4 Baudó-Panamá Arc Geological Overview CENTRAL CORDILLERA Active volcanic arc from subduction of the Nazca Plate under the South American Plate, low to medium grade metamorphic rocks act as host rock for Mesozoic and Cenozoic intrusions WESTERN CORDILLERA Cretaceous oceanic crust accreted to the South American Plate, which serves as basement for Cenozoic intrusions and volcanism BAUDÓ-PANAMÁ ARC Cenozoic volcanic arc and associated rocks, accreted to South America, possibly as part of the accretion of the Panamá Isthm GUYANA SHIELD Paleoproterozoic and Neoproterozoic high-grade metamorphic and felsic intrusive rocks, part of the Amazonian Craton FORELAND BASIN Mesozoic and Cenozoic sedimentary rocks, tectonic response to uplift of the Andes and rifting of the Amazon basin, with the Amazonian craton as basement EASTERN CORDILLERA Mesozoic and Cenozoic sedimentary rocks as part of a thrust-and-fold deformation belt, with a metamorphic-igneous Paleozoic and Mesozoic basement, inverted basin.
