3 Fire Fighter Training Level 1 & 2 Training (NFPA 1001) Online Delivery This essential training meets the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1001 standard and requirements for Fire Fighter Level I & II. There are 26 courses included that encompass general skills and knowledge requirements: fire department communications; fireground operations; rescue operations; and prevention, preparedness and maintenance, as outlined in the NFPA standard. Participants learn online; written and practical exams are arranged as required. This course is designed for anyone who, in the course of their work, may be faced with a hazardous materials incident. This course provides the information necessary to recognize, identify and the notification of a hazardous materials incident. 4 Incident Command System (ICS) I-200 This online training is intended to define the unique features that make ICS a true management system and expand on the information provided in I-100 training. This course is designed for any personnel likely to assume a supervisory position within the Incident Command System. Topics covered: Principles and Features of ICS, Organizational Overview, General Staff Functions, Incident Facilities, Incident Resources, and Common Responsibilities. To successfully complete the course, learners must achieve 80% or higher on the exam. 5 Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) This online course enables the user to have an understanding of each part of the TDG Regulations and how it applies to them and the dangerous goods they handle. Topics covered: Introduction, Responsibilities, Training, Classification, Documentation, Safety Marks, Means of Containment, Accidental Releases, Special Cases, Special Situations, and Inspection Learners will be required to complete each lesson and the exercises included, prior to moving on to the next lesson. To successfully complete the course learners must achieve 80% or higher on the exam. 6 Fire Apparatus Driver/Operator Part 1 (NFPA 1002) Designed for emergency personnel required to drive and/or operator a fire apparatus, this course will cover NFPA 1002 material including preventative and routine apparatus maintenance, defensive driving techniques, and applicable driving law regulations. Participants successfully completing Parts 1 and 2 will be Pro Board certified as qualified fire apparatus drivers/operators. 8 Confined Space Rescue Levels 1 & 2 (NFPA 1006) Upon the successful completion of this 4-day course, emergency responders will have the skills and knowledge in the areas of confined space rescue operations, utilizing appropriate equipment, methodologies, protocols, and patient and resource management techniques. This curriculum meets and exceeds requirements for rescue training in accordance with WorkSafe BC Part 9 Confined Space. Due to the process of skills and written testing students must have completed NFPA 1006 Chapter 5 General Requirement Training. Due to the nature of this training, a physical examination is recommended prior to this course. Participants will complete up to a 4-hour practical evaluation course which covers the requisite skill portion of the NFPA 1031 Standard. Participants will complete a self-paced, online course which covers the requisite knowledge portion of the 1033 standard. Once the online portion of the course is completed participants will write the NFPA 1033 Requisite Knowledge exam. This exam is administered through a proctor at the student s location. The practical requirements of the course are conducted at one of the two participating Fire Training Centres, (Nanaimo or Langley) or arrangements may be able to be made for the testing to be conducted at the participant's location. Prerequisites: Candidates must be a member of a career fire department, volunteer fire department, recognized industrial brigade, RCMP or municipal police or a related investigative agency. 11 Fire Service Instructor Level 2 (NFPA 1041) This three-day course is designed to place an emphasis on teaching from formalized lesson plans prepared by the instructor, including integrating information from one lesson or class to the next. The participants will develop lesson plans and practice teaching skills during in-class project presentations. This course utilizes traditional interactive lecture, student presentation, discussions and pre-course assignments. The seven modules of this course are: Writing Performance Objectives Developing Lesson Plans Preparing Instructional Materials Constructing Evaluation Devices Demonstrating Selected Teaching Methods Managing Training Records and Reports Identifying Reference Resources. There is a specific focus on operations within the Incident Command System (ICS) as a Safety Officer. The participant will be able to identify and analyze safety concerns as they relate to all-hazards scene evaluation, and communicate recommended solutions to the Incident Commander. This has been accomplished by blending the very latest concepts in adult education with the experiences of a team of seasoned and dynamic educators. This has resulted in an interactive program in which information becomes knowledge, skills, and beliefs through facilitated discussion, active learning techniques, and multimedia rather than traditional lecture. A resource manual has been created which explains new and important concepts in plain language. There has been an explosion of knowledge in the field of pre-hospital care and this manual brings these important concepts home to the First Responder community. 11

12 This helps to bridge the gap between First Responders and Paramedics which leads to improved patient outcomes and more professional interactions between agencies. Prerequisites: CPR 'C' Reference Manual: VIERA First Responder Manual ($95) Tuition: $1250 First Responder Instructor/Evaluator Instructional Techniques Workshop This 3-day workshop explores the new Enhanced First Responder concepts and supports the Instructor/Evaluator by ensuring a firm grasp on the content in the new program and providing answers to the frequently asked questions from students. The workshop focuses on dynamic and effective learning strategies which engage the learner while introducing the instructor to the psychology of learning. Successful students will be certified as VIERA Instructor/Evaluators and qualified to instruct and/or evaluate the new VIERA First Responder curriculum. Successful candidates will also be recognized by EMA licensing as an approved First Responder Instructor/Evaluator. At the completion of the course students will be presented with a comprehensive lesson plan for the new Enhanced First Responder curriculum complete with Instructor Notes, PowerPoint Presentations and Videos. In this classroom-based workshop, students will be challenged to demonstrate the instructional and evaluation skills and they will receive informative feedback from their instructors and peers. Successful candidates will have their VIERA First Responder Instructor/Evaluator status extended for another 3 years. 13 Fire Dynamics This exciting 1-day program is a detailed analysis of the changing fire dynamics due to modern lightweight building construction and synthetic fuel loads. We compare legacy and modern lightweight building construction and the impact it has on fire fighting operational timeframes. This program looks at how modern furnishings are made, the synthetic materials they are made of and how it has drastically changed fire behavior. We will investigate survivability profiling and the risk to benefit analysis. This program will also show the firefighter the benefits of Positive Pressure Ventilation Attack and how it can greatly improve the environment we work in when we responding to structure fires. Course delivery will include interactive classroom presentation and practical demonstrations. Prerequisite: None Reference Manual: Handouts provided Tuition: $275 AED/CPR This course teaches the lifesaving skills of one rescuer using AED and CPR. The Heart and Stroke Foundation s CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) curriculum is used and includes AED (automated external defibrillator) training. The course includes relief of choking in adults and, at the student s option, in children and infants, along with barrier device/pocket mask use. Students learn to recognize and treat emergencies such as cardiac arrest, heart attack and stroke. Students who successfully complete this course will receive a Heart and Stroke Heartsaver course completion card. Prerequisite: None Reference Manual: HSFC BLS for Healthcare Provider student manual Tuition: $60 AED/CPR Instructor The Heartsaver Instructor Course has two modules - the Core Instructor Course and the specific module on Heartsaver course delivery and materials. The Core Instructor Course (CIC) is a foundation course required by all Heart and Stroke Foundation instructor candidates. This course is comprised of a pre-learning online module, as well as an in-class module. The CIC teaches instructor candidates how to apply effective communication techniques, manage the classroom environment, and promote knowledge and skill transfer and retention. The specific Heartsaver module introduces the student to the educational materials and syllabus utilized in the delivery of the Heart and Stroke Foundation Heartsaver CPR/AED provider course. Students who successfully complete this course will receive a Heart and Stroke Heartsaver Instructor course completion card. 13

Reference Manual: Handouts provided Tuition: $275 Fireground Management for the Interior Team Leader This interactive 2-day course is in compliance with the new Office of the Fire Commissioner's Playbook for the Interior Team Leader requirements. The Team Leaders will be introduced to the concepts of critical decision-making skills during high risk, low frequency emergency situations. The students will be rotated through simulated structure fire scenarios (both in the classroom and in a Training Centre facility) to allow them the opportunity to practice the concepts learned in the classroom. Interior Leaders will be required to: conduct a 360 size-up with the Incident Commander (IC) participate in developing an Incident Action Plan with the IC use ICS to supervise all personnel assigned to him or her check in fire fighters that are assigned to his or her group/division while operating interior continuously monitor and size-up interior conditions provide situation reports to the IC as required make critical tactical decisions based on interior fire behaviour injects as supplied by an instructor. Scenarios will be debriefed as a group to reinforce what went well and what could be done better. This training is designed to be open and interactive to provide a safe learning environment to promote group discussion throughout. 15 VIERA Evaluator Workshop This 8-hour course is for anyone in the fire service interested in evaluating any Vancouver Island Emergency Response Academy courses. Evaluators must be individuals with knowledge, skills and experience in the firefighting profession. The process of evaluation requires the evaluator to be fully conversant with the skills and knowledge required to properly and safely complete the job performance requirements. Prerequisites: Fire Service Instructor 1 Certification (NFPA 1041) or equivalent Five (5) year s service, in a career Fire Department or eight (8) years service in a volunteer Fire Department Incident Safety Officer Certification (NFPA 1521) Certified to the NFPA standards an individual is to evaluate Reference Manual: Handouts provided Tuition: $100 PREREQUISITES: Proof of completion of pre-requisite training by certificate or transcript must be provided upon registration.
