Security even when you are out of work Unionen members enjoy one of the market s best income protection insurance schemes, with extraordinary benefits included in the membership fee. This gives you extra peace of mind and would be very valuable if you were to lose your job. The income protection insurance means that combined with unemployment benefit, you can receive up to 80 per cent of your previous income up to SEK 60,000 per month for 150 days. Even more security the voluntary part of income protection insurance There is the opportunity to extend your income protection beyond what is already included in Unionen s income protection insurance. You can extend your protection with more compensation days as high as incomes of SEK 150,000 per month. Income protection insurance securely established in your membership Example: If you have a salary of SEK 24,000 per month and lose your job, you get SEK 11,215 per month in compensation from the unemployment benefit fund after tax. The income protection insurance supplements your unemployment benefit so that you get SEK 14,068 per month after tax. Example : If you have a salary of SEK 30,000 per month and lose your job, you get SEK 11,215 per month in compensation from the unemployment benefit fund after tax. The income protection insurance supplements your unemployment benefit so that you get SEK 17,285 per month after tax. Exempel: If you have a salary of SEK 38,000 per month and lose your job, you get SEK 11,215 per month in compensation from the unemployment benefit fund after tax. The income protection insurance supplements your unemployment benefit so that you get SEK 21,608 per month after tax. SEK +2,853 per month SEK +6,070 per month SEK +10,393 per month The examples have been calculated using the 2013 income tax table (Table 30, column 5) SEK per month SEK per month Voluntary income protection insurance Income protection insurance Unemployment benefit + Income protection insurance + Voluntary income protection insurance = up to 80 per cent of your salary after tax on incomes up to SEK 150,000 per month Unemployment benefit + Income protection insurance = up to 80 per cent of your salary after tax on incomes up to SEK 60,000 per month SEK per month Unemployment benefit Unemployment benefit = 80 per cent of your salary up to the income ceiling of SEK 18,700 per month. You can receive a maximum of SEK 11,168 after tax. 3
Learn more on unionen.se As a Unionen member, you automatically have income protection insurance if you are a gainfully employed member or self-employed and are a member of a Swedish unemployment benefit fund. If you become unemployed and are in the unemployment benefit fund, you can receive unemployment benefit, but never more than 80 per cent of what is known as the compensation ceiling of SEK 18,700 per month. This is SEK 14,960 before tax and about SEK 11,100 after tax. Every single krona, every hundred and thousand krona note that you earn over SEK 18,700 per month is money that you will lose if you are unemployed. So there is peace of mind in knowing that Unionen s income protection insurance is included in your membership fee and supplements your unemployment benefit and any severance pay so that you receive a total of up to 80 per cent of previous earnings up to SEK 60,000 per month. You can receive compensation from the income protection insurance for 150 compensation days, which is about 7 months, even during periods you may be receiving an activity grant. If you are from another trade union and become a member of Unionen, you can credit the period you were in that union s equivalent income protection insurance scheme. The voluntary part of income protection insurance for more days and higher income All those covered by the income protection insurance and have an income above the ceiling in the unemployment benefit fund can for a premium opt to sign up for an extra 50 compensation days in addition to the 150 days already included in the membership fee. This means you can get a total of up to 200 compensation days (the equivalent of about 9 months), something which many members have requested. The voluntary part of the income protection insurance also gives you the opportunity to further extend your income protection by insuring your income over SEK 60,000 per month as high as SEK 150,000 per month. If you opt for the voluntary part in this income range, the 50 extra days are included in the premium to give you a total of 200 compensation days. On unionen.se, you can read more about the premium and how to take out the voluntary part of the income protection insurance. Insured income Insured income is calculated at the beginning of the unemployment period through the same method as used by the unemployment benefit fund to calculate qualifying income. Apart from salary, the income base consists normally of occurring payments that are taxed as income from employment. It is important for you to have reported up-to-date salary information to us. Remember to inform us if, for example, you go on sick leave, parental leave, commence studies, are active in a labour market initiative or the like. 4
More about terms and conditions As a Unionen member, you automatically have income protection insurance if you are a gainfully employed member or self-employed are a member of a Swedish unemployment benefit fund In order to take out the voluntary part of the income protection insurance for more days and higher income, you must meet the requirements above and have a salary that exceeds what is known as the income ceiling in the unemployment benefit fund, currently SEK 18,700 per month. Conditions for compensation In order to receive compensation, the following conditions apply: That unemployment benefit is paid out by an approved unemployment benefit fund or that you are participating in a labour market policy initiative and are receiving an activity grant at the same level as unemployment benefit. (Please note that the decision that Unionen Medlemsförsäkring receives from the unemployment benefit fund is based on your total income and on your working hours during the last 12 months before you became unemployed.) That you have been covered, and are still covered, by the income protection insurance for a continuous period of at least 12 months before becoming unemployed. This qualification period begins no earlier than the date you became a member of Unionen and at the same time met the age and salary conditions. (See also the section Rules for transfer from another union.) That you have been gainfully employed for at least 12 of the last 18 months. During these 12 months, you must have been gainfully employed for at least 80 hours per month. The last period of work must also have had a duration of at least one month, and during that time you must have been gainfully employed for at least 80 hours. If you get a job before the 150 compensation days* are expended, you still retain the days that you have not yet used if you should become unemployed again within two years. If during the time you receive compensation, you start working and then once more fulfil the condition (see the point above), a new compensation period of a maximum of 150 days* commences. That means that you cannot utilise the days you have not used in your previous compensation period. 5
Full terms and conditions are available on unionen.se If you have received 150 compensation days*, to obtain a new compensation period it is necessary, when you become unemployed, for at least twelve months to have passed since the last compensation day. During that time you must have been continuously insured and have worked for at least 80 hours per month for twelve consecutive months. During this period, you may not have received unemployment benefit. *(200 compensation days if you have taken out the voluntary part). Payment of compensation If you meet the requirements for compensation, you apply for compensation on a special form. You order the form on unionen.se or by calling Unionen s income protection insurance number How much compensation does the income protection insurance provide? The income protection insurance, in the event of unemployment, pays out an insurance amount which, combined with unemployment benefit and any other compensation (such as severance pay, AGE, from the job security councils), is the equivalent of up to 80 per cent of previous income after tax. Qualifying income is calculated through the same method as used by the unemployment benefit fund. The compensation is paid for a maximum of 150 compensation days (200 if you have taken out the voluntary part) after the unemployment benefit fund s waiting period has passed. With the same rules as for the unemployment benefit fund, that is 22 compensation days per month, this is the equivalent of about seven months (nine months if you have taken out the voluntary part). The compensation cannot be postponed. Only the days for which you would have otherwise received a daily allowance are counted towards the waiting period. The right to compensation may, in the case of part-time work, be limited to 75 days. If you are unemployed part-time and receive wages and unemployment benefit for the same week, you can receive compensation for no more than 75 days for these weeks. After this, you can only receive compensation for weeks of full unemployment. Compensation from the income protection insurance is paid out fortnightly in the form of a supplementary daily allowance for those days a daily allowance is paid out from the unemployment benefit fund. If you should be excluded from receiving unemployment benefit, compensation will also not be paid out from the income protection insurance. 6
When does the policy cease to apply? The income protection insurance ceases to apply in the following cases: On the first day of the month in which you turn 65. If you no longer fulfil the terms and conditions of the income protection insurance (see page 5). You may at any time terminate the voluntary part of the income protection insurance by giving notice to Unionen Medlemsförsäkring AB. Rules for transfer from another union If you are from a union with an equivalent income protection insurance scheme, you may credit the period, insurance period and working period in that insurance towards qualification in Unionen s income protection insurance. You do not need to substantiate this when you become a member of Unionen. It only becomes relevant in the event of unemployment. You can find out which policies are counted as equivalent by contacting Unionen via the income protection insurance address medlemsforsakring@unionen.se or phone number Are you paying the correct fee to Unionen? You pay a membership fee to Unionen in relation to your income. Make sure you are paying the correct fee. We base our calculations on the salary that was last reported to Unionen. The fee is valid until the end of the year, regardless of general wage increases. However, if you have different working hours, become unemployed or are staying abroad, it is possible that your membership fee will change. If your fee is not correct please contact Unionen s membership number or via a web form on unionen.se/kontakt. 7
