C HAPTER 1 Introduction Welcome to the Cameleon advanced camera control system, designed to provide security and surveillance applications in a highly customizable and user-friendly environment. Cameleon supports client-to-server, client-to-multiple servers, and server-to-server control and monitoring of surveillance equipment via both analog and IP connections. The three main system components servers, clients, and device drivers can all reside on the same PC, or on separate PCs connected over an IP network. Cameleon's strength lies in its ability to control virtually any number and combination of analog and IP devices from different manufacturers with point and click simplicity. Cameleon seamlessly integrates cameras, monitors, switchers, DVRs, and a host of other types of devices. New device drivers with widely varying functionality can be developed for the system without changing the core server and client applications, improving system stability and reducing cost of ownership. Device drivers operate on any network-enabled platform, making the system easy to expand and highly scalable. Cameleon can be installed in a variety of display configurations. Built-in IP video allows clients with no special PC hardware to display live video in multiple windows. VGA-based configurations can display up to four video windows per monitor. This manual is directed at administrators responsible for configuring and maintaining Cameleon servers. Device drivers, which are installed as separate applications, are described in individual Driver Application Notes. 1.1 Conventions Used in this Manual Instructions for performing an action are presented as numbered steps. Whenever possible, a step is labeled with a meaningful heading in bold, capitalized text For example: CLIENT MAP LOADING Some steps include an arrow ( ) followed by text. The text following the arrow describes the effect that step will have on the system. For example: The Add New User dialog box will close. The names of windows, dialog boxes, and menus are written in title case. For example: Object Browser window Add New User dialog box File menu Cameleon Server Manual 1

The names of areas within dialog boxes and windows where related information is grouped are written within single quotes. For example: The Remote Host Information area is used to enter information about the FTP server. The names of boxes in which you type information in dialog boxes are written within single quotes. For example: If no user name is defined on the firewall host, then leave the User Name box empty. Items you click or select to perform an action are in bold face. For example: Click Yes to close the dialog box. Script commands are written in all capitals. For example: LOAD Admin_Building Menu navigation is represented using a greater-than symbol (>) between options. For example: Tools > Database Utilities > Restore Tree navigation uses a double greater-than symbol (») between branches. <Project> refers to the project name at the root of the Object Browser. Angle brackets denote a branch for a custom object created and named by an administrator. For example: Navigate the Object Browser to <project>» Clients» <client>» Windows When instructed to navigate a tree, expand each element and select the final element listed. In the preceding example, you would expand <project>» Clients» <client> and select Windows. Cross-references to another section within this manual provide the chapter or section number and name, as well as the starting page number. For example: See Chapter 8 - Archive Servers (p.43) for more information. See Section Customize Your Maps (p.65) for instructions. In the on-line version of this manual, cross-references to other sections within this manual are hyperlinked. Click the cross-reference to follow the hyperlink. TIP Notes indicate an important fact that users should be aware of when using a particular feature. Tips point out ways for users to optimize their use of Cameleon Introduction

C HAPTER 2 Configuring a New System When configuring a new Cameleon system, it is recommended that you start with a minimal configuration that allows you to test core system functionality, such as viewing video and controlling devices. Once this is working, build on the minimal configuration by adding additional clients, users and user groups, workspaces, maps, archive servers, automation, and whatever other customization you want. 2.1 Set up the Minimal Configuration This section outlines how to configure a single server with a minimal configuration. If your system has more than one server, repeat these steps for each server. Each server must have its own base license. CABLING: You can cable your equipment before or after you set up the minimal configuration. For information on cabling, refer to the Driver Application Notes for your equipment. INSTALLATION: Before you set up the minimal configuration, install the server and client applications and whatever device drivers you need to control devices in your system. Install the server application on the computer the server application will run on. Install the client application on the computer you will use to test the minimal configuration. Install the device drivers on the computer the drivers will run on, as well as on the client computer. To set up the minimal configuration, perform the following steps in the given order: 1. START SERVER: Run the server from the Windows Start menu, or double-click the Cameleon icon on the Windows desktop, if there is one. 2. ENTER BASE LICENSE: When asked whether you want to enter a base license, click Yes. Follow the instructions in Section Add a License (p.25). 3. CREATE DATABASE: When prompted to create or restore the server database, click Create. 4. LOG IN TO CONFIGURATION MODE: Use the predefined administrator account (user name: administrator, password: vis) to log in to configuration mode. See Section Launch a Server (p.10) for instructions. 5. ADD CLIENT: Add the client computer. See Section Clients (p.170) for instructions. 6. ADD WINDOWS: Add the custom windows the client will have access to. See Section Custom Windows (p.172) for instructions. 7. ADD CANVASES: For each custom window, add the canvases required to view video. See Section Canvases (p.174) for instructions. Cameleon Server Manual 3

8. START DEVICE DRIVERS: Start each device driver installed on the computer the drivers will run on. You do not need to start the drivers on the client machine. Create a database for each driver when prompted. See Section Start a Device Driver (p.6) for instructions on starting device drivers. 9. ADD DEVICE DRIVERS: Add each device driver to the server configuration. Add as many drivers as you can using the Autodiscover feature. If the Autodiscover feature missed any drivers, add them using the Add feature. See Section Devices (p.88) for instructions. 10. ADD DEVICES: Add each device in the system to the appropriate device driver. See Section Devices (p.88) for instructions. 11. DEFINE CONNECTIONS: Add connections to reflect the analog connections between devices. See Chapter 25 - Connections (p.181) for instructions. TIP 12. EXIT CONFIGURATION AND RUN SERVER: Select File > Exit and Run. You will be asked whether you want to save the changes you made to the configuration. Click Yes. If you are adding a number of similar custom windows to the same or different clients, configure the window once, then copy and paste it as needed. The canvases defined for the window will be copied with the window. 2.2 Test the Minimal Configuration Testing the minimal configuration ensures that the devices in your system are correctly connected and configured and custom windows are correctly configured. To test the minimal configuration: 1. START CLIENT: To start the client, select the Cameleon client from the Windows Start menu, or double-click the Cameleon client icon on the desktop, it there is one. 2. CONFIGURE SERVER: Click Servers at the bottom of the Client Login dialog box. Click Discover All to autodiscover servers. Select the server and Set as Home Server. Refer to the Cameleon Client Manual for more information. 4. BUILD WORKSPACE: When asked whether you want the system to build a workspace for you, click Yes. 5. TEST DEVICES: Drag a camera from the Device List to a custom window with the appropriate type of canvas to make sure you can view video from the camera. Rightclick the camera in the Device List and select Show Control Dialog to open the camera's Device Control dialog box. Test controlling the camera. Repeat this for all the cameras configured. Test the other devices in the Device List. How you test each device will depend on the type of device. Refer to the appropriate Driver Application Notes for information on controlling devices Configuring a New System

C HAPTER 3 Starting and Stopping Device Drivers 3.1 About Device Drivers Device drivers are programs that control devices. Device drivers are separate applications in Cameleon. You must install, run, and configure a device driver for each type of device you will use in your system. For example, if your system uses CamBrand cameras connected to A-1 switchers with ViewAll monitors and Living History DVRs, you must install, run, and configure the CamBrand Camera Driver, the A-1 Switcher Driver, the ViewAll Monitor Driver, and the Living History DVR Driver. INSTALLING DRIVERS: Device drivers must be installed before they can be run. Install each device driver on the computer the driver will run on, as well as on every client computer. You do not need to run the drivers installed on client machines; they simply have to be installed. If a device driver is not installed on a client, that client will not be able to display device icons on maps, device names in the Device List, or device gadgets for that type of device. The copy of a device driver you will configure and run can be installed on any computer on the network. Device drivers do not need to be installed on the same computer as the server application, nor do all the drivers need to be installed on the same computer. RUNNING DRIVERS: A device driver must be running in order to: Configure devices of that type in the server configuration Control the devices configured under that driver Start each device driver needed to control devices in your system. You can start the drivers before you start the Cameleon server, or after. TIP To perform a quick check of whether any device drivers are not running, right-click the Cameleon icon in the Windows system tray and select Current Status from the pop-up menu. Scan the Status window for variables with value Uninitalized. The value Uninitialized indicates that the device driver is not running. EXECUTABLE VS. SERVICE: When you start a device driver, you have the choice of running it as an executable or as a service. If you ever have to restart a driver that is run as an executable, you will have to follow the steps outlined here. To restart a driver that is run as a service, restart the computer the driver is installed on, or start the driver through the Windows Control Panel Administrative Tools. TIP If you run a device driver as a service, you can set the driver to restart automatically in the event of failure. To set a driver to restart automatically, run the driver as a service, open the Administrative Tools in Windows Control Panel, open the driver service, and set the restart options on the Recovery tab. 23 C HAPTER 4 Starting and Stopping Servers 4.1 About Configuration Mode and Run Mode The server application must be installed before it can be run. Cameleon servers can be launched in run mode or configuration mode. CONFIGURATION MODE: Configuration mode has a user interface that allows you to configure any type of object, including, users, maps, devices, scripts, and alarms and events. To launch a Cameleon server in configuration mode, a user must have permission to configure the software. See Section Group Permissions (p.49) for more information. RUN MODE: Run mode has no user interface. When a Cameleon server is in run mode, the server application appears in the Windows system tray, where the application continues to run in the background. A server must be in run mode for clients to connect to it. Run mode has a pop-up menu that is opened by right-clicking the Cameleon icon in the Windows system tray. Table 4.1 lists the options provided by the run mode pop-up menu. Table 4.1 Options available from the run mode pop-up menu MENU OPTION Configure Current Status Exit SECTION OF MANUAL Section Configure a Server While it is Running (p.11) Section View Run-Time Values of Variables (p.107) Section Shut Down a Server (p.13) TIP You can log in and out of configuration mode while a server is running. This allows you to perform administrative tasks without interfering with operators working in the Cameleon client. See Section Configure a Server While it is Running (p.11) for instructions Saving the Server Configuration When you change the server configuration, most changes don't come into effect until after the configuration has been saved. Only changes to device drivers and devices come into effect immediately, with the exception of a device's local settings, which come into effect after the configuration is saved. See Section Edit a Device's Local Settings (p.91) for information on local settings. To save the server configuration, select File > Save or press Ctrl-S, or exit configuration mode and click Yes when asked whether you want to save the configuration. VERIFICATION: The server will verify that all scripts and expressions are valid before saving. Operators logged in to the Cameleon client will be momentarily interrupted while the configuration is being saved. After the interruption, operators will see the new configuration. Cameleon Server Manual 9

If one or more scripts or expressions contain errors, the server displays an error message and gives you the opportunity to make corrections. See Section Syntax Error-Checking (p.116) for instructions on making corrections. Scripts and expressions are also verified when you launch the server. If there are any errors, you do not have the option to launch the server in run mode. You are automatically presented with the login dialog box for configuration mode. A server will not save changes to the configuration if there are any errors. If you do not correct the errors before exiting, all the changes you made to the configuration will be lost, except for changes to device drivers and devices. 4.2 Launch a Server If this is the first time you have launched the server, or if your base license has expired, you must enter a base license before proceeding with the configuration. Click Yes when asked whether you want to enter a base license. The License Manager will open. Follow the instructions in Section Add a License (p.25). If the server configuration has more devices or clients than your licensing allows, possibly because an upgrade license has expired, Cameleon will warn you and present you with the login dialog box for configuration mode. If desired, log in to configuration mode and delete devices and clients until you are within the allowable limit, or contact Sales at to obtain a new upgrade license. To start a server: 1. Run the Cameleon application from the Windows Start menu, or double-click the Cameleon icon on the Windows desktop, if there is one. If the server database is corrupted or missing, you will be prompted to either restore a backup or create a new database. Creating a new server database destroys the existing server database, if there is one. For information on restoring a backup, see Chapter 29 - Database Utilities (p.207). Once a valid database is in place, the Cameleon splash screen will open. The splash screen has a timer that counts down from 15 seconds. 2. MODE: (a) (b) RUN MODE: To launch the server in run mode, click Run, or let the timer count down to zero. The Cameleon icon will appear in the Windows system tray, indicating that the server is running. CONFIGURATION MODE: To launch the server in configuration mode, click Configure before the counter reaches zero. The Server Login dialog box will open Starting and Stopping Servers
