2 DISSERTATION Influence of Childhood Environments on Consumer Behavior Committee: Vladas Griskevicius (Chair), Akshay A. Rao, Deborah R. John, Jeffry A. Simpson I examine how growing up poor versus wealthy influences consumer behavior in adulthood. Previous findings show that growing up in resource-deprived conditions is associated with poor judgment and decision making. I develop a model to identify when people who grew up poor make better decisions. I show that people who grew up poor can make better health decisions and be better planners compared to those who grew up wealthy. But these positive effects of adverse childhoods emerge only under specific conditions. For example, people who grew up poor made better health decisions when they were provided information about the likelihood of getting sick in conditions of financial threat. In addition to showing how specific features of our childhood environment have long-lasting effects on choices in adulthood, my dissertation points to ways of improving decision making for individuals who grew up poor. Essay 1: Silver Spoons and Platinum Plans: How Childhood Environment Affects Adult Healthcare Decisions (Under review, Journal of Consumer Research, Job Market Paper) How does socioeconomic status in childhood influence desire for health coverage in adulthood? I develop and test a model that shows that the effect of childhood environment on medical coverage manifested especially in response to a financial threat. When financially threatened, people who grew up poor were generally less interested in medical coverage compared to those who grew up wealthy regardless of current wealth. This effect was driven by differences in risktaking among people from different socioeconomic backgrounds. In addition, I show that this effect reverses when people are provided with base-rate information about a health-risk. When information about the average likelihood of getting sick is made available, people who grew up poor were more likely to seek medical coverage than people who grew up wealthy. Again, this effect was observed only when people were exposed to a financial threat, and was driven by differences in risk perception among people from different backgrounds. Essay 2: Influence of Childhood Environments on Planning Behavior (In preparation to be submitted to the Journal of Marketing Research) This paper examines how childhood environments affect planning psychology and behavior. I propose that the effect of childhood environment on planning would be different depending on whether motivational (e.g. propensity to plan) or volitional (e.g. task completion self-efficacy) processes were activated. Results show that although people growing up rich had a greater motivation to plan compared to people growing up poor, people growing up rich also consistently exhibited a planning fallacy by underestimating the time it would take them to carry out future tasks. Additionally, the effects of childhood environment on planning were observed only under conditions of financial threat. These findings suggest that the effects of childhood environment on planning may be dormant until people experience financial distress later in life and may sometimes work against each other.
