2 31 st Annual Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology Review Course Description This course is designed to provide a comprehensive review of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology for residents, faculty and all practitioners of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery as well as other dental specialists. This course will discuss histopathology, differential diagnosis and management of pathological conditions and common syndromes. The overall goal of the course is to prepare participants to systematically evaluate and work up patients, to arrive at a realistic differential diagnosis, and to direct treatment modalities. The course includes CPC/Case Reviews sessions where individual representative cases are presented for a discussion of the appropriate workup, differential diagnosis, histopathology and treatment. This Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology course is offered as an educational review and does not imply approval or association with the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery or any dental specialty board. However, practitioners and residents preparing for their written and/or oral board examination have found this course to be extremely useful and many practitioners have realized improved diagnostic skills and treatment methods. Accreditation The Medical Educator Consortium, is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians. Credit Hours The Medical Educator Consortium, designates this educational activity for a maximum of 50.0 credit hours in category 1 towards the AMA Physician s Recognition award. 2

8 Text Available by Course Directors Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology. A Rationale for Diagnosis and Treatment By Robert E. Marx, DDS & Diane Stern, DDS Dr. Marx and Dr. Stern co-authored a textbook entitled Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology: A Rationale for Diagnosis and Treatment, Published by Quintessence. This comprehensive and definitive text focuses on the recognition and treatment of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathologies. This Book received the American Medical Writers Association Book of the Year Award in Although the Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology review course will not be a reiteration of this book, the concepts and treatments presented in it will be open for questions and discussion. For more information visit Quintessence Publishing Co, Inc. at or contact at Oral & Intravenous Bisphosphonate-Induced Osteonecrosis of the Jaws: History, Etiology, Prevention, and Treatment By Robert E. Marx, DDS Since it was first identified in 2003, bisphosphonate-induced osteonecrosis has come under growing scrutiny by medical and dental specialists alike because it affects cancer patients receiving intravenous bisphosphonate therapy and osteoporosis patients receiving oral bisphosphonate therapy and yet its presentation of exposed bone is limited to the jaws. Based on a clear understanding of the disease mechanism and documented outcomes of the relatively small number of cases treated to date, this timely book presents definitive treatment protocols for patients who present at each stage in its progression. Equally important, it offers a simple method for predicting risk as well as crucial recommendations for steps that can be taken to prevent the disease from developing when bisphosphonate therapy is indicated. Finally, a series of comprehensive case histories related to both oral and intravenous bisphosphonates provide direct guidance in managing patients spanning the full presentation spectrum.
9 Case-Base Testing in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery A CD Based Study Tool VOLUME I Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology and Its Treatment Robert E. Marx, DDS, and Diane Stern, DDS VOLUME II Oral and Maxillofacial Reconstructive Surgery Robert E. Marx, DDS Case-based learning is an effective and stimulating method to increase your knowledge base and prepare for examinations. Volume I "Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology and Its Treatment," fea-tures 100 questions and explained answers derived from actual cases that will test and improve your knowledge in oral and maxillofacial pathology and its treatment. Volume II Reconstructive Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery feature 100 questions and explained answers from actual cases that will test and improve knowledge in oral and maxillofacial surgery reconstructive principles and procedures. The questions in these series cover topics that span the entire spectrum of oral and maxillofacial pathology and oral and maxillofacial reconstructive procedures, including oral cancer, odontogenic cysts and tumors, fibro-osseous diseases, salivary gland pathologies, bone grafting graft materials, soft tissue procedures, and much more. Items in each test are formatted as a brief description, often accompanied by a clinical photograph, radiograph, computed tomography scan, and/or laboratory value, followed by a succinct question. In most cases, the question is followed by four multiple -choice answers, of which only one is correct. A unique feature of the program is that it not only gives the correct answer, but each answer concludes with a comprehensive discussion of why it is correct and why the other options can be ruled out. Both the answers and these explanations are located in a separate file so that the test can be used both as an actual examination and as an edu-cational tool. Also included are several "matching" questions that challenge the reader to coordinate and compare clinical, radiographic, and histopathologic findings. This test is designed for practitioners and students who wish to increase their knowledge, improve their clinical practice, and/or prepare for board examinations.
