1 Information for International applicants The Postgraduate Diploma in Health Science is a 120 credit (one year full-time), interdisciplinary programme that provides the opportunity for qualiied health professionals and health service managers to develop advanced practice knowledge and critical analysis skills. Courses are characterised by advanced study in a speciic health science discipline, requiring a foundation of undergraduate knowledge and skills achieved through previous tertiary qualiications. AND MODE OF DELIVERY LEVEL 8 COURSES BRIEF DESCRIPTION CREDIT VALUE MN8.402 Advanced Pathophysiology for Health Professionals (I-D) This course builds upon undergraduate study and the knowledge embedded in practice. The course will explore complex adult and child disease processes in order to support advanced diagnostic reasoning and therapeutic interventions for these client groups. This course assumes knowledge of normal physiological function and directs the student towards a progressive and more critical understanding of altered, complex health states. MN8.405 Ethical Concepts and Legal Issues for Advanced Practice (I-D) This course advances knowledge and understanding of ethical and legal principles associated with health care. Students explore questions and relect on issues concerning the equity and appropriateness of health care services. MN8.408 Health Services Management (I-D) This course is intended for those working in health service management and those considering the possibility of a management role. It is anticipated that students participating in this course are able to apply their knowledge and skills to their chosen area of practice. Students will be encouraged to identify and relect upon the legal and regulatory requirements for health service management as well as the quality management ramiications arising from these.
3 MN8.410 Advancing Specialty Practice (I-D) This course provides opportunities for participants to critically appraise and relect upon individual and organisational healthrelated service provision, and to develop strategies for enhancing practice within a specialised area. MN8.414 Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (I-D) Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) is a practice-based course designed to enable a broad range of health and social service professionals to develop specialist advanced skills in CBT. The integrated use of theory, practice, and professional supervision from a clinical perspective will enable learners to critique and deliver therapeutic services for inpatient, outpatient, or community settings within the New Zealand context. 60 MN8.416 Clinical Supervision in the Health Professions (I-D) Professional supervision is a formalised relective practice. It provides for the sharing of experiences, particularly to surface conlicts, tensions and ethical issues in professional practice. It is an important process that supports the development and maintenance of high quality practice, both for health and social service professionals and for clients. This course assists the practitioner to develop knowledge and skills for professional supervision. It is also relevant for those participating in, or who want to understand the supervision process. MN8.419 **Advanced Supervision Practice (I-D) This course builds on the knowledge and practice skills developed in Clinical Supervision in the Health Professions. Using current theories, models and approaches to supervision this course provides an opportunity for critical relection on, and enhancement of, practice. MN8.423 Operational Management for Health Services (I-D) This course is intended for those already working in health service management as well as those considering the possibility of an operational management role. The course provides an overview of current operational management practices that are relevant to Health Services. Students participating in this course will have the opportunity to apply their knowledge and skills in a critical way to their chosen area of practice. The course consists of several key areas in operational management. It provides the opportunity for the health professional to critically discuss and appraise operational management in health services. This course requires the health professional to relect upon, evaluate and record their personal journey of development in operational health management practices and processes. MHS8.424 **Integrated Disease Management (I-D) This course provides an in-depth review of adult disease management, its impact on health care provision and the need for integrated care across all health disciplines and services. Students will relect on disease management as a complete, rather than fragmented, approach to care, with an emphasis on risk assessment and early intervention that focuses on reducing morbidity in individuals with chronic illness. Teaching and learning approaches in the course allow students to examine disease management from their own professional, clinical, contextual and service orientations, thus allowing them to develop clinical and professional leadership skills commensurate with their scope and level of clinical practice. MHS8.425 Child and Family Health in Interdisciplinary Practice (I-D) Advances in health care are initiating changes from an individual/person paradigm to the health care of families as a whole (Kaakinen et al., 2010). Arising from this starting point, this course draws on knowledge of the child/tamariki, youth/rangatahi and families/whänau. The child/youth within the family as the centre of health care will be examined and explored from a wide range of perspectives and disciplines. MHS8.426 Health and an Aging Population (I-D) This course recognises the diversity of the age group and the complex relationship between determinants of health, health status and well-being. With the steady increase in the number of older people in the population, it has been recognized that this cohort requires additional support and services to enable appropriate assessment, planning and delivery of care with an emphasis on aging in place The course examines the scope of independent/collaborative practice in relation to health promotion, maintenance and restoration of health, preventative care, rehabilitation and/or palliative care and encourages the generation of new approaches to the delivery of expert care in diferent settings. MHS8.427 Interdisciplinary Approaches to Mental Health (I-D) This course will investigate theoretical viewpoints and practical interventions in the ield of mental health and the roles of interdisciplinary professionals when working with individuals or groups with mental health issues. Critical examination of aetiological factors, current practices and evaluation of research will provide insight towards planning interventions and reviewing current initiatives.

AND MODE OF DELIVERY LEVEL 8 COURSES BRIEF DESCRIPTION CREDIT VALUE MHS8.428 Interdisciplinary Diabetes Management (I-D) This course develops theoretical and practical knowledge of diabetes mellitus within an interdisciplinary and primary health care framework. Students are assisted to explore the context of diabetes mellitus in relation to the impact of this disease on an international as well as an individual perspective. Contemporary issues in relation to pathophysiology, diagnosis, facilitating clients to reach target goals, and holistic strategies to improve outcomes and prevent comorbidities will be discussed. Students completing this course would be capable of providing diabetes education and therapeutic environments that support the person/family and community associated with diabetes. MHS8.429 Interdisciplinary Primary Health Care (I-D) This course provides the student with the skills that support a comprehensive interdisciplinary approach in a wellness model. Students will relect on, and critically analyse the theoretical basis of primary health care, with a strong focus on rural health. MHS8.431 Nutrition for Special Populations (I-D) This course will investigate nutritional requirements for special populations and the roles of inter disciplinary professionals when working with individuals or groups. Critical examination of lifestyle factors, nutritional practices and evaluation of current research will provide insight towards planning interventions and reviewing current initiatives. MHS8.432 Health Promotion (I-D) This course enables the student to develop and extend knowledge and skills in health promotion policy, planning, practice and inter-organisational work with partners. Students will critically examine the theoretical, environmental, economic, and social issues in health promotion policy and practice within New Zealand and in an international context. A speciic focus will be on addressing health disparities via health promotion. The course will move through topics related to healthy public policy; social and environmental change; health promotion assessment, development and evaluation; and medical approaches to health promotion such as social marketing and selective primary health care. MHS8.433 Exercise Prescription for Special Populations (I-D) This course aims to provide students with theoretical and practical knowledge of exercise testing and prescription for people within special populations, e.g. those with cardiovascular, respiratory, metabolic, neuro/muscular conditions; or other special populations such as athletes, elderly, pre- or post natal. Topics cover the aetiology and physiology of a range of conditions from an interdisplinary perspective, the efects of exercise on the condition, and recommendations for exercise testing and programming. MHS8.434 Health and Public Policy (I-D) This course provides students with the opportunity to explore the relationships between public policy and health. The course addresses several key aspects of public policy; models and frameworks, policy processes, and the role of Government. It provides the opportunity for students to critically discuss and appraise drivers for health policy and undertake a critical analysis of health policies. Students participating in this course will be able to apply their knowledge and skills in a critical way to their area of practice. ** Note: For MHS8.424, MN8.402 is a required prerequisite course For MN8.419, MN8.416 is a required prerequisite course Some Online courses run synchronous (live) sessions.
