1 GUIDE TO SCHOLARSHIPS AND AWARDS DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS JANUARY 25, 2015 INTRODUCTION The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville School of Business extends appreciation to School of Business scholarship and award sponsors. These sponsors have demonstrated their commitment to assisting students in overcoming some of the financial obstacles encountered while pursuing a degree. Due to the generosity of these individuals, organizations, and companies, there has been a steady increase in the number of scholarships and awards available as well as in the total amount of dollars awarded to students. The School of Business seeks qualified candidates for the scholarships and awards contained in this booklet. A qualified student is defined as a student in good academic standing who meets the donor s criteria. Award criteria may be based on qualities such as leadership, financial need, or community service. This guide provides a brief description of the selection criteria for each of the available scholarships and awards. To be considered for a scholarship or award listed in all sections (except those in the Honors Awards section), you must complete the Scholarship and Awards Application which can be accessed online at: 1. Access the electronic application at the above address and submit by the deadline date. 2. essays (as a Word or PDF document) to Christina Daniels at cdaniel@siue.edu. 3. Letters of recommendation (as a Word or PDF document) should be ed to Christina Daniels at cdaniel@siue.edu by the person writing the letter. 4. Application and all supporting documents must be received by 11:59 pm on January 25, Please state in the application what year you will be (freshman, sophomore, junior, senior, graduate student) during academic year , NOT the year you are now. Notification letters will be sent to students selected to receive scholarships and awards by March 20, 2015.
2 These scholarships and awards will be presented at the Scholarships and Awards Luncheon Thursday, April 10, 2014, from 11:00 a.m.to 1:00 p.m. in the Meridian Ballroom. You should make every effort to be present at the Scholarship & Awards Luncheon if you are awarded a scholarship or award listed in this booklet. Depending on sponsorship, not all scholarships and awards will be available in a given year. Award amounts may be adjusted based on funding. Student must show promise in the field of accounting. Preference will be given to those who are under-represented in the field of accounting. Scholarship is renewable up to 6 semesters. All other criteria being equal, preference will be given to someone who has the characteristics of those who are underrepresented in higher education. Baeske Award $ 500 C T The Boeing Company Scholarship Basis: To a full-time student who has a minimum 3.2 GPA, who has declared a major in Business, and who has leadership attributes. Submit an essay along with the School of Business Scholarship application stating what the student s career objective is, along with a resume including two references, one of whom must be an SIUE faculty member. Marty Burns Memorial Scholarship Basis: To a Business student in good academic standing beginning their junior year who has financial need. Campbell, Jr. Outstanding Student Leadership Basis: To an undergraduate student in the School of Business who has exceptional leadership skills in organizing and executing a student-initiated project. Casstevens Award for Excellence in Business Communications Basis: To an undergraduate Business student with outstanding business communications skills. Sponsor: Friends & colleagues of E.R. Casstevens* F Homer L. & Helen L. Cox Scholarship Basis: Awarded to incoming Freshmen who state a Business major preference, who have a minimum high school GPA of 3.5, and a minimum ACT of 28. Each student will participate in a Mentor Group during the freshman and sophomore years that will be directed by a School of Business faculty member. In the junior and senior years, each student will be assigned to an individual faculty mentor from the students major department. The Cox Scholarship is renewable each year by continuing to meet stated criteria. Sponsor: The Estate of Homer L. Cox* Award: $6,000 C T Thomas DuHadway Memorial Award Basis: To a well-rounded student who is articulate, involved in community and campus activities, and demonstrates leadership. Preference is given to a student working full or part time. Sponsor: Donna DuHadway Award: $ 300 $500 C Enterprise Rent-A-Car Emerging Leader Scholarship Basis: To a full-time undergraduate student in good academic standing who is a declared business major in his/her junior or senior year. The recipient must be a member of a sanctioned SIUE student organization who exhibits leadership qualities and who is interested in internship opportunities. 4 F First Choice Scholars Award Basis: To an entering Freshman with a high GPA who exhibits high academic potential, who selects SIUE as their first choice to attend. Fowler Scholarship in Business Basis: To a full-time, undergraduate student who is a declared Business major and who has been accepted into the School of Business, who is in good academic standing; and from Madison County, Illinois. Sponsor: James C. Fowler Award: $3,000 F Al & Delores Hagemann Scholarship Basis: To an incoming freshman with stated preference for a business major; financial need; GPA of 3.0; residency in Macoupin or Madison County. Heitz MBA Scholarship Basis: To a student working toward an MBA degree who currently is working for a small- to mid-cap company, or has a personal interest in becoming a key member of an entrepreneurial small- to mid-cap company, or has a personal interest in becoming an entrepreneur. Heitz, MBA 69 Award: $3,500 C T Jerome Hollenhorst Scholarship Basis: To an undergraduate student in their second or third year of study with a minimum 2.5 GPA, who is employed 25 hours per week. Hollenhorst* Trust C T Hortica Insurance & Employee Benefits Scholarship Basis: To a full-time student in his/herr sophomore or junior year, pursuing a degree in business or management information systems with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0. Student must exhibit leadership qualities and be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident alien lawfully residing in the U.S. The scholarship is renewable up to six semesters. Sponsor: Hortica Insurance & Employee Benefits Award: $2,000 G Jensen Baeske Group Scholarship Basis: To a graduate student earning an MBA or MS in Economics/Finance who has a high GPA. Leonard Scholarship Basis: To a worthy student majoring in Business. Sponsor: Family, friends, & colleagues of John W. Leonard* C T Messing Family Scholarship Basis: To a student from an underrepresented population majoring in Business with an overall minimum GPA of 2.75, with an ACT score of 23 or more, who ranked in the upper 25% of his/her high school class. Phillips Study Abroad Memorial Scholarship Basis: To a student with a minimum 3.0 GPA who plans to apply and study abroad within 12 months of the scholarship application deadline. Student must have been accepted in a School of Business Study Abroad or Travel Study Program before award is presented. Student must submit an essay explaining why he/she wishes to study abroad. 5 C T Rotary Club of Edwardsville Scholarship Basis: To a student who is a full-time, declared Business major with junior or senior status, a minimum overall GPA of 3.0, and a graduate from any high school in the Edwardsville School District #7. Preference is given to a traditional student. If the recipient is a junior, the scholarship may be renewed for a total of four semesters. Sponsor: The Rotary Club of Edwardsville Award: $6,000 F William & Florence Schmidt Memorial Scholarship Basis: To a freshman planning to major in Business who has a minimum 2.5 GPA, and who was involved in extracurricular activities in high school. Recipient may continue to receive the scholarship for up to 8 semesters by maintaining full-time status and a 2.5 GPA. Sponsor: John F. Schmidt, William E. Schmidt Foundation Award: $2,000 C T Waterways Management Scholarship Basis: To a declared Business major who resides in Illinois or Missouri, with an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher, a minimum of 60 semester hours completed, and involvement in extracurricular or public-service activities. Recipient may continue to receive the scholarship in his or her senior year by maintaining a 3.0 GPA.
