3 II. About Internship-for-Credit Courses All internship courses are controlled admission classes, requiring approval for registration, for students who are interested in obtaining career-relevant experience. The student must meet the criteria listed below to the satisfaction of the internship coordinator or the chair of the department/major for which the student seeks internship credit. Some experiences may count for credit in the major, while others will allow the student to earn general elective credit, both of which count for credit toward the degree. Students should meet with an academic advisor (107 BSA or A310 BSA) to determine how an internship will fit into their curriculum. The College of Business Administration offers for-credit internship course options in the following areas: Accounting (Undergrad & Grad) Business Management Computer Information Systems (CIS) Economics (Undergrad & Grad) Entrepreneurship Finance Marketing/Managerial Marketing MBA (see MBA packet) Sales General Business Experience III. Student Eligibility Each department/major has unique and specific requirements for enrollment in the internship course. In general, to receive major credit for an internship the student must be at least a junior (60+ credit hours) in good standing have at least a 2.5 cumulative GPA and be declared in the major/minor for which credit is sought. It is typical that a minimum major GPA of 3.0 is also required. General elective credit is available to freshmen and sophomore students, as well as juniors and seniors in multidisciplinary internships, through BUS 2/ Students should seek guidance from the Office of Business Experiences (300E BSA) when assistance is needed in determining GPA or curricular eligibility. Specific departmental/major requirements are as follows: Department/Major Available Internship Course # Credit Hours for Internship Minimum Cumulative GPA Minimum Major GPA Accounting (undergrad) ACCT All attempts count Accounting (graduate) ACCT All attempts count Business Management MIS Computer Information Systems MIS Economics (undergrad) ECON Economics (graduate) ECON Entrepreneurship ENTR Finance FIN Marketing/Managerial Marketing MKTG MBA BAD Sales MKTG General Internship in Business BUS Prerequisites Courses ACCT 23020, 23021, and one other ACCT course at level ACCT 33012, or equivalent MIS 24053, MIS MIS ECON 32040, 32041, and one additional level ECON course in MA coursework 4 courses completed in MAE program See MBA application packet MKTG ENTR 27056, 27466; MKTG 25010; & 2 more courses at the 30/40000 level FIN 36053, and at least one of the following: 36058, 36059, or MKTG & at least 2 additional MKTG/MMTG courses completed prior to beginning internship Business Major or Minor
4 IV. Employer Eligibility 1. The position should be with an organization which typically hires college graduates into entry-level positions. That is, the responsibilities, supervision, and training provided to the intern should be comparable to that which new hires in the organization typically receive. 2. The employer can be either a profit or a non-profit. It must have an individual knowledgeable about the subject (i.e. finance, marketing) who is willing to function as the intern s supervisor. 3. The student must work between hours (300 hours required for accounting). The preference is that the intern should be paid at least the prevailing minimum wage, with the possibility of exceptions. 4. A supervisory representative of the employing firm must provide a formal job offer, in writing, as well as confirmation that he or she is willing to evaluate the intern s performance. 5. The student must obtain the internship coordinator s approval prior to commencing employment, as NOT ALL POSITIONS WILL BE APPROVED. V. Obtaining an Internship Position The student is responsible for securing an appropriate internship, although assistance may be provided by the Department, the Office of Business Experiences or by the Career Services Center. During your search: Tap into your own network (parents, peers, friends of parents, parents of friends, past employers, faculty, etc.). Research available internships posted on the Business Experiences listserv and Experience Job and Internship Board. Have your resume critiqued. Participate in a mock interview. Familiarize yourself with for-credit internship eligibility and curriculum requirements. Internships, specific to business majors, are posted regularly on the Business Experiences listserv by the Office of Business Experiences. Undergraduate majors are automatically added to the list at the beginning of each semester. Graduate students may request to join the list by ing [email protected]. Students are encouraged to create an account on the Kent State Experience Job and Internship Board available via A resume must be uploaded to complete registration. Resume critiques and mock interviews are available in the Career Services Center (261 Schwartz Center), and are highly recommended. Academic advisors (undergraduate- 107 BSA; graduate- A310 BSA) can assist you with determining your eligibility by way of assisting with GPA calculations, verifying course prerequisites, and translating curriculum requirements.
