1 Local Scholarships and Awards for Post High School Training Available To Graduates Talawanda High School 2012

2 Introduction This booklet has been prepared to provide the students of Talawanda High School and their parents with information regarding the local financial aid resources for post high school training. The listing is not intended to include all financial aid resources, but rather to indicate those which are given by Talawanda High School or those granted by local organizations. The criteria for these scholarships include areas such as: * Plans of post- secondary education * Scholastic achievement * Academic promise * School and/or community volunteer service * Extracurricular activities * Interviews * Recommendations * Transcripts * Demonstrated leadership ability * GPA * Class rank * ACT/SAT scores * Application process * Essay * Motivation/character Institutions of higher learning control more money than any other resource facility and it is recommended that students seeking financial aid contact the Financial Aid Office at the institutions which they plan to attend. This should be done at the same time an application is requested. Other scholarship opportunities are announced by the Talawanda High School Guidance Office as the information is received. Seniors should check in guidance for these opportunities. The last page of this booklet contains a scholarship application. For your convenience, you should make copies if you are applying for more than one scholarship. It is highly recommended that you attach a copy of your transcript with each scholarship application. IMPORTANT: Please STAPLE your individual application materials together before you turn them in. DO NOT use envelopes, report covers, or paper clips. All forms must be completed and returned to the Guidance Office by 3:00 p.m. on Friday, March 16, 2012 unless otherwise stated. 3 American Field Service (AFS) Award The American Field Service (AFS) Award is an award presented to a senior who best exemplifies the ideals of AFS. By believing that intercultural experiences can lead to world peace, this student has broadened his/her horizons. * Student must be graduating during the current school year * Must have been an active member of AFS for at least two years * Shown a curiosity and concern for learning about other cultures * Revealed an eagerness to make Talawanda s foreign students feel at home in Oxford * $ Additional Requirements Applicants must write an essy on Furthering International Understanding. The essay should be typed, double- spaced and contain a minimum of 1,000 words. Classroom, Community, Character Scholarship This scholarship, sponsored by Don and Tari Tharp, is given to recognize a student for academic achievement, service to school and community, and good citizenship. * Presented to a college- bound senior * GPA of 3.5 or above * Participation in extracurricular activities, whether school- sponsored or community organizations. Quality of involvement is more important than quantity of activities. Preference given to service activity that has benefit to individuals or groups in the community. * Must have a clean conduct/discipline record * Priority given to students who have not been awarded other scholarships/grants. Application Procedure * Submit completed scholarship application, including high school transcript * Submit a list of extracurricular activities, including offices held and/or leadership roles, type and amount of participation, etc. * Include two letters of reference/recommendation; one from a teacher and one from another source: religious leader, group advisor, etc. * Applicant should include a short statement (300 words or less) on the benefits (personal and/or societal) of community involvement, as realized from his or her own experiences. * $300.00

4 Joy Derickson Memorial Nursing Scholarship Members of the United Presbyterian Church of Oxford are providing funds in the memory of Joy Derickson a Talawanda High School student who had cystic fibrosis. * Student must be progressing toward graduation in June of the current school year or be graduated since the previous June * Student should be furthering their career in the health field. * Academic promise * Transcript * $500 toward the first year of training Lacey Kehr Scholarship This scholarship is given in honor of Lacey Kehr for the caring and professional advice she has given to students and parents over her many years of service at Talawanda High School. The Saas Family, including Tyler, Jonathan, and Jordan, established this scholarship upon their graduation in June * Applicants must be positioned to graduate from THS in June of the current school year. * Applicants must have at least a 3.0 grade point average for their junior year and mid- senior year reporting periods. * Applicants must submit a completed Scholarship Application Form * Applicants must be accepted and committed to attending a degree granting college or university. * The Scholarship Committee, through their own knowledge of the applicants and/or through other means, must know that the successful applicant has made significant strides during their high school career in both their academic pursuits and personal growth. In other words, the recipient has turned the corner. * Academic merit based on GPA - include copy of transcript * Evidence of giving back to others through community service * Academic and personal growth (continued on next page)

5 (Kehr continued) * One $1000 nonrenewable scholarship made payable to the recipient s college or university Application Procedure * Submit completed scholarship application * Include transcript with application * Include three letters of recommendation from non- family members who can attest to the applicant s financial need and community service. At least one of the letters must come from outside of Talawanda High School. Dr. Mark Mortine Scholarship The Dr. Mark Mortine Scholarship is given in honor of his 35 years of dedicated service to Talawanda High School as a teacher and administrator. * Graduating senior * Minimum 3.0 GPA overall and an minimum of a 3.5 GPA during the student s combined junior and senior years * Primary consideration for students who intend to major in education. Secondary consideration for students who intend to major in another helping profession. * Demonstrated history of volunteer work. * Preference for students who have taken three or more years of a high school foreign language. Application Procedure * Minimum 500- word typed essay describing the student s career goals and the motivating factors behind those goals. * Two letters of recommendation from non- family members at least one must be a current or former Talawanda staff member. * Transcript * Completed scholarship application form * One $300 non- renewable

6 NAACP The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) will award scholarships to students of color graduating from Talawanda High School who plan to continue his/her education. The basic criteria for the scholarship is: * Plans of post- secondary education * Scholastic achievement * Extracurricular activities * Awards and other accomplishments * Community service * Two letters of recommendation. One must be a teacher and the other may be an employer, pastor, coach, etc * Transcript * Talawanda Scholarship Application in addition to the NAACP Application * $500 per semester for the first two years Additional Requirements * There is an additional application in the back of this booklet that must be completed Oxford Community Foundation Robert W. and Mary Louise Bogan Scholarship This award is administered by the Oxford Community Foundation with funds provided by Mr. & Mrs. Bogan, former educators in the Talawanda School District. The intent is to encourage students who would like to become educators and who enroll in academic programs in the field of education. 7 (OCF Bogan continued) * One scholarship of $500 Oxford Community Foundation Dutch Grammel Memorial Scholarship Dutch Grammel was a senior at Talawanda High School who passed away in the spring of 2011 from a rare neurological disorder. He was a two- year starter for the varsity Talawanda baseball team and was the starting catcher for the Braves in He was named to the second team Scarlet Division of the Fort Ancient Valley Conference as a junior. He hit.373 while batting fourth in the lineup and led the pitchers in innings. He was a honor roll student and a member of the homecoming court. This scholarship will award those students who exemplify those leadership qualities for which Dutch was best known. This Award is funded annually by the Dutch Grammel Memorial Scholarship. * Fulltime attendance at Talawanda High School * Graduating senior with strong leadership qualities * Pursuing further education at either a 2 year or 4 year institution * Minimum of a 2.5 gpa * Provide 2 letters of recommendation that address the qualifications to receive this scholarship * Two $500 scholarships to be awarded this year only, every year after, there will be only one $500 scholarship awarded

8 Oxford Community Foundation Tammy McCartney Memorial Scholarship This scholarship is administered by the Oxford Community Foundation with funds provided by family, friends and community on behalf of Tammy McCartney. Tammy was a career teacher for 24 years in the Talawanda School District, was a dedicated professional, a devoted wife and mother. Her life exemplified a persevering attitude and a tremendous work ethic. This scholarship has been established to memorialize her determination and positive attitude. * Applicant is a graduating senior pursuing post secondary education (certificate or degree- granting program) Award Criteria Applicants must demonstrate: * Academic and personal growth * Compassionate service to organizations, groups or individuals * Active participation in clubs, hobbies and/or organizations Application Procedure * Submit completed THS scholarship application * Submit two letters of recommendation that address the criteria for the award (see above). Specific examples are encouraged. * Submit a current transcript * Submit an essay of no more than 1,000 words using one of the three topics listed below as your inspiration. * Overcoming Obstacles * Helping Others * The Importance of Family * The essay must be typed, double- spaced, and in Helvetica 12 point font if using a word processor. : * One scholarship of $ nonrenewable Oxford Community Foundation David Osborne Memorial Scholarship This award is administered by the Oxford Community Foundation with funds provided by the family of David Osborne, a 1965 graduate of Talawanda High School. The Osborne Family is offering assistance to a graduating senior planning to continue his/her education. Talawanda scholarship applications should be completed paying attention to Question 12 as it relates to athletics. Oxford Community Foundation Oxford Chamber of Commerce Scholarship The Oxford Chamber of Commerce is committed to helping local business thrive. In order to do this, business need good employees. That is why the Oxford Chamber of Commerce created this scholarship fund. This fund will help an individual work toward a degree at a trade school so that they can bring new knowledge and expertise to a local business. This Scholarship is funded by the oxford Chamber of Commerce. 10 Oxford Community Foundation Mitzie Statum Spirit of Goodwill Memorial Scholarship Mitzie Statum was a 1980 graduate of Talawanda High School. She died on August 28, This award has been established to honor Mitzie s deep sense of respect and caring for others. Her example helped to promote positive relationships in her classes and with school personnel. * A Talawanda High School Special Education Senior * Provide two letters of recommendation that address the qualifications of the award; recommendations should be from one teacher and one guidance counselor. * $50 - $100 Oxford Community Foundation Charles Warren Memorial Scholarship This award is administered by the Oxford Community Foundation with funds provided by the Oxford City Council based on city ordinance #2503. The intent is to recognize students who, like the late Charles Warren, are committed to serving the community, and to encourage students who plan to pursue careers in public service. 11 Oxford Community Foundation Eric Wasser Memorial Scholarship This scholarship is administered by the Oxford Community Foundation with funds provided by the family of Eric Wasser, a 1984 graduate of Talawanda High School. The Wasser family is offering assistance to a graduating senior planning to continue his/her education. * Student must be progressing toward graduation in June of the current school year or be graduated since the previous June * Planning to further his/her education * Academic promise - include copy of transcript * Potential success as a person is more important than success as a scholar * $200 - $300 Oxford Community Foundation James Red Wilcher Scholarship for the Arts James Red Wilcher was born on March 3, 1940, in Miamisburg, Ohio, and died on December 6, He is a graduate of Miami University and resided in Oxford from He later returned to Oxford to pursue a Masters Degree in Theater. While a student at Miami, he assisted with the Miami University Children s Theater Program, served a s a mentor to numerous local students, and would best be remembered for the inspiration he provided to them. This scholarship is to be awarded to a Talawanda High School student pursuing an arts related career, e.g., theater, dance, music, art, graphic design, etc. It is designed to encourage an individual s artistic goals. * Talawanda High School senior * Minimum of a 2.0 GPA * Provide a statement of history of your involvement in a form of artistic interest and your future goals of being involved in the arts. * Provide two letters of recommendation that address the qualifications for you to obtain this scholarship * One $300 scholarship

12 Oxford Kiwanis/Amy Wengler/Key Club Community Service Award Donations in memory of Amy Wengler to the Talawanda Key Club are used to offer this award. * Open to graduating seniors who have demonstrated exceptional effort in providing community service * Student must submit a list of at least 5 community service activities or at least 25 hours of community service during junior and senior years (including summer) and documentation of service on the separate application form. * $ Additional Information * There is an additional application in the back of this booklet that must be completed Oxford Lions Club Jim Beaton Memorial Scholarship This scholarship is given in memory of Jim Beaton of the Oxford Lions Club, whose life reflected the values and ideals of Lionism through selfless service to the greater Oxford community. The Oxford Lions Club Jim Beaton Scholarship recognizes a graduating Talawanda High School senior who has made plans for further formal education and has, throughout high school, demonstrated a willingness to assist others by giving freely of his or her time and labor in the causes of school and community service. * Scholastic merit - include copy of transcript * Involvement in athletic, band or music programs * Community service * One scholarship of $1,000

13 Oxford Lions Club Community Service Scholarship This scholarship is given in memory of Oxford Lions whose lives have reflected the values and ideals of Lionism through selfless service to our community. The Oxford Lions Club Community Service Scholarship recognizes a graduating Talawanda High School senior who has made plans for further formal education and has, throughout high school, demonstrated a willingness to assist others by giving freely of his or her time and labor in the cause of school and community service. * Submit a record of school and community service * Have a history of academic excellence * Demonstrate a financial need * Transcript * Two $1000 scholarships Oxford Masonic Lodge #67 Free and Accepted Masons W. Mark Sheard Memorial Scholarship The Oxford Masonic Lodge No. 67, F.&A.M., Mark W. Sheard Memorial College Scholarships are competitive scholarships that may be awarded annually either to Talawanda High School graduates, or to children of members in good standing of Oxford Lodge No. 67, F.&A.M. The following scholarships are available: (1) one to a graduating high school senior (graduating in 2012); a second to a sophomore college student, a third to a junior college student, and a fourth to a college senior. Hence in 2012 four scholarships may be offered as described above. Must be a graduating high school student, or be a continuing college student as described below. Applicants must be of good moral character, exemplify good citizenship and must provide evidence of personal involvement in school and/or college activities, and participate in community service type projects that are indicative of good citizenship. Applicants must be pursuing further formal education at a technical school, or a two or a four- year college. Students selected for a scholarship one year may re- apply for the following academic year (up to a maximum of 4 years of scholarship support) providing they remain in good academic standing (i.e., not on probation for any reason) are making good progress toward graduation, and meet the relevant requirements listed below. Requirements 1. For 1st Year Scholarship (for a graduating high school student): A. Three (3) letters of recommendation: One from a high school teacher, one from a community or school leader/advisor (e.g., 4- H Club or FFA advisor), and one (1) from a minister or pastor. B. The applicant must write an essay of approximately 1000 words on the general subject of Freemasonry and the Founding Fathers of the United States ; the essay must be typed and doubled spaced. 14 (Masonic continued) 2. For Continuing College Students (students who have previously received one of our scholarships); MUST provide the following: A. Evidence of good academic standing as indicated by a copy of the student s college transcript. B. A letter of recommendation from the students college advisor C. Evidence of continued involvement in community service type activities. 3. College students applying for one of our scholarships for the first time: College students who are applying for the first time to our scholarship program must complete items 2 A, B, and C above, and must also write an essay as described above for first time applicants and also have a letter of recommendation sent from their minister or pastor. Letters of Recommendation: These should address character, academic motivation, and contributions as a good citizen as well as other pertinent information. Selection of Scholarship Awardees: The Board of Directors of the Temple Board, Oxford Masonic Lodge No. 67, F&AM is responsible for the evaluation of applications and the selection of scholarship awardees. Each scholarship is for $2000, payable to the recipient s chosen school by the Treasurer of the Oxford Lodge #67 Masonic Temple Association, Box 88, Oxford, OH upon verification of the recipient s acceptance and/or continued enrollment by the college or university. P.E.O. Chapter CB Scholarship P.E.O. is a philanthropic organization where women celebrate the advancement of women; educate women through scholarships, grants, awards, loans, and stewardship of Cottey College; and motivate women to achieve their highest aspirations. A committee of members of Chapter CB will review the candidates and use a matrix of the following criteria along with a holistic review of the application to award this scholarship. * Graduating senior girl * Plan to continue education at a junior college, college, university or vocational school * Student s academic record (GPA, Class Rank, Test Scores) * A brief statement explaining future educational plans * Leadership (organizations and participation) * Service to school and/or community * One scholarship of $500 Additional Information * There is an additional application in the back of this booklet that must be completed

15 Rotary Club Scholarship At least seven scholarships will be presented by the Oxford Rotary Club to recognize students for good citizenship and service to the school and community. Since Rotary s motto is Service Above Self, service to school/community is a strong consideration. * Scholarships are being presented to college- bound seniors who are shown to have financial need * Transcript including g.p.a. and class rank * Two letters of reference * Description of his/her planned program of study * Brief statement of financial need and resources available * Description of school activities, including honors and awards received * List of community service activities, employment history (if any), hobbies or personal interests * Scholarship awards received * Each award will be a minimum of $1,000 * Seven or more scholarships will be presented The Talawanda Educator s Association s Jane B. Salmon Scholarship Sponsored by the Talawanda Educator s Association, family and friends in honor of Jane B. Salmon a former teacher in the Talawanda elementary schools. * Student must be progressing towards graduation in the current school year * Student must be either a. Planning to pursue a degree in a helping profession, such as teaching or nursing b. Pursuing a degree with a major in special education c. A current or former learning disability (LD) student who is or has been enrolled in a disabilities class or has been served by a LD tutor and who is planning to pursue additional training or education and must be accepted at an institute for further education or training. * Character * Recommendation and/or application * A transcript must accompany your application form * $500 - $1,000 Amount will vary from year to year

16 Jeff Schroer Memorial Scholarship Members of the Oxford community are providing funds in the memory of Jeff Schroer, a Talawanda High School and Miami University graduate who was a leader in the community. * Student must be a Talawanda High School senior accepted as a full time student for the following term at Miami University * Student must have a cumulative grade point average between 3.2 and 3.7 * No immediate or extended members of the Schroer family shall be eligible * The selection committee reserves the right not to award the scholarship if no suitable candidate is identified * Leadership demonstration * Community involvement * 2 letters of recommendation (minimum) * Essay outlining what it means to be a community leader (500 word minimum) * $1, toward tuition, room, board and related educational expenses, to be paid directly to Miami University upon confirmation of enrollment SDS Athletic Booster Scholarship This scholarship is sponsored by SDS Pizza in conjunction with Talawanda Athletic Boosters. It is awarded to two exceptional athletes who have exemplified commitment and passion for Talawanda Athletics. A committee made up of representatives from SDS, Talawanda Athletic Boosters, Talawanda High School and THS Alumni will choose scholarship recipients * Student must be a Talawanda High School college bound senior * Student must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 * Student must have participated in sports at least three years in high school and play during at least one season in his/her senior year * Application must be filled out and turned in by the deadline * Commitment/passion for the sport(s) * Essay about how Talawanda sports influenced your life (no more that 300 words) * Letter of recommendation from a coach or teacher * Two $500 non- renewable scholarships made payable to recipients college or university * One scholarship awarded to a female, one scholarship awarded to a male * There is an additional application in the back of this booklet that must be completed

17 Senior Citizens Scholarship Presented by the Senior Citizens to encourage and aid a student who needs financial assistance to continue his/her education * Student must be progressing towards graduation in the current school year * Must be planning further education * Academic promise * Community service * Transcript * $ Talawanda High School FCCLA Scholarship (Family, Career and Community Leaders of America) The Talawanda High School FCCLA chapter is offering a scholarship to any THS student who is planning on continuing their education at a post- secondary institution. * Must be a graduating senior * Planning to further his/her education at a technical school or two or four year college * Evidence of academic success - include copy of transcript * Community service * 2 letters of recommendation * $200.00

18 The Leslie A. Weisman Culinary Arts Scholarship This scholarship is given in memory of Les Weisman, an Oxford resident, who served the Oxford community as a restaurateur for over 40 years. The scholarship is being offered to an individual pursuing a career in culinary arts. * Applicant must be pursuing a career in culinary arts. * Pursuing a career in culinary arts * Demonstrated financial need * Recommendations * $ Application Procedure * Complete application form. * Include short letter stating why you have decided to study culinary arts. * Include two (2) letters of recommendation, preferably one from a teacher and one from a current or previous employer. For more information, contact Ellen Weisman, The Marvin & Janet Wilhelm Scholarship A scholarship honoring Marvin Wilhelm a former principal of Talawanda High School and his wife Jeanette M. Wilhelm. * Must be a graduating THS senior * Plans to attend a four year college majoring in a helping profession * Exhibits a willingness to help people by having volunteered his/her services through the year : * $200.00

19 The Woman s Club of Oxford Scholarship Presented by the The Woman s Club of Oxford to recognize a female or male student whose service to the school and community exemplifies those qualities of good citizenship, understanding and friendship. * Graduating senior from THS * 3.0 gpa or better * Planning to attend a college, university or technical school which is accredited in the state of Ohio * Good attendance * Clean conduct/discipline record * Character * Service to school and community Additional Requirements * Submit completed scholarship application * Write a one page essay stating why you should receive this scholarship. Include specifics as to the type of service you were involved in and how it helped others. The essay should be typed. * Two recommendations - one from a teacher and one from another source * Include transcript with application * Total contribution of $ to be distributed in one or two scholarship(s) Ginny Kirkpatrick Zimmerman Memorial Scholarship The family of Ginny Kirkpatrick Zimmerman, a 1969 graduate of Talawanda High School, is offering assistance to a graduating senior planning to continue his/her education. * Must be a graduating THS senior * Plans to pursue further education at a technical school or a two or four year college * Shows community involvement * $200.00
