Prof. Jenny Sharples / / INCUMBENT: Vacant / / APPROVED BY: Executive Dean Prof. Joanne Finkelstein / / Employee Relations USE ONLY: Classified on: / / OVERALL PURPOSE The overall purpose of the position of the Senior Lecturer in Psychology is to provide: teaching in clinical psychology areas; supervision of clinical psychology practice; supervision of research in the Masters and Doctor of Psychology (Clinical) programs; conduct research in a clinically related area, and create opportunities for external research and or commercial partnerships. The incumbent will be also be required to undertake undergraduate teaching and will have some administrative duties within the school. ORGANISATIONAL ENVIRONMENT Victoria University is a dual-sector, multi-campus University combining substantial activity in three faculties in Higher Education, two in Vocational Education and Victoria University College. The University has over 45,000 students, including more than 2,500 international students on-shore, over 4,000 off-shore, and a workforce of approximately 3,500 staff. The University currently offers courses at Postgraduate and Undergraduate degree, Advanced Diploma, Diploma and Certificate levels, and nonaward courses. There are several affiliated institutions in Melbourne s western region. Campuses of the University are located at Footscray Nicholson, Footscray Park, Melton, Newport, St Albans, Sunbury, Sunshine and Werribee as well as at four locations in the Melbourne Central Business District. The University has embarked on a major repositioning of its core teaching activities, in line with its commitment to Making Victoria University (VU) a New School of Thought, a project to be implemented over the period 2007 to Page 1 of 6
4 The New School of Thought project involves: involving industry in course design; producing job-ready graduates who have experienced work-place learning; providing personalised learning programs for students; revamping our approach to vocational education, and enhancing opportunities in the west of Melbourne. The School of Psychology is one of five Schools in the Faculty of Arts, Education and Human Development. Courses in the Faculty are designed to help students reach their creative and conceptual potential, to become expert problem-solvers, social critics and cultural leaders. These skills provide pathways into significant careers in town planning, psychology, public administration, social work, public relations, research, policy-making, librarianship, teaching, community development, writing and many other areas. The School teaches an APAC accredited undergraduate psychology sequence within a range of disciplinary areas. APAC accredited postgraduate programs are: Graduate Diploma in Psychology; Master/Doctor of Applied Psychology, Sport and Community professional streams; and Master/Doctor of Clinical Psychology. The School also supports a substantial cohort of students enrolled in Masters by Research and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. The Master of Psychology and Doctor of Psychology degrees in Clinical Psychology provide specialist training in professional psychology accredited by the Australian Psychological Accreditation Council (APAC). A life-span developmental framework is used to train graduates in a wide range of assessment and therapeutic techniques for use with children, adolescents and adults. The clinical psychology stream has an emphasis on a psychodynamic perspective but also provides students with training in other orientations such as cognitive behaviour therapy. The Masters degree requires two years full-time study while the Doctor of Psychology degree is three years of full-time study. Both programs include three interlocking strands of theoretical/knowledge base subjects, research subjects (including a thesis) and clinical practice. In regard to clinical practice Master of Psychology students are required to undertake one internal placement (Victoria University Psychology Clinic) and two external placements with an additional internship (80 days) for the Doctor of Psychology degree in the third year. The position is currently based at the St Albans campus with the likelihood of some teaching at the Footscray Park campus. The position may entail teaching at any present or future campus of Victoria University. The position may be relocated to any other existing or future campus of the University. Intercampus travel may be required. An Organisational Chart is attached. MAJOR CHALLENGES/ FREEDOM TO ACT This position reports to and receives broad direction from the Head of School of Psychology and operates within the University policies, procedures and guidelines. 5 A key challenge of the position will be to provide leadership in the teaching, research and administration of the Masters and Doctorate programs in clinical psychology. The courses are convened by the clinical Professor and the Level C Academic position will be expected to work closely and collaboratively with the convenor. The position involves undertaking and supervising research and involvement in the supervision of clinical practice through the Victoria University Psychology Clinic and student placement where appropriate. This will include engagement with relevant community organisations. A Level C Academic will make an independent and significant original contribution to the discipline of Psychology at the national level and will make a significant contribution to research and/or scholarship and/or teaching and administration activities of an organisational unit or an interdisciplinary area at undergraduate, honours and postgraduate level. In research and/or scholarship and/or teaching they will make original contributions, which expand knowledge or practice in their discipline and provide leadership in research, research training and supervision. A Level C Academic will play a major role or provide a significant degree of leadership in scholarly, research and/or professional activities relevant to the profession, discipline and/or community and maybe required to perform the full academic responsibilities of and related administration for the coordination of a large award program or a number of smaller award programs of the institution. MAJOR DUTIES PERFORMED In performing the following duties the incumbent is required to comply with quality assurance policies and procedures, and other relevant legislative requirements applicable to the University. The major duties performed are: 1. Initiate and develop subject materials to teach postgraduate classes in units in the clinical psychology programs and to undertake relevant teaching in the undergraduate program (ongoing). 2. Supervise students undertaking a Masters/ Doctoral research thesis and projects at Honours (ongoing). 3. Provide clinical supervision for students with clients in the Victoria University Psychology Clinic as part of the requirements of the Masters/ Doctor of Psychology (Clinical Psychology) degrees (as required). 4. Undertake administrative work associated with the running of the Victoria University Psychology Clinic (as required). 5. Arrange placements for Clinical Psychology students in the field (as required). 6. Independently conduct and disseminate research in areas of expertise (ongoing). Page 3 of 6

Participate in administrative duties such as; act as unit co-ordinator, act as course co-ordinator, attend school and/or faculty meetings, and/or membership of a number of committees (as required). 8. Independently prepare and deliver lectures and seminars, including tutorial coordination, marking, assessment and consultation with students (ongoing). 9. Adhere to and cooperate with all OHS policies and procedures of the University (ongoing). MAJOR ACCOUNTABILITIES The position reports to the Head of School of Psychology. The Level C Academic will work effectively in a changing and sometimes uncertain environment, and respond with creativity, resourcefulness and initiative. The Level C Academic will contribute to the growth and development of the School of Psychology and the University s Strategic Plan. The accountabilities will include the development, implementation and evaluation of teaching and research in the clinical psychology area. The appointee will be expected to contribute to research in clinical psychology in the school and develop strong relationships that link the school to the relevant external professional, community and government organisations. The Level C Academic will provide leadership in research including research training and supervision. SELECTION CRITERIA Essential: 1. Knowledge or Training: A doctoral level qualification (PhD or D Psych) in clinical psychology. 2. Eligibility for Membership of the College of Clinical Psychologists of the Australian Psychological Society. 3. Demonstrated clinical psychology expertise and experience. 4. Capacity to participate in course administration and curriculum development and tertiary teaching. 5. Recognised Supervisor status with the Psychologists Registration Board of Victoria or capacity to apply for such registration. 6. Demonstrated experience in supervising the clinical work of clinical psychologists and/or clinical Page 4 of 6
7 psychology graduate students. 7. Capacity to supervise masters and doctoral level clinical psychology research projects. 8. Demonstrated research capacity in areas related to the School s interests. 9. Demonstrated ability to work within a collaborative decision-making setting. 10. Awareness of OHS responsibilities and willingness to attend OHS training as required. 11.
