1 17 th -22 nd May, 2015 Hyatt Regency Hotel Working with you, for all of us hosted by the Geological Society of Trinidad and Tobago (GSTT) SHORT COURSE REGISTRATION FORM CONFERENCE SHORT COURSES The Geological Society of Trinidad and Tobago (GSTT) is pleased to host two exciting one-day short courses during the 20 th Caribbean Geological Conference (17 th -22 nd May, 2015). Both short courses will be held at the Hyatt Regency Ballroom. Course material, meals and refreshments will be provided by the GSTT. Refunds of Short Course registration fees will be done before April 17 th, SHORT COURSE REGISTRATION GROUP BOOKINGS - The GSTT is pleased to offer a Short Course registration group discount of 20% to parties of 10 persons. Short Course # 1 : Recent developments in understanding the regional tectonics and petroleum potential of offshore Trinidad, Tobago Basin, Grenada Basin, Barbados Ridge and Orinoco Delta Introduction The course is designed to review recent results from studies of the main hydrocarbon-bearing and frontier basins of the southeastern Caribbean Date: Sunday 17 th May 2015 Duration: 1 day Venue: Hyatt Regency Ballroom, Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago Course Level: Introductory/Intermediate Instructors: Professor Paul Mann (University of Houston) Tricia Alvarez (University of Texas at Austin) Cost: $750US Main topics include: Plate tectonic history and paleogeography of the South Eastern Caribbean Defining the Caribbean-South American suture zone Lithospheric deformation including the STEP model Relation of deformational pulses in Trinidad to plate history Middle Miocene unconformity as a widespread marker Model for along-strike changes in deformation from Trinidad to Barbados accretionary prism Correlating belts in Trinidad to offshore areas of the Barbados accretionary prism Model for opening of the Grenada and Tobago basins Structural controls on North Coast Marine Area What is the basement of the Barbados ridge? Explaining variations of structure along the western edge of the Barbados Ridge
2 Possible explanations for oil types on Barbados Defining the lithospheric trace of the subducting Atlantic crust Defining the components of the Barbados accretionary prism Correlations from Trinidad to Eastern Venezuela Development of the Orinoco delta and its deformation in Trinidad Relating hydrocarbon provinces to differing crustal blocks and source blocks Where is the deepwater offshore hydrocarbon potential? Short Course # 2 : Full Wave Inversion (FWI) and Velocity Model Building (VMB) Introduction to velocity model building The course is designed to impart an understanding of what can and cannot be achieved within an imaging project. The principles of migration will be reviewed from an intuitive non-mathematical viewpoint, and the steps involved in building a subsurface parameter model will be explained. The emphasis will be on what is fitfor-purpose given the commercial objectives, and how to tune the imaging approach to meet those objectives. Understand how migration works, in terms of the approximations involved, and how this relates to the geology to be imaged. Appreciate the limitations of current and future imaging and velocity estimation technology, so as to be able to decide what model building technique should be employed to image a given geological objective. Date: Tuesday 19 th May 2015 Duration: 1 day Venue: Hyatt Regency Ballroom, Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago Course Level: Introductory/Intermediate Instructors: Dr. David Yingst (Manager of Geophysical Research, ION/GXT) Dr. Ian Jones (Distinguished Advisor Geophysical Modelling, ION/GXT) Cost: $750US General Course Outline: i. FWI The basic theory behind full wave inversion (FWI) will be presented including a brief derivation of Tarantola's formulation and a comparison with RTM. There will be a discussion of practical strategies including data pre-conditioning and gradient post-conditioning. The impact of regularization (total variation, well ties, and dip regularization) will be covered. While the primary emphasis will be on inverting for velocity, methods of inverting for other models (density and anisotropy) will be mentioned. ii. VMB Review of migration schemes The limitations of time migration and benefits of depth migration Snell s law and how to ignore it How does depth migration differ from time migration? Is depth migration always necessary? Ray methods versus wavefield extrapolation methods One-way versus two-way propagation Creating gathers in wavefield extrapolation methods Pre-processing considerations for RTM How detailed can we get? Sources of uncertainty. Non-uniqueness and ambiguity Anisotropy versus heterogeneity (and other higher order moveout effects) Tomographic update: Resolving short-scale-length velocity anomalies MAZ, OVT, and Q tomography Waveform inversion and emerging R&D directions Current industrial practice (exemplified via case study reviews)
3 Iterative model update: Layered, gridded and hybrid tomography Near-surface velocity anomalies Seismic response to strong vertical velocity change (e.g. chalk, basalt,..) Seismic response to strong lateral velocity change (e.g. salt walls) Instructors Profile: i. Dr. David Yingst - Manager, Geophysical Research, ION GEOPHYSICAL David Yingst received a PhD in Mathematics from Rice University in 1979, his mathematical interests being micro-local analysis, differential geometry, and harmonic analysis. After a postdoc position at MIT and an assistant professorship at UCLA he decided to follow more earthly pursuits. He worked in radar data analysis and imaging for 4 years, medical imaging for 10, and, earthiest of all, geophysical data analysis since His primary interests are imaging, waveform inversion, and signal processing. ii. Dr. Ian Jones Distinguished Advisor Geophysical Modelling, ION GEOPHYSICAL Ian Jones received a joint honours BSc in Physics with Geology from the University of Manchester, UK, a Research MSc in Seismology from the University of Western Ontario, Canada, and a PhD in Geophysical Signal Processing from the University of British Columbia, Canada, in 1985.After working in Canada for 2 years for Inverse Theory & Applications Inc., he joined CGG, where for 15 years he was involved in R&D in the London and Paris offices, latterly as manager of the depth imaging research group. Since 2000 he has been with ION GX Technology, as an advisor in their London office. His interests include velocity model building and migration, and his most recent activity includes writing the text book An Introduction to Velocity Model Building published by the EAGE in 2010; and co-editing the SEG Geophysics Reprints series volumes Classics of Elastic Wave Theory and Pre-Stack Depth Migration and Velocity Model Building. He has helped to organise various depth imaging workshops, and regularly teaches the EAGE/SEG continuing education course An Introduction to Velocity Model Building. He is a member of the EAGE, SEG, and the PESGB; serves on the EAGE OGGD and technical program committees and the SEG editorial committee, is an associate editor for the journals Geophysics and Geophysical Prospecting, and is an external lecturer at Imperial College London and at the University of Leeds. Ian was awarded the EAGE s Anstey Medal in 2003 for contributions to the depth imaging literature, and made the SEG 2012 Honorary Lecturer for Europe, for contributions to advancing the science and technology of geophysics.
