1 Research Administrators Network RAN Newsletter The Education Issue Who says GCP Training is only for clinicians! Good Clinical Practice Training or GCP is a valuable way for non-clinical research administrators to gain knowledge on technical requirements for clinical trials. Good Clinical Practice (GCP) is an international ethical and scientific quality standard for designing, conducting, recording and reporting trials that involve the participation of human subjects. Compliance with this standard provides public assurance that the rights, safety and well-being of trial subjects are protected, consistent with the principles that have their origin in the Declaration of Helskinki and that the clinical trial data are credible. The objective of the ICH GCP Guideline is to provide a unified standard for the European Union (EU), Japan and the United States to facilitate the mutual acceptance of clinical data by the regulatory authorities in these jurisdictions. The guideline was developed with consideration of the current good clinical practices of the European Union, Japan and the United States as well as those of Australia, Canada, the Nordic countries and the World Health Origination (WHO). For further reading on GCP please go to ICH website at Issue 4 The Education Issue July 2014 Inside this issue: GCP Training 1 On-line Learning 2 On-Line Learning 3 Database Courses & International Studies Personal Development Awards, Grants & Scholarships AEA Auckland Conference Introduce Yourself 8 The Back Page 9 If you would like to test your knowledge on GCP training please go to the following link. 5 Issue 4 The Education Issue The extra bit..personal Development Page 5 Do you work to live, or live to work? These days we juggle work, home and family and lets face it, some days can be a struggle. Emphasis is put on our professional development, how we cope at work, our qualifications, management style, meeting deadlines amongst other work related stresses and issues. But what about our personal lives? How do we cope with pressures put on us by family, home and friends. Do you take your work home with you each evening? Your work life can also impact your home life so a balance is important to keep us happy, healthy and focussed. So how do we balance work and home? Searching Google produces around 102,000,000 results. Searching every single link would rule out any home or work life completely so we should evaluate the basics. 1. Build downtime into your schedule 2. Drop activities that sap your time or energy 3. Rethink your errands 4. Get moving 5. Remember that a little relaxation goes a long way Source: How well do you balance your work with the other priorities in your life? Often, you may not even notice that you're not devoting as much time to your priorities as you would like. Take the quiz to gauge whether you've got a good balance, or if you need to make some changes The careersnz website offers a work-life balance quiz. Take the quiz at
6 RAN Newsletter The Education Issue Page 6 Awards, Grants and Scholarships Available Careers New Zealand is a great website to browse for information regarding scholarships, grants and awards to help fund your tertiary education. To get a scholarship you must meet certain criteria and can apply at different education levels from diploma to Masters degrees. Their website also lists polytechnics and institutes of technology that offer awards and scholarship programmes. Contact Careers New Zealand on NZQA Tertiary Education Information The New Zealand tertiary sector covers private training establishments (PTEs), institutes of technology and polytechnics (ITPs) wananga, universities and workplace training. These all deliver a variety of educational options, often in flexible ways to meet the needs of adult learners. NZQA acts as a quality assurance body and approves all qualifications for the above institutions, apart from universities. Tertiary education providers offer courses which range from transition (school to work) programmes, through to postgraduate study and research. There are no fixed divisions between the types of courses offered by each sort of provider. The focus is on their ability to offer education to the required quality standards, rather than based on their type. Higher, degree-level education is mainly offered at universities. Programmes are research-led and generally academic, as distinct from vocational. Vocational degree level education is offered at ITPs, wänanga and a few larger PTEs. Such degrees tend to be specific and applied. PTEs programmes are mostly in specific vocational niches at certificate and diploma level.
