1 Intermodal transport in Sweden and Europe Do you want to help to reduce CO 2 emissions and at the same time improve your transport economy? Development Routes in Sweden and Europe Benefits Environment and emissions Load carriers
2 Schenker the leader in intermodal transport At Schenker we have been working for a long time to combine different modes of transport to produce a cost-effective, environmentally intelligent solution for long-distance transport. Today we are the largest user in Sweden of intermodal transport by road and rail. Certain containerised sea freight is also transported using this system. Similarly, we also make use of longer ferry routes to reduce European road transport and in doing so generate further environmental gains. Intermodal transport currently accounts for almost eight per cent of Schenker's transport in Sweden. Increasing the use of intermodal transport is part of Schenker's seven-point programme to halve carbon dioxide emissions through to Over the years we have increased the use of intermodal transport. Through co-operation with established partners over a long period and through the focus and resources of our parent company, Deutsche Bahn, we now have a strong platform on which to build for the future. Schenker's global network includes the know-how, ideas and systems that will benefit you as a customer. It also includes creating transport solutions that strike an optimal balance providing good transport economy whilst reducing the emission of environmentally hazardous substances. Our strategy is to work with our intermodal operators and hauliers to gradually develop and broaden our service offering. This will enable us to be even better at satisfying our customers' wishes and demands. Intermodal transport in Sweden The map to the right shows the main routes where we offer intermodal transport. Through our involvement and large volumes we can be instrumental in deciding the times, routes and intermodal terminals that will be needed in the future. We work closely with our hauliers and we expect to be able to offer further routes in the future. 2

4 Cross-border intermodal transport For your European deliveries we have intermodal solutions for both Swedish and international routes. There are various combinations of road, rail and long-distance ferries available. For Norway and the Continent, for example, we use a fine-mesh network of intermodal trains together with our partners and other DB group companies. The map shows the most important routes at present although more are being developed. NORRBOTTEN The Continent, mainly Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Italy. Through hubs such as Trelleborg, Malmö,, Rostock, Lubeck and Travemunde. For Belgium, the Netherlands and France we also offer transport using long-distance coastal ferry services to reduce emissions by cutting the distance travelled by road. Frequency and lead times are generally the same as road transport. On certain routes the lead time could be one day longer. 5 We match the advantages of road and rail In our intermodal transport system we can make use of the flexibility of a truck and the environmental advantages of a train. Intermodal transport takes place using individual load carriers that can be easily switched between different modes. The truck is used for collection and distribution to and from the rail terminal, with rail used to transport the load carrier over the longer distance. Using intermodal transport offers many advantages. The load carrier is transported on an intermodal train, in the majority of cases at night. This means that the lead time is generally the same as for road transport. The transport network mainly comprises shuttle trains between two terminals, offering a system that is punctual and reliable. The trucks do not leave the train, there is a good level of safety and accurate information regarding the position is available throughout the whole transport chain, including terminals and transport connections. The use of a wide range of load carriers improves flexibility and the capacity to plan deliveries. The loadcarrier is placed with the customer, loaded on site and then taken to the rail terminal. Alternatively, we collect the consignment at our terminal, fill the load carrier and take it to the rail terminal. Promotes transport economy this is reflected best in the prices for long distances and for large loads that fill a load carrier. This is based on the fact that costs for energy, personnel, road taxes and maximum freight weights are often lower. If we take into account the environmental aspect then everyone gains by using intermodal transport. Apart from reduced emissions there is also less noise. The number of transport accidents and incidents is reduced and fewer people are injured. Advantages of intermodal transport Good transport economy particularly for large loads and long distances. Flexibility with regard to load carrier capacity. Reliable shuttle trains without the need for shunting means very good timekeeping. A good environmental choice when we match your service requirements. Service in Sweden Daily transport movements with overnight delivery in southern Sweden as far north as. Same times for collection and delivery on the majority of routes. On a small number of routes it could take a few hours longer. Service, international Several departures each week, on certain routes each day. Lead times are the same as for road transport although one day longer on certain routes. Reduced road taxes e.g. Maut in Germany. Higher load weight, up to 27 tonnes per trailer in certain areas. Load carriers Depending on the route and whether the transport is domestic or international, a wide range of load carriers is available: Standard trailer 13.6 m (on certain routes there are limits on megatrailers). Swap body, varying in length from 7.3 to >13 m. Container, varying in length from 7.3 to >13 m. For international movements trailers are used mostly although on some routes short swap bodies are used. Booking and tracking You book and follow the transport in the same way as for normal road transport. Our products Intermodal transport is most suitable for part-loads and full load carriers using the product: DB SCHENKERdirect We also offer temperature-controlled transport for the majority of load carriers and on the majority of domestic routes using the product: DB SCHENKERcoldsped On some routes also for groupage: DB SCHENKERsystem DB SCHENKERcoldsped For containerised sea freight we offer a domestic connection using the product: DB SCHENKERocean For rail-based transport with wagon loads and in combination with road we have: DB SCHENKERrailog Environmental performance On average, a reduction of more than 75% in carbon dioxide emissions in domestic operations. On longer international routes the reduction is up to 50%. Lower emissions of hydrocarbons, nitric oxide, sulphur oxide*, particulate matter and dust. (*slightly lower for Continental intermodal transport.) 5
6 Emission reductions Rail transport always uses less energy than road transport. This is due to lower friction and higher load weights. Electric power used in different countries can vary in quality although CO 2 emissions are reduced considerably. Below are a number of examples demonstrating the difference for a large consignment transported by road, by intermodal means and by ferry. Domestic transport The table shows a comparison for a consignment of 22 freight tonnes transported by road and by intermodal means. Here we calculate door-to-door with typical examples of connecting transport to and from the intermodal terminals. In the case of road transport, the consignment is only part of a truck and trailer, where the maximum load is 40 freight tonnes.
