1 CERTIFICATE IN SPORT AND HEALTH MASSAGE Information for International applicants 2016 ENTRY The Certificate in Sport and Health Massage is a full-time, 17 week programme which offers you the opportunity to complete stimulating training, leading towards qualification as a Massage Therapist. This programme provides practical and theoretical knowledge and skills in sport and therapeutic massage. Completion of this programme allows entry into the Diploma in Therapeutic and Sport Massage (Napier Campus only), a further 17 weeks of full-time study. In this application pack you will find information about the programme, descriptions for each of the subjects covered and fees and costs associated with this programme. 2 CERTIFICATE IN SPORT AND HEALTH MASSAGE ADDITIONAL COSTS $200 for textbooks and workbook (approximately) $30 approximately for polo shirt (approximately) $600 approximately for massage table and linen JOB OPPORTUNITIES For a trained massage practitioner employment opportunities are varied and exciting. For those wanting the hands-on approach, there is work in fitness centres, gymnasiums, and with sports teams. Being self-employed, offering relaxation massage in clinics or at home is also an option. Possible jobs and career opportunities can include: Fitness centre s Health care facilities The beauty industry Further study (eg, towards a Diploma in Therapeutic and Sport Massage, Bachelor of Recreation and Sport, or Diploma in Beauty and Body Therapy). ASSESSMENTS Term Four Starts HB Anniversary Day Labour Day Monday, 10 October Friday, 21 October Monday, 24 October Assessments include essays, written reports, assignments, and written and practical examination. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS Meet the NCEA Level 1 Literacy and Numeracy Requirements OR Provide evidence of achievement at an equivalent level PROFESSIONAL CRITERIA All applicants are required to: Sign a declaration and a request for personal information held on the Police computer If the declaration identifies any issue that may impact on the student s ability to complete the programme, the student can discuss these with the Programme Coordinator at an information session. EIT reserves the right to decline entry to the programme should an applicant s police record be such that they would be considered unsuitable for the type of work undertaken whilst on this programme or by graduates of this programme. The guidelines on which this decision will be based are the relevant professional association or industry requirements Programme Ends Friday, 25 November 2016 ENGLISH LANGUAGE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS Applicants for whom English is not their first language must have an acceptable level of English language fluency prior to enrolment in the programme. This may be demonstrated in a variety of ways, including successful study of a programme in which English was the language of instruction, completion of a New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Level 3), approved scores on IELTS tests (5.5 Academic with no band score lower than 5.0), completion of accepted international equivalents, or completion of an EIT assessment ENTRY WITH CREDIT You may already have some knowledge or skills that can be recognised as part of your intended study. This may take a number of different forms including study while at high school, study at a private training establishment, workplace training, other tertiary study, life experiences or voluntary work. If you think you may qualify, you may want to apply for Cross Credit or Recognition of Prior Learning. Cross Credit is based on the equivalency of courses or qualifications. You would apply for Cross Credit if you have passed a very similar course at the same level.
3 Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is based on the assessment of your current knowledge and skills. You would apply for RPL if you had gained the relevant knowledge and skills through life experiences and informal learning situations. You will be asked to provide details of anything that you would like considered as credit toward your intended programme of study, as part of your application. RPL and Cross Credit cannot be awarded for a course if you are enrolled in that course. You must apply prior to enrolment. COURSE BRIEF DESCRIPTION CREDIT VALUE NZQA LEVEL CSHM4.03 Professional Studies The purpose of this course is to develop knowledge and understanding in professional practice: library literacy, academic writing, healthy environments, behaviours and actions within cultures are examined in this course CSHM4.04 Human Structure and Function This course assists students to develop an understanding of human anatomy and physiology. Anatomical components and structure and function of the cardiovascular, integumentary lymphatic and musculoskeletal systems are examined CSHM4.05 Massage Practice 1 This course focuses on the history of massage and the basic tools of a massage therapist: the ability to prepare a massage environment, assessment, conducting a massage session, review and recording findings. This course forms the basis of all further study in this programme. P or C: CSHM CSHM5.02 Massage Practice 2 This course introduces you to the scope of legal, ethical and professional responsibilities central to Therapeutic Massage practice as well as exploring current research and fundamental philosophies and principles which shape the discipline of massage. Skills required to prepare for, assess, conduct, review and recording findings of a massage session with athletes will be developed including a thorough understanding of origins and insertions of muscles. Details on applying for your Student Visa are available on the Immigration New Zealand website 06 Let us know your arrival details Once your visa has been approved you can then book your flights. Please let us know your arrival details whether you ll be living in EIT accommodation or not. If you are staying in EIT accommodation, we will arrange for you to be collected from the Napier airport for FREE.
