Solutions for Smart Cities & Communities Proposals from the Chemical Industry Sustainability Council March 28, 20131
Reasons to put effort in this EIP Building & Construction important markets for many of us Not actively participating or at least following and influencing the development of this EIP and the future developments of the building & construction market in Europe, would be a missed opportunity. To achieve this we should be pro-actively participating. Building & Construction sector are in great difficulty in Europe. Most potential expected from refurbishment/renovation. 2
Short term opportunities & threats Market uptake Near to market and new existing technologies Barriers Legal Regulations Financial Market change E.g. make refurbishment and using energy efficient technologies financially attractive throughout the value chain. Huge untapped market potential (because of complexity) 3
Longer term opportunities & threats Opportunities 1. Influencing market direction/development 2. Market creation in Europe 3. RD&I strategy longer term 4. Higher return on investment energy efficient RD&I investments Threats 1. Not being part of the EIP means no or very little access to funding (strong focus on ICT) 2. Rules/regulation/procurement power of regions and communities will give strong direction to the market and uptake of energy efficient solutions. (aim of this EIP!) 4
How is it organized? Top Down & Bottom up
Structure EIP Smart Cities & Communities High level group Cefic/Mapei EC officials Sherpa Group Stakeholder platform Management Cefic/AkzoNobel Cefic/AkzoNobel Stakeholder Platform
Composition of the HLSG Private sector Siemens SAP Bouygues Nokia Ericsson Alliander Volkswagen RATP Group Alstom Schneider Technologies Philips Orange Mapei (CEFIC) 5 Financial institutions (EIB, ) 5 Mayors (Almere, Barcelona, Funchal, Bratisava, Warsaw, Londen, ) 5 European Commission (Kroes, Oettinger, Callas, ) 5 Regulators 7
Where do we stand? Cefic Key Innovation Combination of advanced materials for Energy Efficient Buildings: High performance Insulation Solutions (foams, coatings). Phase Change Materials in concrete and plaster-boards Smart Windows IR Reflective coatings (the list is not closed) Positions in: HLSG, Sherpa Group, Stakeholder Platform: Working & Roadmap Group 8
Our Commitment 9
How do we surpass the small scale projects and bridge this valley to offer competitively priced solutions? 10
Smart Cities & Communities and the chemical industry Can we obtain our EU energy efficiency goals without the Chemical Industry and Smart Materials? What do we offer to cities and communities? What s the added value combined with ICT driven solutions? What s our commitment and how could we proceed?
Chemical Industry Some EU figures Sales: 539 billion euros p/y Employment: 1,19 million people R&D investments: 7,7 billion euros p/y
Some chemical industry solutions to building energy efficiency up to 70% Materials for PV, solar thermal systems Indoor light reflecting paints Cool roof & wall coatings Insulating wall systems Functional windows Next-generation (LED) lighting Sealants and air barriers Optimized district heating and cooling Insulative piping / pipe insulation Thermal insulation foams A++ appliances Domestic energy storage
Potential reduction 70% A few figures (reports from ICCA and IEA): 75 % of European citizens live in Cities 160 millions buildings (40-50% are pre-1960) 1% new building /Year 1,7% refurbished (from «light» to «deep») buildings / Year. 40 % of primary energy is used for buildings heating and cooling. Using established energy efficiency solutions can reduce the primary energy use by 70%. 14
Old news or quick & affordable access to the latest innovations? 15
Combined materials and solutions make the difference Wall & Roof insulation Less heating & cooling capacity Combined with smart metering, ICT and heating & cooling solutions the effect would be even larger and would make the solutions financially competitive. Interior light reflective paints Brighter spaces Less artificial lighting, less energy Save Energy Up to 70% Affordable Regional jobs, education Cool roof coatings Less cooling capacity Phase Change Materials shave off peak load for cooling in summer Less airco needed Plus the added value of creating & maintaining jobs in a challenged sector represents an important value
Examples 17
What we are looking for Cooperation with cities and communities, architects and construction companies having the ambition to renovate larger areas and buildings in a sustainable manner at a competitive price Develop an effective replicable approach for the renovation industry & solutions and make sure customers have access to the best combination of the latest innovations at an affordable price. Adapted to their specific situation. To obtain breakthrough energy efficiency results in buildings and construction in the EU at a large scale. And as a side effect: Train & develop Build & maintain jobs in Europe
No 1 size fits all approach With city responsibles, urban planners, architects, construction companies and retrofit companies we study the specific situation: Age/value of the building/area Budget/financial situation Climate Efficiency, and other targets Structure.. Interconnection with other ICT/technology solutions to enhance the effect Local/regional companies for training/education and jobs 19
