3 The professors know the industry inside and out, so they teach textile and marketing fundamentals and how to apply classroom learning to real-life situations. Working with the college s technology gave me a strong understanding of digital textile printing, which helped me land my dream job as a member of the marketing team at Spoonflower. Stephanie Hoff Textile Brand Management and Marketing In the Classroom The B.S. degree in Fashion and Textile Management (FTM) provides students with understanding of the development, distribution and marketing of apparel and textile products in today s global industries. All FTM students learn fundamentals of the technical and business components of the apparel and textile industries. The degree is industry-focused, with an emphasis on technology application. unique concentrations: The Textile Brand Management and Marketing concentration focuses on the marketing functions required to promote and distribute products in the fiber, textile and apparel industries. Courses provide knowledge and skills for planning and execution of marketing strategy, brand management, retail planning and allocation, consumer behavior, advertising and promotion, and international trade and sourcing. Courses incorporate active learning, including teamwork and application of classroom knowledge to real-world industry challenges. The Fashion Development and Product Management concentration focuses on the design and manufacture of apparel and textile products for both functional and fashion end uses. Courses cover the fundamentals of product development for apparel and textiles, with a strong emphasis on technology. This concentration provides students with knowledge of sewing, flat pattern making and draping, computer-aided design, and apparel line development and production. Students work actively with industry to address timely challenges in product design and development for textiles and apparel. 4 Beyond the Classroom Study Abroad Students are strongly encouraged to participate in an international experience as they pursue their undergraduate degree. Having a global perspective will distinguish you in the job market, enhance your learning and foster personal growth. A variety of opportunities exist for study abroad. Students are welcome to study at any accredited institution in the world. Undergraduate Research Undergraduates who are interested in pursuing research under the mentorship of a faculty advisor can apply for funding of up to $1,000 to cover the cost of materials, travel to conferences, and living expenses over summer months. Students who want to take advantage of this opportunity provided by the NC State Office of Undergraduate Research must submit a proposal, manage their project and submit a final report. Field Trips Many classes in the College of Textiles offer the chance to visit a factory, corporate headquarters, retail store or even a cotton field so you can have real-world experiences. Through our connections with businesses within the fiber, textile, apparel and retail complex, many opportunities await you. Visiting Speakers As an internationally recognized college, we are frequently visited by prominent figures from the fiber, textile, apparel and retail complex. We provide numerous opportunities for students to connect with powerful players in the industry. Attending the Fashion Education Workshop at the White House hosted by First Lady Michelle Obama as part of her Reach Higher Initiative was one of many great experiences I ve had since joining FTM. I was able to attend workshops and meet industry leaders including former Valentino executive and luxury retail consultant June Haynes, who helped me obtain an internship with a global luxury brand while studying abroad in Milan. Tyler Jackson Textile Brand Management and Marketing Competitions and Fashion Shows The College of Textiles participates in a variety of competitions and fashion shows throughout the year to encourage students to be creative and to give them an opportunity to add these experiences to their resumes. With mentorship from professors, students can enter textile business and design competitions, through which they gain contacts, scholarships and recognition. Student Organizations Learn more about yourself and others by participating in a variety of student organizations, including the Student Advisory Board, the Student Ambassador Program, Fashion Group and Phi Psi textile fraternity. Each organization sponsors activities throughout the year to help students meet other students, professors and industry professionals. I travel the world to visit many of Patagonia s garment factories, where I work with factory staff to commercialize the garment. The College of Textiles gave me the ability to communicate effectively with these partners. Whether it s an issue with operations or an error in pattern engineering, I m able to use my Fashion and Textile Management background to solve the problem. STEP Into Summer With the College of Textiles The college s popular Summer Textile Exploration Program (STEP) for rising high school seniors offers four one-week sessions in areas such as apparel design, textile engineering, business management, fashion and textile design, and polymer and color chemistry. Scholarship Opportunities The College of Textiles has one of the largest college-based scholarship programs at NC State. The majority of the college s scholarship support comes from the North Carolina Textile Foundation (NCTF), which was established in 1942 to promote textile education and research. The foundation s scholarship program has four components: NCTF Centennial Scholarships, worth $10,000 per year; NCTF Scholarships, worth $5,000 per year; NCTF Prestige Scholarships, worth $2,500 per year; and the NCTF Merit Graduate Fellowship. The first dress I made was a great experience. It was gratifying to really think about what I wanted to make and to learn how to draft patterns. I learned about proportions, fit and how to choose materials that would work for my dress. The best moment came when my friend put on the dress and her face lit up with so much glee. Jacob Shindler Fashion Development and Product Management The opportunity to learn spinning, knitting, weaving, dyeing and finishing from industry-trained professors separated NC State from all other textile programs. We were taught textile manufacturing by the best faculty in the world. I never hesitate to reach out to classmates or refer back to my old textbooks when faced with a technical challenge.
