3 Description: To fulfill the 24 CORE credits required by the NJ DOH for recertification with the new standards. Lecture, practical and testing for the EMT. American Heart Association BLS for Health Care Providers (4.5 hours) Course Number: Description: When performed quickly enough, CPR can save lives in such emergencies; heart attacks, electric shock, drowning, excessive bleeding, drug overdose, and other conditions in which there is no breathing or no pulse. The purpose of CPR is to bring oxygen to the victim s lungs and to keep blood circulating so oxygen gets to every part of the body. When a person is deprived of oxygen, permanent brain damage can begin in as little as four minutes and death can follow only minutes later. The BLS for Healthcare Providers course covers core material such as adult and pediatric CPR (including two-rescuer scenarios and use of the bag masks), foreign body airway obstruction, and automated external defibrillation. Emergency Pediatric Care (16 hours) Course Number: A Description: Emergency Pediatric Care (EPC) is a comprehensive education program for EMS practitioners on the care of sick and injured children, addressing a full spectrum of emergency illnesses, injuries and scenarios that an EMS practitioner might encounter. This is a NAEMT developed course. NAEMT s Emergency Pediatric Care (EPC) course focuses on the care of sick and injured children, addressing a full spectrum of emergency illnesses, injuries and scenarios that an EMS practitioner might encounter. The course provides an indepth understanding of the pathophysiology of the most common pediatric emergency issues, and stresses critical thinking skills to help practitioners make the best decisions for their patients.

4 EPC uses the Pediatric Assessment Triangle (PAT) as a tool to help practitioners rapidly and accurately assess pediatric patients and incorporates family centered care throughout all scenarios. Training encompasses lectures, hands-on skills practice and small group critical thinking discussions. Topics include: understanding kids; airway, breathing and oxygenation; cardiac emergencies; child abuse and neglect; common medical emergencies; the importance of family; hypoperfusion and shock; newborn resuscitation; pediatric trauma; and special health care needs. EPC is for all emergency medical technicians and paramedics committed to providing quality care for pediatric patients. Flexible course formats fit the continuing education needs of all EMS practitioners: traditional two-day face-to-face Provider Course, an accelerated two-day Provider-Instructor Course, and a Hybrid Course that combines eight hours of online training followed by one day of on-site interactive stations. This modular course format can fulfill the pediatric clinical and educational needs of an EMS agency while minimizing budgetary and logistical impacts. Principles of Ethical and Personal Leadership (16 hours) Course Number: Description: Principles of Ethics and Personal Leadership (PEPL) provides EMS and Mobile Integrated Healthcare (MIH) practitioners at all levels with the skills they need to effectively interact with patients and their families, medical personnel, coworkers, supervisors and the community. Course topics include personal and professional core values, ethics, decisionmaking, duty to serve and conflict resolution. The Principles of Ethics and Personal Leadership (PEPL) is a new NAEMT course for EMS practitioners. This 16-hour course provides EMS and Mobile Healthcare (MHC) practitioners at all levels with the necessary knowledge and skills to errectively interact with patients and their families, other medical personnel, co-workers, supervisors and community residents at large.

5 The course covers topics and skills in the following areas: Personal and professional core values Ethics Decision-making Duty to serve Strategies for conflict resolution Ambassadorship for the profession, their agencies, and the community at large Through course presentation, dialogue, and learning activities, including written and video case studies, students will explore the importance of ethics and personal leadership, identify their leadership roles in civic life as individuals, family members, professionals, and members of the community, and practice the skills important to the exercise of personal, ethical leadership. Defensive Driving Course (Ambulance) C.E.V.O.III (8 hours) Course Number: Description: According to the National Safety Council, 4,767 ambulances were involved in crashes, resulting in 2, 416 injuries and fatalities during According to EMSresponder.com, ambulance drivers are twice as likely as law enforcement officers and three times more likely than firefighters to be killed while driving at work. The most dangerous part of the job for EMS is responding and returning from a call. Operating an ambulance requires specific knowledge, skills and attitudes that are unique to EMS and the ambulance. Increasing traffic and road speeds combine with poor ambulance operator

6 training and unpredictable passenger vehicle driver reactions to create increased damages, injuries and death from ambulance crashes. Coaching the Emergency Vehicle Operator 3: Ambulance adapts the National Safety Council s defensive driving techniques to the unique nature of ambulance work. Training drivers to navigate through traffic safely in both emergency and non-emergency situations. Vehicle Inspection/Preparation; Cushion of safety when driving an ambulance; on the road scenarios; Special consideration of specific collision producing situations as backing, and hydroplaning and Emergency driving.
