2 Course Credit Matrix Page 2 FIRE SCIENCE TECHNOLOGY (FST) COLLEGE CREDITS TRANSFER TO FIRE RESCUE CERTIFICATIONS Virginia Community College System (VCCS) Credits Virginia Department of Fire Programs (VDFP) Course/Certification Equivalents VDFP Course/Certification If you have: You will be awarded: Hazardous Materials Awareness FST112: Hazardous Materials Chemistry (3 Credits) Hazardous Materials Operations You will have to provide VDFP with proof of completion of your skills set before a certificate will be awarded. This is obtained outside of the community college system. You must be a certified Firefighter I II (Virginia equivalent) before you can take this course for state certification. FST 135: Fire Instructor I (3 Credits) Fire Instructor I To be able to teach in Virginia, you must provide VDFP with proof of completion of sixteen (16) additional hours of training outside of the community college system. You must be a certified Firefighter I II (Virginia equivalent) before you can take this course for state certification. FST 115: Fire Prevention (3 Credits) Fire Inspector I You must be a certified Firefighter I II (Virginia equivalent) before you can take this course for state certification. FST 100: Principles of Emergency Services (3 Credits) FST 115: Fire Prevention (3 Credits) FST 120: Occupational Safety Health (3 Credits) Fire Officer I You must be a certified Fire Instructor I (Virginia equivalent) before you can take this course for state certification. The community college system will administer the state test for certifications. You must apply to the VDFP for issuance of certificates. You must provide VDFP with proof of completion of the courses any additional documentation required.

Veterans will be awarded HLT/PED credit based on military service. EMT certification will substitute for this requirement. 3 Any 100 level math course will fulfill this requirement; however, MTH120 is not transferable math. For students who plan to transfer, MTH151 or another transferable math course is recommended. 4 This course, which must include a laboratory, may be selected from biology, chemistry, or physics. 5 Psychology sociology courses are recommended. For students who plan to transfer, the student should select social science courses that satisfy the requirements of the four-year institution they plan to attend. 6 If ENG131 was taken to satisfy the ENG112 requirement, an FST elective may be substituted.

The individual must present a copy of his/her certification card for credit to be awarded. 2 Credits will be granted awarded upon receipt review of appropriate documentation by Piedmont Virginia Community College. For credits to be awarded, the individual must be enrolled in the Virginia Community College System. 3 All applicable credits will be awarded for a two-year degree upon completion of General Education course requirements through the Virginia Community College System.
