS PALENCIA Dr. Luis Palencia is assistant professor in the Accounting and Control Department. His areas of specialization include cost systems, financial information and accounting based valuation models. His research is focused on the study of accounting based valuation methods, fundamental analysis and financial reporting. He is involved in various consulting projects for mid-sized companies in the transport sector, e-learning and new technologies. He is a visiting professor at Lagos Business School and was a former assistant professor in managerial accounting and financial reporting at Berkeley, University of California (USA). Ph.D. (Business Administration, Accounting), Berkeley. University of California AHMAD RAHNEMA Dr. Ahmad Rahnema is associate professor of Finance. He teaches corporate finance and international finance in MBA and Executive Education Programs. He has lectured as Visiting Professor at various business schools in the USA, Latin America, Europe and Asia. Professor Rahnema has co-authored four books. His articles have appeared in journals as well as general and business publications, He has worked in a variety of consulting assignments for a number of leading Spanish and international companies. His research has dealt mainly with international finance, risk management, means of payment, and value creation. Prof. Rahnema is co-editor of International Journal of Finance Education. He is also a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Harvard Deusto: Contabilidad & Finanzas. He is also a member of the Advisory Board of the European Capital Markets Institute. Ph.D. (Business Administration), University of Barcelona Master (Business Administration), Western Michigan University ALBERT RIBERA Albert Ribera is a lecturer in the Department of Managing People in Organizations. Throughout his professional career he has mostly held educational and managerial positions in international organizations such as the WHO (World Health Organization), EAMS (Euro Arab Management School), ADBI (Asian Development Bank Institute), the European Commission, and the ICU (Instituto per la Cooperazione Universitaria). He is the author or co-author of six books and several articles. 7 JAUME RIBERA Dr. Jaume Ribera is professor in the Department of Production, Technology and Operations Management. His areas of specialization include design and improvement of operating systems, management of service operations and health systems operations, information systems in operations and project management, the Chinese economy. He is the author of many papers and other publications. Ph.D. (Industrial and Systems Engineering), University of Florida Ph.D. (Industrial Engineering), University of Barcelona MIKE ROSENBERG Mike Rosenberg teaches long-term strategy, scenario planning and analysis of business problems at the Global Executive MBA, MBA and Executive MBA. His research is concerned with how long-term technological and socio economic trends affect the business climate and has a particular interest in the potential of alternative energy sources to change the competitive dynamics of a number of industries including the automotive sector. Prior to joining the faculty, he worked as a Management Consultant to the international automotive industry in Heidrick & Struggles, A.T. Kearney and Arthur D. Little. B.S. University of Michigan JOAN ROURE Joan Roure is a member of IESE s International Advisory Board. He teaches entrepreneurship, innovation and negotiation and his areas of research include, among others, growth and ownership strategy and corporate and family governance. He serves on the Board/Advisory Board of several mid-size companies on grow strategies and M&A Transactions. Also, he advises top management of large organizations such as Telefónica, Bankinter, Deutsche Bank and Gas Natural. He was selected among the Annual Time Digital Europe 25: the most influential people on the European Technology scene. He has been a visiting professor at Stanford and Harvard, and is currently a visiting professor at INSEAD (since 1996) and CEIBS (China). Ph.D. (Engineering Management), Stanford University 7
8 SANDRA SIEBER Dr. Sieber is assistant professor in the Department of Information Systems. Previously, she was associate professor at University Pompeu Fabra (UPF). Currently, she is a visiting scholar at the Sloan School of Management, MIT. Her areas of interest center on strategic management and IS/IT; organizational learning; capability development and the role of information technology (IT); knowledge management; IT, organizational structure and the new organization of work; as well as the impact of new technologies and, in particular, the Internet, on business. She has published scholarly and general articles in national and international journals, magazines and newspapers. Ph.D. (Management), IESE Business School MAXIMILIAM B. TORRES Max Torres is Assistant Professor of Managing People in Organizations and Business Ethics, teaching courses in Business Ethics, Organizational Behavior and Leadership in various IESE programs. He has received numerous awards and prizes and is a permanent member of the University of California at Berkeley s Order of the Golden Bear. Ph.D. in Management, IESE Business School, University of Navarra Juris Doctor, Harvard Law School, Harvard University JOSEP VALOR Dr. Josep Valor is professor in the Department of Information Systems. He has extensive experience in research, teaching and consultancy in the fields of information systems, information technology, and health management. 9 PEDRO VIDELA Dr. Pedro Videla is associate professor in the Department of Economics. He teaches macroeconomics, growth and international economics in MBA and Executive Education Programs. He has lectured as a visiting professor at various business schools in the USA, Latin America, Europe and Asia. Prof. Videla has co-authored three books. His articles have appeared in journals, as well as general and business publications, He has worked for the World Bank, IMF, the European Community, as well as, a number of international companies. His research has dealt mainly with issues of international economics and growth. Prof. Videla is currently advisory editor of the journal Emerging Markets Review (Elsevier). Ph.D. (Economics), University of Chicago JOAQUÍM VILÀ Dr. Joaquim Vilà is associate professor in the Department of General Management. His areas of specialization include strategy and organizing for innovation, management of innovation (drivers of an innovative culture), strategic thinking and managerial action, organizational innovation: the business federation as a new organizational form, management of talent-based organizations and technological change and new technologies/biotechnology. Ph.D. (Strategic Management), Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania Master (Organization and Strategy), Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania JULIÁN VILLANUEVA Dr. Julián Villanueva is the head of the Marketing Department at IESE Business School. His research interests are in the area of Customer Equity. Specifically, developing models capable of measuring and managing the discounted sum of cash-flows of a company s pool of customers. He is also interested in Customer Relationship Management (CRM), price discrimination, customer targeting, internet marketing, sales force management, channels of distribution, and linking marketing intervention to long-run performance. 10 XAVIER VIVES Xavier Vives is Professor of Economics and Financial Management. His professional experience is extensive and international, serving as professor at INSEAD, Harvard University, the University of California at Berkeley, the University of Pennsylvania and New York University, among others. Dr. Vives has been a consultant on competition, regulation and corporate governance issues for the World Bank, the Inter-American Development Bank and the European Commission and has carried out consultancy work for major private corporations. Ph.D. (Economics), University of California, Berkeley Ph.D. (Business and Economics), Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona ERIC WEBER Dr. Eric Weber, associate dean of executive education and the Global Executive MBA at IESE, is a professor in the Department of Accounting and Control. His research areas of interest include Management control systems; cost accounting and decision-making: the design of cost systems; the regulation of the auditing market; differences between North American and European (EU) systems and between specific countries within the European Union. Prior to joining IESE he worked as a Director Consultant in some Spanish companies.
