5 The Solution (How) GPS/GIS Based Visited other agencies with active sign inventories Considered higher cost COTS solutions Decided to perform in house with 3 staff: Engineer/Sign Tech/GIS Guy Purchased equipment and materials needed in December and began collecting sign data Jan 2, 2009 (6 months after audit)

10 Putting It All Together: Collection items Location (GPS or aerial photo) Attributes: 20 fields: Sign ID, Zone No, Pos No, other qualitative items, photo Auto assigned based on location: Route No, Pos No, Street Auto assigned: Time In/Out, Tech (for liability) Created Sign Layer (Point) + Zones (Polygon) Layer + Route Layer (Line - one direction, merged to single line) Route layer assigns pos. number (Linear Ref) Assembled layers in ArcMap Scale dependant aerial photo layer

13 Workflow Steps From GIS (Geodatabase): 1. ArcPad checkout tool in ArcGIS (to.axf AXFCopy to copy customizations forms/scripts) 2. Sync to Toughbook 3. GPS to ArcPad 4. Field collection: Unique ID assigned with sticker Located via GPS with custom clamp Sign attributes recorded (Sign ID, Time, etc.) Photo taken 5. Sync back to GIS/ArcPad checkin tool 6. Export sign data to Access 7. Repeat Step 1

20 Lessons Learned Envision your data products first Wireless bar code reader (cord awkward) Automate GIS functions Use aerial photo for areas/times with poor GPS availability Keep it simple! Configure defaults to save time Careful with sync watch duplicate entries Backup often!
