2 An initiative based on environmental responsibility at one of Sweden s best transport locations Kiruna Katrineholm Logistics Centre (KLC) is located where the western and southern railway trunk lines meet. The arterial roads 52, 55, 56 and 57 converge here. Due to its strategic location, Katrineholm has access to the primary flows of goods in Sweden. It develops land, builds, leases out and manages logistics properties, and operates within logistics sector development. 4 Katrineholm Logistics Centre Efficient logistics with a clear environmental profile Economic and environmental consideration will make major demands of Swedish public authorities, municipalities and enterprises as they plan for the future. The investment in Katrineholm Logistics Centre is one example of how Katrineholm municipality and participating enterprises are meeting these demands. A terminal for efficient warehousing and goods handling with railway shuttles to and from Göteborg port implies large environmental benefits, lower transport costs and more flexible logistics for businesses. Katrineholm municipality and Linköping University have long collaborated to support regional businesses, and the university s expertise in the logistics field contributes to the development of Katrineholm Logistics Centre. Companies gain access to the university s know-how through a logistics council. Katrineholm Logistics Centre will contain two terminals for unloading and loading goods. The southern terminal, which will be operational in May 2009, has a loading and storage space of 20,000 square metres. When construction has been completed the northern terminal, which will be commissioned in the second half of 2010, will have a potential loading and storage space of approximately 50,000 square meters. Both the terminals have facilities for receiving full-length trains and provide possibilities for: l loading and unloading freight, containers, trailers and general cargo; l warehousing goods; l stuffing and stripping of goods; l servicing containers and railway vehicles directly adjacent to the terminal. Katrineholm Logistikfastigheter AB currently has at its disposal 16.5 ha at Katrineholm Logistics Centre. The company builds and leases out warehouse properties. Katrineholm Rail Point AB has a business concept of offering cost-efficient, environmentally friendly logistics solutions. Through its strategic location beside two railway trunk lines and good arterial road connections, along with collaboration with Sweden s largest ports, the company can offer cost-efficient, environmentally friendly transport solutions, comprehensive terminal services and door-to-door distribution Collaboration with Göteborg port Göteborg port and Katrineholm municipality have agreed to develop Katrineholm Logistics Centre so that in practice it is operated as a part of the port. To ensure that the increased goods traffic will be accommodated, Göteborg port will develop a new network of inland terminals that are fully integrated with the port s cargo handling system (rail ports). Katrineholm Rail Point AB can then offer not only warehousing and loading but also secure storage and customs services. 4

6 Expansion in four stages The expansion of the Katrineholm Logistics Centre will be carried out in four stages: Stage 1, the Southern terminal A newly constructed double rail track connects the terminal area with the Western trunk line. The double track will allow for marshalling, switching and shunting of trains with capacity for full-length trains. The electrification of the track will be completed in June A 400 x 50 meter loading area for combi-traffic is constructed with a connection to the track. When the Northern terminal has been completed, the Southern terminal can be employed for general cargo and wagonload rail traffic. The direct link with the arterial road network from the area will be completed in October Setra Group is the first company to establish itself in the area. The company will distribute its goods throughout Sweden from the central warehouse in Katrineholm. Stage 2, the Northern terminal In the area closest to the Western trunk line, a 650 x 40-metre combiterminal will be built. Full-length trains can thereby be efficiently handled at the terminal. The facility is being planned with a view to continued expansion, controlled by market demand. Both containers and trailers can be handled and intermediate storage solutions will be available. Katrineholm Logistikfastigheter AB is developing an area for warehousing and logistics management directly adjacent to the terminal. Stage 2 is estimated to be up and running during the summer of Stage 3 The enterprise has excellent conditions for expansion in line with growth in the volume of goods. The requirements for track capacity and flexibility at the KLC will then increase. For this reason a further link to the Western trunk line is being planned in the direction of Stockholm. Stage 4 Land has been allocated for further expansion if cargo and warehouse handling increase in the future. The area can be connected by rail. 6

Stage 2: In proximity to the trunk line a combi-terminal is built for goods handling between railway and lorry transport. The area between the terminal facility and the southern track is used for warehousing and logistics handling. Stage 3: At this stage another connection to the trunk line is constructed, in the direction of Stockholm. Stage 4: For a future development eastward of freight and warehouse handling facilities, there are also areas with possibilities for a direct railway link. 7

8 Views on Katrineholm Logistics Centre An excellent alternative An excellent alternative is being offered here that will enable us to transport our heavy and bulky products to customers within a large geographic area. We are also large-scale consumers of cement and armouring. Heavy goods can now be handled by railway, which is better for the environment. When this entails environmental, logistic and economic benefits, it is a concept that will come to grow even stronger also in the future. To further develop this concept, Göteborg Port has launched a railway initiative, Railport Scandinavia. The system is based on frequent unit trains between Göteborg Port and efficient inland terminals, known as railports. The terminal that will now be developed in Katrineholm is certainly in keeping with this ambition. The central location and the possibility of distributing to both southern and northern Sweden by environmentally friendly railway have been important factors behind our choice of Katrineholm. Economically and environmentally speaking it is more expedient to transport by railway than by arterial road.
