TR Trench Rescue Certification Course This course will train personnel in methods and operations related to trench collapses and rescue operations. Chemistry of Hazardous Materials This is an 80-hour course needed in combination with a 92-hour Hazardous Materials Technician Course to obtain State of NC Hazardous Materials Level II (Technician) Certification. Fire Instructor II Certification This course meets the objectives in Chapter 4 of NFPA 1021 and covers the knowledge, skills and abilities needed to serve as an entry-level fire department company officer. Tropics include making the transition to officer; fire prevention; investigation; strategies and tactics; leadership; conflict resolution; community involvement; and communication. May 7-10; 8am-7pm (Spring) October 17, 18, 24, 25; 8am-7pm (Fall) 9. NC Rapid Intervention Team (NC Certification) This course will teach students all three required courses for the North Carolina Rapid Intervention Team (NCRIT) Certification training: 1)FIP-6401 NCRIT-Mayday; 2) FIP-6402 NCRIT-Firefighter Survival; and 3) FIP-6403 NCRIT-Rapid Intervention. May 12, 13, 19, 20; 8am-7pm (Summer) 10. CHIEF 101 This class will satisfy the 9s inspection criteria as specified by the North Carolina Administrative Code. The primary objective of the course is to inform current and future chief officers of the various aspects and complexities surrounding the operations and organization of North Carolina fire departments. Emphasis will be placed on ratings and inspections, NFIRS reporting, prevention and grant programs, basic line-of-duty death information, financial considerations, and an overview of the various aspects of being a chief officer. TR Ropes Certification Course This class will present to the Rescue Technician the entire Rescue Technician Ropes Course including Site Operations, Anchors, Mechanical Advantage Systems, Fixed Rope Systems, Lowers and Raises, Rope Highlines, and Victim Removal. May and 28-30; 8am-7pm (Summer) August 10, 11, 12, 17, 18, 19, 25, 26; 8am-7pm (Fall) 6

7 12. Hazardous Materials Specialties These courses are new specialties branching from Level One Responder. All currently certified HAZMAT Awareness and Operations personnel are eligible for these classes. Protective Equipment/PPE Decontamination Air Monitoring/Sampling June 4-5; 9am-4pm June 11-12; 8am-5pm June 18-19; 8am-5pm 13. Summer Firefighter Academy 2012 The purpose of this Academy is to produce high quality firefighters who will strengthen the ability of fire protection service in order to provide a higher degree of customer service. A mandatory orientation will be held June 10 at 2pm. Classes will begin June 11 at 8am and run Monday-Friday. A complete schedule will be provided at the orientation. The Academy will end August 10 with a graduation ceremony. Topics covered will be Firefighter I and II courses; Hazardous Materials; Rapid Intervention Team Certification; Physical Training; and Live Fire Scenarios. Candidates must complete an application packet to be accepted into the Academy. There are a limited number of seats and NO walk-ins will be accepted. A few local fire departments have agreed to allow candidates to be housed at fire stations. A $175 non-refundable fee is required for student supplies including textbooks, uniforms, and other supplies. The fee is not due until acceptance into the Academy. Topics include planning, presenting, and evaluating lesson plans; learning styles; use of media; communications; and other related topics. August 13-15; 8am-6pm (Fall) 22. Trailer Towing Operations (B.A.T./Big Awkward Trailers) This class, taught by Claude Huffman, will teach students to properly and safely handle the trailers that are fast becoming common place in the fire/rescue service. Driving, backing, loading, etc. will be covered. August 14, 9am-1pm; August 15, 9am-6pm 23. ASSESSMENT CENTER CLASS The purpose of the Assessment Center course is to familiarize personnel with the understanding and process of an Assessment Center, and use the information learned to better prepare for the promotion process. Items covered will be: First Day (1) History of assessment centers; (2) Overview of assessment centers; (3) Purpose of assessment centers; (4) Different approaches to assessment centers; (5) Definition of dimensions; (6) Dimensions used in Emergency Service Assessment Centers; (7) 9

10 How dimensions are rated; (8) How to prepare for an Assessment Center; (9) What to do before the assessment center, during the assessment center, and after the assessment center. Second Day-Oral Interviews Students will participate in an actual assessment center process using actual assessors and rating forms. Depending on number of students, this session may have an evening session. Third Day-In Basket and Oral Interview Reviews The morning of the third day will be used to complete the student participation in a IN-Basket process, and the rest of the day is to critique the process and to meet with each student individually and review their score and comments of the Oral Interview. September 8, 9, 15, 16; 8am-6pm (Fall) 25. Chief 101 This class will offer some insight into paperwork and other issues facing today s fire departments. There will be a heavy emphasis on benefits from the State Firemen s Association, the Firemen s and Rescue Squad Worker s Pension Fund, the PSOB, Worker s Compensation and the State of NC. This class is designed to be beneficial to all firefighters. September 12-13; 9am-4pm (Fall) 26. There is a $200 materials fee for each student. October 1-5 and 8-12; 8am-7pm (Fall) 30. TR Confined Space Rescue This course will train personnel in methods and operations related to rescue in confined space situations. It will also cover OSHA related standards. 12 31. North Carolina Thermal Imaging School This course is an advanced, interactive school designed to train firefighters on the technology, uses, and limitations of thermal imaging cameras. The school will consist of an evening classroom lecture covering thermal imaging technology, operational terms, uses, limitations, as well as troubleshooting and maintenance of thermal imagers. A large portion of the school will consist of hands on training evolutions designed to present the student with opportunities to learn how to use thermal imagers on a variety of emergency situations. The School will cover various TIC technologies; using TIC with V.E.S.; large area search techniques; using TICs for overhaul; recognizing various building components utilizing a TIC; non-fire emergency TIC use; using TICs with size-up; TIC limitations. There is a $75 fee payable to Cleveland Community College upon acceptance. Please see enclosed flyer. Please apply online after June 3 at Thermal Imaging.asp. Dates: October 26, 27, Fire Officer I and II (Combination Course) at Waco Volunteer Fire Department Dates: November 8, 29; December 1, 13; January 10, 17, 19, 24, 31; February 2, 7, 21, 28 All classes are 6pm-10pm with the exception of December 1 and January 19 which are 8am-5pm Cleveland County Fire/Rescue College November 9, 10, TR-Water Rescue Crossover Program This course is to provide a temporary crossover program that allows students and instructors who have participated in an NFPA 1006-compliant Water Rescue course to gain certification and/or qualification in North Carolina s TR-Water Rescue Program. November NC TR Technical Ropes Rescue Technician with added Basic High Angle Medical Specialist This course is designed to meet and exceed the NC requirements for TR Rope Rescue with a heavy focus on the medical injuries that occur in the high-angle environment and their treatments. TR Wilderness Rescue This course will present the Technical Rescuer with the knowledge, skills, and ability to satisfy the requirements of Chapter Sixteen (Wilderness) of NFPA 1006: Standard for Technical Rescue Professional Qualifications. Classes included in the course are: Rescue Operations for Wilderness, Rescue Rigging, Navigation, Tracking, and Victim Management. December 1, 2, 8, 9, 15, 16; 8am-7pm (Fall) 37. TR Agricultural Machinery Rescue This course will detail methods and techniques used in rescue of victims who have been injured or trapped while using various agricultural machinery. December 11-14; 8am-5pm (Fall) 38. Advanced High Angle Medical Specialist This course builds on the skills taught in our basic course with additional instruction in advanced physiologies. During the 5-day course, students will participate in various real world technical rescue exercises where all aspects of patient care will be addressed. 14 Registration Information for EMT-Basic, EMT-Intermediate, and EMT-Paramedic Please note registration dates for all classes. Registration days are Monday thru Thursday from 8 am 4 pm. If you need to register on Friday, please call to schedule a time to come in. The pre-requisites for EMT Basic are high school diploma or GED, or at least 17 years of age (and attending high school). If you are under 18 you are required to have a current Dual Enrollment form signed by your high school principal. AHA Healthcare Provider (CPR) In this classroom-based course, healthcare professionals learn to recognize several life-threatening emergencies, provide CPR to victims of all ages, use an AED, and relieve choking in a safe, timely and effective manner. Students must arrive at class with the AHA Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers Student Text. The text is available for purchase in the College Bookstore. Students will not be admitted without the student text! NC Fire/Rescue/EMS personnel are fee exempt for this course. Students wanting to claim the fee exemption should bring a letter to the class from the Chief or Training Officer of their department which shows affiliation with that particular department, as well as documented need of class for job classification. Registration Fee: $65.00 AHA Certification Card: $5.00 Classes will be held at the Brown Emergency located at 2423 Kings Road, Shelby, NC All classes are 6pm-10pm. 5/7/2012 AHA Heartsaver First Aid, CPR & AED This is a basic First Aid and CPR class. This course is not suitable for those healthcare providers requiring AHA Healthcare Provider CPR certification. Students must arrive at class with the AHA Heartsaver First Aid CPR & AED student manual. The text is available for purchase in the College Bookstore. Students will not be admitted without the student text! NC Fire/Rescue/EMS personnel as well as Public School System personnel are fee exempt for this course. Students wanting to claim fee exemption should bring a letter to the class from the Chief or Training Officer of their department stating affiliation, as well as documented need of the class as part of their functional job description. 16 Anatomy & Physiology (EMS 3000) M/Th Day Class Class starts 04/30/2012 and ends 05/31/2012. Registration Fee: $175 This course provides a basic study of the structure and function of the human body. Topics include a basic study of the body systems as well as an introduction to homeostasis, cells, tissues, nutrition, acid-base balance, and electrolytes. 80 hours. This class meets the Anatomy & Physiology requirement for entry into EMT-P classes as pre or co-requisite. Instructor: Glynn Lookabill. EMT-Basic to Paramedic Course M/Th Day Class Class starts 06/04/2012 and ends 05/30/2013 Registration Fee: $175 (Additional fees will apply to clinical for this class.) This course builds upon skills and assessments learned in the EMT-Basic course, and transitions students to be able to provide advanced level care. Topics include, but are not limited to, anatomy and physiology; advanced airway management; IV therapy and emergency drug therapy; cardiolog;, EKG interpretation; and medical and trauma patient assessment. Students will have vast opportunities for hands on experience in the clinical setting. Students who have an affiliation with a fire department or EMS agency in North Carolina are fee exempt for registration. 17 EMT-Basic Day Course (Rookie Class) M-F (Various end times, usually 17:30) Class starts: June 4 th & ends July 7th, Registration Fee: $175 This course introduces basic emergency medical care. Topics include preparatory, airway, patient assessment, medical emergencies, trauma, infants and children, and operations. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to achieve North Carolina State or National Registry EMT-Basic certification. Students must complete a reading placement test the first night of class. Student prerequisites: High school diploma or GED and successful completion of reading exam at 10 th grade level. If student is under 18 years of age, he/she must be attending high school and provide a Cleveland Community College Dual Enrollment form stating the high school he/she is attending and courses taken.
