Included in this packet is information about the program curriculum, requirements, and application process. After reviewing this packet, if you have any questions, please contact Kent Spitler, Director of the Department for EMS Education, at or Curriculum Description The Emergency Medical Science curriculum provides individuals with the knowledge, skills and attributes to provide advanced emergency medical care as a paramedic for critical and emergent patients who access the emergency medical system and prepares graduates to enter the workforce. Students will gain complex knowledge, competency, and experience while employing evidence based practice under medical oversight, and serve as a link from the scene into the healthcare system. Graduates of this program may be eligible to take state and/or national certification examinations. Employment opportunities include providers of emergency medical services, fire departments, rescue agencies hospital specialty areas, industry, educational and government agencies. 2 Student Information The EMT course (EMS 110) is offered each semester. It is recommended that those who are entering the Paramedic Program, who are not currently certified as an EMT, to register for EMS 110 and Anatomy and Physiology I (BIO 168) as soon as possible; they are required to complete BIO 168 no later than the first fall semester of the program. Students with current EMT certification through continuing education may receive curriculum college credit for Emergency Medical Technician, EMS 110. There are two ways to receive credit for EMS 110: 1. Complete the NREMT exam and receive national registration as an EMT. Go to for information. The student must show proof of NREMT registration as an EMT to receive credit for EMS 110. Cost is $70 and the applicant must have successfully completed an EMT skills evaluation within the last 12 months. 2. Complete a Credit by Exam for EMS 110 by applying for a request to test. The student must show proof of successful completion and certification as an EMT in North Carolina. Contact the Department for EMS Education for information and testing. The cost to obtain credit by exam is $50. Paramedic Program Admission Process Step One: Admission to the College Contact the Admissions Department for College admission requirements. The student will complete placement testing, submit high school/ged transcripts, and attend the College orientation. Admission to the Paramedic Program is a separate process and instructions are listed in Step Two. Step Two: Admission to the Paramedic Program Meet the equivalent or take DMA 030. Meet the equivalent of DRE 098. An overall GPA minimum of 2.0 in college level coursework in related classes and core courses in the EMS program of study. Complete program application (separate from the College admissions application) Provide a copy of valid state driver s license (attach to program application) Application materials should be mailed to: Gaston College Department for EMS Education, Campus Box 10 Applications are accepted at any time, but are assigned to each program depending on space. 3 Step Three: After a Paramedic AAS Degree Program acceptance letter is received In addition to maintaining a 2.0 GPA and earning a minimum grade of "C" in all EMS and other related curriculum courses, applicants accepted in the Emergency Medical Science - Paramedic program must meet the following requirements in order to enroll and continue in the EMS program. 1. Attend a program orientation session. 2. Schedule to meet with a faculty advisor to register for classes 3. Complete a student Medical Form, provided by the Department for EMS Education, documenting satisfactory emotional and physical health. 4. Immunizations required by the N.C. Community College System and clinical agencies. Criminal Background Check, FBI fingerprinting, and random drug screening Clinical agencies reserve the right to deny a student access to the facility based on failure to meet the above requirements. If a student is denied access to any clinical agency, the student will not be allowed to continue in the Emergency Medical Science - Paramedic program. Detailed information regarding these agency requirements will be provided upon conditional acceptance into the paramedic program. Program Costs 1. In addition to tuition and textbooks, costs of this program include the following: EMS Testing, FISDAP Clinical Competency Tracking, uniforms (shirts, pants, shoes, and jacket), stethoscope, physical examination, immunizations, criminal background check, FBI fingerprinting, and drug screening at a time designated by the EMS faculty. 2. Students are responsible for their own transportation to and from all clinical, laboratory, and class activities. Clinical and EMS field internship experiences may be scheduled morning, afternoons, or evenings, and weekends. 3. Students who seek credit for EMT-Basic Certification, taken through continuing education, may request to seek course credit by examination or experiential credit. Experiential credit is obtained by successfully completing the NREMT computer adaptive testing and receiving subsequent national registration as an EMT.
